Available for auction is this 1976 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Coupe finished in Minerva Blue over a black interior. Introduced for the European market in 1975, the Carrera 3.0 replaced the 2.7-liter Carrera and featured a larger fuel-injected flat-six engine derived from the new Turbo model. This example was first purchased by the seller over 25 years ago and features a 964-sourced 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, updated 911 Turbo front seats, 16” Fuchs wheels, and a three-spoke RUF steering wheel. The seller reports that the original 3.0-liter engine will accompany the car and that regular service has been performed by the experts at Perfect Power of Buffalo Grove, Illinois for over two decades.

The Carrera 3.0 is distinguishable from a standard 2.7-liter 911 by its black trim fittings and wider flares for the rear fenders. This example comes finished in Minerva Blue Metallic and features European market bumperettes and lighting, staggered width 16” Fuchs wheels, and “Carrera 3.0” badging. The seller reports the car was refinished in its original shade under previous ownership, and that an opening was cut in the front valance for improved airflow to the oil cooler.

The cabin is upholstered in black leather and vinyl, equipped with a pair of front seats sourced from a later 911 Turbo model. Black carpets line the floors and are said to remain in fair condition. The seller reports that the original seats will accompany the car and will need to be reupholstered. Features include power windows, a sunroof, a suite of VDO instrumentation, a leather-wrapped three-spoke RUF steering wheel, and an upgraded radio head unit. The seller confirms that all gauges, electronics, and accessories remain functional.

Power comes from an air-cooled M64 3.6-liter flat-six engine which was installed under current ownership. The original 3.0-liter engine has been disassembled and will accompany the car as well. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed 915 manual transmission. The car has been fitted with a newer Carrera oil cooler and the seller states all service items have been attended to.

This sale will include a clean title as well as the original seats and disassembled 3.0-liter motor.

The seller would like you to know: "I first bought this Carrera 3.0 shortly after I shaved the rain gutters off my other Carrera 3.0. I feared that I might regret it someday! My wife was not as concerned and made me sell a car. I sold it to one of my best friends, who drove it for over 20 years. Eventually, it ended up back in my hands. I installed a 964 3.6-liter engine in it after he did a complete repaint in the original Minerva Blue Metallic color. It's a great car, fast, reliable, and beautiful."

  • Perfpow (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@Slim_Chance Ha! And that’s where the dilemma is! You will lose 80 hp in that move just to have your matching numbers engine sitting in the car instead of in the garage!!

@nobrakes I know that it is a bit of a dilemma for some people. Too bad since the 3.6 engine allows you to have all the performance and fun along with reliability, better economy, and cleaner emissions. Strong low end and great top end power. You never have to worry about the matching engine, getting ventilated by a connecting rod. Best of both worlds. Putting this car back to stock is easy. Put the matching numbers engine back in. Put the 15 inch wheels on it. And put the original seats back in. In the meantime, it’s a great little hot rod.

  • nobrakes (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

The 3.0 engine from this two year Euro Carrera is NOT the 3.0 from the SC. It is a GREAT engine. Based on the 930 Turbo it is essentially that engine with a hotter cam and normal aspiration. Having owned one for a year or so I describe it as having the low end grunt of a 3.0 SC motor with the rev happy character of the 2.7 and earlier small displacement motors. To put it in perspective, with its 200+ horsepower offered in 1976, it took until 1984 with the introduction of the 3.2 to eclipse it. Alas it did not meet emissions and never saw these shores. Nice car, but a bit ambivalent over the swap, I guess it will just follow the car around in boxes for the foreseeable future, because the fun factor of the 3.6 is a trump card to leave it as is, or.... Fresh Minerva Blue paint. Sorted 3.6 and a matching numbers 3.0 to come with it? What’s not to like? I wish I could add to my stable! This one has a long way to go.

@Perfpow Thanks for the upfront answer! I have a couple of friends who are potential buyers that wanted these questions answered. GLWTA!

  • Perfpow (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@richardrobert I do not have the original 15’s, but I have a pair of new 15 x 8s and the 7s are easier to find but I haven’t been looking as hard as I did for the e
8s. My plan right now is to sell the car with the 16s and if the owner prefers 15s then I will keep the 16s and get a pair of sevens for the front, I would be willing to do that, but the new owner would have to pick tires and pay for them.
As for the headlight washers, that’s a good question. I can’t remember if those were closed up when it was repainted or if they were gone before then. I just don’t remember .

  • richardrobert 1 year, 1 monthago

This car should have come with 15" Fuchs. Does seller have them? Also, didn't 3.0s have giant squirters coming out of the bumpers? (headlight washers). Not being picky here, just seeing if the owner/seller knows any history on this items, thanks! Can't beat this blue....

@twickes40 The 3.6 engine was rebuilt at 83,841. So about 15,000 miles ago. I got the engine out of a race car, and the mileage and history was unknown. We ran it for a few years before we rebuilt it. The rebuild was done in 2008.

Can you provide photos of the upper bolsters on the Sport Seats?
    Thank you.

  • Perfpow (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@MTtoAZ The wheels are genuine Fuchs.
    16 x 9 and 16 x 7

  • Perfpow (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@MTtoAZ all of the Carrera 3.0s were gray market cars. They came in with speedometers that were in KPH. They were changed, usually to miles per hour. There are a lot of miles where records were kept on the new speedometer. Mileage before that is unknown.

  • MTtoAZ (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

I'm guessing 7's on the front, but are these 8's or 9's on the back?
The mileage shows Kilometers in the listing, but miles on the speedo, clarification?
    Thanks in advance!

I’ve seen this car in person many times. The pics don’t even come close to how stunning it is in person. I bought a 964 a year or so ago. This is the car I wish I’d bought. Sol is a master. Nothing leaves his shop until it’s perfect. Hence the name.

I just loaded the pictures of the second engine. This is the matching numbers Carrera 3.0 engine that is included in the sale of the car. The CIS fuel injection system, pistons/cylinders, cylinder heads, complete, the wiring harness, and all of the engine internals are included. The engine was disassembled for a normal rebuild, not for any repairs. Partway in we realized it would benefit from an aline boring. We decided to use the 3.6 L engine instead.
