Up for auction is this V8-powered 1976 Porsche 911 S finished in Crystal Red Tintcoat over a black interior.  Treated to a V8 engine conversion by Renegade Hybrids in 2013, this 1976 example was outfitted with a brand-new custom-built small block V8 engine in 2018.  Showcasing an extensive list of upgrades and modifications as well as custom styling inspired by the 964, this unique 911 S is now being offered for auction in excellent running order.

In 2013, this 911 underwent a professional bare metal respray in Crystal Red at a cost of over $11k.  The exterior finish is stated to be in excellent condition (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  Built as a show car inspired by the 964, this 911 has been outfitted with a revised front bumper and rear spoiler as well as updated side skirts and mirrors.  This 911 rides on a set of rare 18” 3-piece BBS wheels which are currently dressed in Falken tires.  The seller indicates that an additional set of 18” wheels with brand new tires will be included in the sale.

Inside, the black interior has been refinished with custom details and accessories. New carpeting and headliner were installed along with Dynamat sound insulation and Sabelt GT 090 Sport cloth bucket seats with 4-point Sparco harnesses.  The rear seats and console have been removed and a digital FI TECH fuel injection display has been mounted over the radio delete plate. Other noteworthy details include RS style door pulls, Rennline window handles and a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel.  All gauges and electrical components are reported to be fully functional although the clock is stated to work intermittently.

In 2013, this 911 was sent to the industry leaders at Renegade Hybrids in Las Vegas to be outfitted with a V8 engine conversion.  Upon the current owner’s purchase in 2018, this engine was removed in favor of a brand-new custom built 383ci small block Chevrolet V8 engine dyno tested at 376 HP and 461 lb-ft of torque.  This new configuration features an upgraded cam, heads, headers, and exhaust system as well as a deep sump oil pan and dual radiator setup with electric fans.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a rebuilt factory 915 5-speed manual transmission with a short shift kit.  Bilstein suspension provides a responsive ride while 996 brakes on all four corners help to manage the added power. Having added just over 1k miles on its newly installed motor, this 911 underwent a recent oil service and is said to remain in excellent driving condition.

The sale of this incredible 1976 911 will include original books and tools, a set of two keys and an extensive collection of service records and build invoices.  If you are in search of a vintage Porsche unlike any other, this custom-built V8 powered 911 makes the obvious choice.

@Yuro Thanks. I would like to have a Renegade Cayman but you lose a couple of inches of leg room I can't give up with the conversion :(

  • Yuro (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@993David Good luck with your sale. I watched the video and this looks like a very solid car. I got to see one of Renegade's V-8 Caymans at the SEMA show in Vegas a few years ago. Yours looks BETTER.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Yuro Yes, seats are very individual. I daily drove a Panamera GTS for 3 years and really didn't care for the 18 way seats. They were ok for 2 hours but don't try and drive 6 hours. I bailed out into a 750 after about 50000 miles. My 993s and Speedster seats were good for all day comfort. The Sabelts are on sliders so you can adjust back and forth but are otherwise fixed. Your GT2 CF Buckets are pretty much the holy grail of automotive performance seating. I wonder where pipe cleaners are are ranked in the pantheon of seat construction? Hilarious.

  • Yuro (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@993David @993David: To answer you a little more directly, I had GT2 CF buckets in a previous Cayman. They are the perfect street car/track day seat. They have holes where you need them for harnesses and the bolsters and width are reasonable for mortals to make a grocery run.

Prior to the GT2 seats, I had a Recaro Profi XL...a little wider than your seats, with maybe slightly less side bolstering...but the bolsters were longer...more of your legs were confined. I found that a little bit too confining for long trips....I only used the driver's seat for one track day and never really bonded with it. Still have the thing in my garage.

I thought they were a PITA to use for anything but longer trips....or track days because ingress-egress was awkward...doable, but not great.. Really gets old climbing over those bolsters. The bolsters on your seats are even bigger but they aren't as long, so yours may be better than the Recaros for getting in and out.

I went from those to some knock-off GT2 seats that looked terrific, were comfy and had great ingress/egress too...and reclined...but they were made out of pipe cleaners and didn't feel the least bit safe even on the street...They would self-recline as you drove and you had to re-adjust every 10 minutes. The passenger's seat made noises if no one was sitting in it. ...and I had to deal with a warning light on the dash...and they took 3 weeks of sawing and fitting to get in the car....Long, ugly story there I won't repeat. They should never have been put on the market. I ended up selling them to a guy making a kit-car / dune buggy thing....Probably perfect for what he wanted.

The real Porsche GT2 seats were purchased used...and were really, really great. These are different from 997 GT3 seats, which are a little narrow (fit me great, but too tight for long hauls, I think). From feedback on the newer CF buckets for GT4 etc, I think the older GT2 seats are better. Wish I still had mine.

@993David : I'm 69 years old. 5' 11 and 180 lbs...so not really a huge guy, but not really young anymore either. I like manual seats better than electric because you can easily slide the seat all the way back to get out, then slide it forward to your chosen spot when you get back in. It's much quicker than power seats. With some practice, I can put the seat where I want it, within a click one way or the other, on the first try. ...Then there's that extra inch or so of travel you get with manuals. Add to that, they're lighter....and cheaper.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Yuro I just noticed your comment on the seats. I am 6'3" 225# and turn 49 later this month. Getting in and out is of course more difficult than sliding in and out of a regular seat but once you are in they are actually very comfortable. I will however preface that by saying I do have cat-like athletic reflexes. After a couple of hours I wish the seat cushion were more heavily padded but other than that I really like them. They seem roomier than the buckets I have experienced in a GT3 and GT4 which seem more suited to less beefy 175# driver.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@sculptedmetal Yes, driving a 930 is always an adventure. The renegade is certainly an adventure but more in control and predictable.

  • sculptedmetal (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

David- thanks for your answers. Will factor in the costs of air conditioning - necessary for me to really enjoy it. Loved your comment: "The car is not trying to kill you..", which is admittedly part of the 930's allure.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@burnrubr The first thing I do with this car at Cars and Coffee is open the engine cover. It is always a hit with everyone.

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Great toy to have has power and the abundance of parts locally no Porsche tax!!! Good luck to the winning bidder! Go to a purist Porsche car show but don't open the trunk, lol

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

    @Johnwestt Yes, me too.

  • Johnwestt (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Thanks for the reply. I’m watching the bidding process. I’m interested in where it goes. Wes

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Johnwestt Yes, it seems very dialed in and plenty fast. There are no flat spots in the throttle response. It has always had the FI Tech so I can’t compare it to a carbureted version of its self. The only time I stomped on it in the videos were the 5th gear pulls on the expressway when we were already at speed. Everything else was smooth on and smooth off the throttle. I think all/nearly all of the driving videos were in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. Unless someone has swapped a 997 metzger turbo motor or ls3 performance crate motor or an ls7, this is likely one of or even the fastest and most powerful 70s/80s 911 on the road today. Trust me, if you want to scare yourself in this car, you can. Please let me know if you need anything else.

  • Johnwestt (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@993David Well the question is On the FiTech on the existing 383 motor in the car. Is it dialed in? When I changed from a 750 Holley to the FiTech on my Cobra with a 460 with Cobra Jet Aluminum Heads it became so responsive The acceleration is frightening. Like 3x what it was and immediate. But the video didn’t really show that and my Cobra weighs 2755-lbs. Are you happy with the FiTech performance?

@SCG Also, heat and defrost both work fine.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Johnwestt Yes, when I bought the car in 2018 it was very dialed in and ran strong and smooth. My engine builder tinkered with it some with the new motor. I cant really tell a difference. I had a 460 in my Cobra but it had a carburetor. The power delivery in this is actually pretty similar to my cobra with 460ci and 4 speed top loader. Pulls hard right from the bottom.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@burnrubr Please see my answer to SGC. Please let me know if you need anything more specific.
    Thanks,
    David

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@SCG The engine cooling is very good. There are a ton of lines going from the engine in the rear to the radiators with the radiator tank in the front. There are also 2 cooling fans switches at 165*. I did a 140 mile trip in June 2019 and it never got hot. I have done several 100 mile drives breaking in the new motor and it has also never gotten hot. In stop and go traffic I have seen it as high as ~180*. On the highway at 80mph it sits under 165 without running the fans. The oil temperature is usually in the low/mid 200s and is measured on the original oil temperature gauge with oil pressure. The water temperature is measured on the FI Tech display. There was not AC optioned on this car. Im not sure when it became standard on a 911. Im sure it could be added via Vintage Air or something like they do on restomods, you would just need somewhere it put the compressor. I have had 2 1989 911s, one of which was a Speedster (sold here earlier this year or late last year) and 2 993 cars. One 993 was a 95 C2 and the other was a 98 C2S. They drive very similarly being on the same wheelbase, I think. Both of the front ends on the 89s feel lighter and bounce a little more than the 993 which feels a little more planted. The renegade feels very similar to the speedster which has 911 turbo suspension. The Bilstien setup is very nice with very little body lean. It has never tried to do anything unexpected and I have pushed it pretty hard through the corners. There is a ton of rubber versus any 911 series from the 70s and any 993 this side of an S, 4S or Turbo. The car is not trying to kill you like a 70s or 80s 930 turbo that was nothing then all power band. This pulls like a 993 Turbo and is always in control. Please let me know if you need anything else.
    Thnaks,
    David

@SCG waiting for answer from SCG's inquiry regarding heating, cooling, driving dynamics, etc.. thanks

  • SCG (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Renegade, apostate, heretic - there are many words to describe someone who puts a V8 in the back of the one, true Porsche! That is why your car is so different and unique! Seriously though, how does the engine cool in very hot weather? Does the AC work? How about cornering and dynamics vs. the traditional 993?

@BarrettRC8 I am selling to make room for my c8 which has been pulled for production. I also have a jag e-type it’s, Maserati granturismo, v8 Sc Range Rover and mb gls. I don’t know what you ended up buying but this car is extremely nice but nicer when I bought it. It just needed some tlc. I did a paint correction, detail and some fine tuning to make it excellent. And the new motor. But it was very solid when I bought it. I’m glad you left it for me, it has been a lot of fun!

  • BarrettRC8 3 years, 11 monthsago

    David,

Would you mind saying why you are selling it? I considered buying this car in 2018 and ultimately held off, but it is much cleaner than what I had understood and the car that I ultimately ended up buying about three months later. You have me wondering if I had made a poor decision.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

    @RumbleAuto @stevetheodore
It is an iron block 383. I’ve never had it on a scale but my mechanic thinks it is ~2500#. It’s very light and nimble.

  • RumbleAuto (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

I really like what you've done here...truly a cool hot rod. Can you tell me if this is an aluminum or iron block V8 and what the total vehicle weight is in the current configuration? Thanks, and GLWTA.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Yuro Yuro, the other wheels are 18” fontmetal 5 spoke wearing 215 up front and 255 in the rear. I have sent a photo to Of the wheels and tires to Pcar to add to the gallery. I understand your view on the tire width to wheel and was planning to put wider tires on the bbs when they were ready for a change. The tires are firestone fire hawk indys that I had installed in June 2019. They have about 1200 miles on them. Let me know if I can answer anything else.
    Thanks,
    David

  • Yuro (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@993David Well...I'm not with the crowd on the appearance of these wheels. They look a bit wrong somehow...Too much rim and not enough spoke. Also, rims too big for the tires. Can you tell me more about the other set of wheels/tires for it?

Do you know the weight of this car currently?

Not totally sold on the seats either, but these are small things. This is a cool machine.

    Thanks!

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

    @Petroli @Adam
As far as I know it has the stock gearing which is relatively short. With 460#tq it pulls really hard in any gear at any rpm. The 265s on the rear wheels really make it hook up. It is a lot of fun.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@MiataIsAlwysTheAnswr Thank you, it is very striking. The 3 piece BBS really pull everything together in my opinion.

  • 993David (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Hello Pcar Market. Thank you for checking out my Renegade. It Is beautiful, mechanically bulletproof, makes gobs of usable power everywhere and is very thrilling to drive. I will try and be as responsive as possible to all questions and feel free to contact me. Happy bidding!!
    Thanks,
    David

  • Petroli (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

im a wicked fan too - watched the video and its so smooth - and when you see it pull away from the cars on the highway at speed - it just takes off - impressed.

  • MiataIsAlwysTheAnswr (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

This color with those BBS RS and that V8 chop chop...what a combo
