Produced between 1976 and 1977, the Porsche Carrera 3.0 represented the ultimate 911 in Porsche's model range behind the newly introduced 930 Turbo. The car was never officially sold in the United States and a total of 2,564 Coupe versions were produced in total. This 1977 example features genuine Turbo fenders and factory sport seats and has been fitted with a 3.0-liter flat-six engine borrowed from a 911SC paired to its 5-speed 915 manual gearbox. Presented in Gemini Blue over a blue interior, this Carrera is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
This example is believed to have been refinished in Gemini Blue under previous ownership and has been modified with original Porsche 911 Turbo fender flares. The car's original color was Copper Brown Metallic (443). Exterior details include fog lights, impact bumpers, side markers, a whale tail spoiler, "Carrera 3.0” badging, and black-finished 16” Fuchs wheels with modified rear width and older Bridgestone Potenza tires. A complete exterior refinish is recommended, as paint imperfections and bubbling are noted. The seller indicates some rust is present on the suspension pan and at the top of the passenger's door pillar. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is appointed with blue leather upholstery including matching Sport Seats, complemented with a black headliner and Porsche-branded floor mats. White-faced gauges have been installed along with a MOMO leather-wrapped steering wheel. The seller recommends replacing the door pull handles and pockets. The upgraded A/C system is fully functional and was serviced in preparation for sale. The odometer is inoperable and the car's true mileage is unknown.
The air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine was borrowed from a 1981 Porsche 911SC, generating as much as 180 HP and 175 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox. An upgraded stainless-steel SSI muffler has been installed and the engine is said to have been rebuilt approximately 12 years ago. More recent service items include an engine reseal and the rebuilding of the transmission, CV axles, and front calipers. A corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery.

@eurocol @z6erocoooool I just posted pictures and a video of the inner back and side pillars surrounding the engine. I also posted pictures of the rear bumper shock and a few of the inner fenders. doesn't look like corrosion due to way its formed, just a garage paint job where paint has run badly or clear coat done too thick, a paint thickness reading would tell you. I bet a good sanding and blend it could be back to a 5 footer condition, looking good.

@eurocol The car is titled in Florida. Can you please educate me and let me know how I can see if there is rust under the bubbling? I have looked and taken pictures from the underside and there is no evidence of rust. I think that if it was an accident the paint would have cracked, not bubbled. We don't deal with any paint or bodywork at our shop, so I'm really not an expert in that department. I have no way of knowing how the bubbling occurred. I'm not trying to hold back information or not be forthcoming, as you are claiming. I can't say that the car has rust under the bubbling of the paint or that it's been in an accident if I just don't see that. Obviously, if you don't trust the listing and can't have someone inspect the car for you, this is not the auction for you.
I'll try to get the car on a lift later today when the shop closes and get pics of the engine further away than #115. I will also try to get pics of both or the rear side engine pillars from above. Let me know if you want to see anything else. Thanks!

Having bought through Pcarmarket and other sites, the experience is only as good as the seller is forthcoming.
As a dealer, with years of experience in these matters, you know more about the car than the listing is telling me.
So can you, pretty please, explain the very lumpy condition of the rear driver's side fender picture # 49.
Rust or accident?
Whoever ends up with the car will want to know this, so as to avoid any surprises when the car shows up.
A picture of the engine taken just a little further away so as to show the engine shut panel and areas directly around the engine would help, as you have zoomed in so close we cannot see the fender to shut panel.

@eurocol Thank you. As for the rust, I have addressed those questions in several previous postings. To avoid redundancy, please reference those postings. I have submitted over 100 pictures, 2 videos, and have responded with details to every question. I'm sorry that you feel that we did not take great care in presenting this car. Please let me know what else we can do to satisfy you. There are detailed pictures of the rear fenders already up on the listing (38,47,49, etc) and I also provided a walk around video detailing them as well. I'm not sure how much more I'll be able to capture with a camera. Once again, PPIs are welcome and I'm willing to do a FaceTime video with anyone who is interested.
As for service records for the work that we did on our shop, this will be provided to the new owner. We currently don't have an invoice as the work was done for ourselves. The idea is to put the new service invoices in the name of the new owner. I have listed and provided pics for most of the work performed and parts changed. I forgot to mention a new S oil hose, pic 143.
Interesting car, and I love the color and the look of the car,
but there are a lot of unanswered questions:
You state that apart from the front horseshoe and the A pillar.
As a European car this car seems to have much more rust than stated.
Although evident in most pictures, the rust in pictures #38 and #49 is most concerning, an almost lunar scape,
if this is not rust, then what is it? Poorly repaired accident damage?
Either way more detailed pictures of the. 2 rear fenders are needed especially driver's side.
The rattle can spray of the gas tank and the messy wiring do not inspire me with confidence,
it's a shame that there is no Carfax to show the car's history.
Accident damage or theft recovery, since the most important and valuable part of the car is now missing, the engine.
At the right price it may still be a good project for a do it yourself guy.
I just surprises me that a Dealer would not take greater care in presenting this car.
Lastly can you post pictures of the repair invoices for the engine and gearbox.

The missing Carrera 3.0 engine is unique. It's also a very rare bird.
It’s a 930 3.0 Turbo engine/ 2.7RS crank and lighter 6 bolt flywheel. The cams are different. The redline is higher. The CIS setup is different, in this case, having considerably larger intake runners, ports and, larger intake valves. The fuel distributor is also different.
The '80-up SC engines were choked down compared to the '78-'79 which shared same intake, porting and intake valves. Porsche got the horsepower back for these by raising the compression.
Just wanted to confirm that this car has previously been upgraded with a Pop-off Valve and an MSD ignition.

Pictures have been posted of the engine out reseal and transmission rebuild process.
@sportscarguy3 The suspension pan can be seen in pic 110, 111 and 112. We charge about $2,500 for parts and labor but can work something out with the winner. With the transmission being freshly rebuilt and the oil leaks addressed, you could technically drive that car as-is. If you want us to do brakes (Pads, Rotors, Calipers, etc.) You are looking at about $1,800.
We can cover new belts and air filter. Oil change has already been completed with a new oil filter. Transmission has new fluids. I can't see you spending much on maintenance with the mileage you are considering using it.

Seller, I did go back and look through the pictures and see that there is a radio and speakers. My apologies for not looking closer at first.
Does this radio and speakers work efficiently now?
PS. Just to confirm, and be clear, the rear spoiler, I believe, is a tea tray, spoiler, larger at the sides than the whale tail spoiler.
The written information about the car suggests it comes with a whale tail spoiler, but it is a tea tray spoiler, as pictured correct ?
Oh, also forgot to ask about a radio and speakers does it currently have a working sound system?
And if no radio or speakers are present, are there wires there for installation?
Although the sound of an air cooled 3.0, with a nice exhaust, is wonderful music I dig having decent sounds/music when I’m driving occasionally

Regarding the suspension pan, can you give me a little more information on where it is what specifically it is and how much and how one replaces a suspension pan. ( forgive my lack of knowledge )
My driving habits are less than 1500 miles a year
I was wondering what the car might need , with this kind of driving , for the next 7 to 10,000 miles
So I believe you’re saying that You would recommend some basics, two tires, brakes, spark, plugs, etc. in 5 to 7000 miles of moderate driving, for me less than 1500 miles a year
I think you can understand what I’m trying to do is evaluate how much money I’m going to have to add to the car relatively soon after purchase besides California state taxes at close to 10% license and registration fees, to be able to use And enjoy the car until I can afford to cosmetically upgrade it
Any chance you might be able to replace those parts that you mentioned, and what that amount might be even a ballpark number? ( since you are familiar with the porsche., it might be easier for you to deal with some of these things while in your possession, is what I was thinking )

Here is a list of some other parts that were replaced by our shop during the preparation for sale. This is in addition to the transmission rebuild, CV axles, and front caliper.
-All rubber fuel lines on the engine
-Oil pressure switch
-Thermostat O-ring
-Valve cover gaskets
-All linkage bushings
-Engine Intake Boot
-All 8 Air Intake Sleeves
@Jnc852 Just the body. Fenders, spoilers, rockers, valances, etc. Brakes and suspension were not modified.
My suspicion is t is the same as yours.. I believe that that they did not do a great prep job and there are areas of disbonding.

The exterior is definitely the biggest concern on this vehicle. Fortunately there are no indications of the bubbling being a rust issue. The only two areas where rust is present are on the suspension pan and on the top of the passenger's door pillar. The car was painted over 25 years ago. My suspicion is that they did not do a great prep job and there are areas of disbonding. The previous owner claims that the body had no rust when the paint job was originally completed.
As for current "needs", I think the suspension pan replacement is a must at some point soon. I would also address the rust spot on the top of the passenger's door pillar. If you plan to drive the car twice a month and about 7-10 k miles a years, I would recommend rear tires (front's are new), brakes, belts, and perhaps spark plugs. If the auction winner wants, we could have any service done at a reduced cost prior to delivery.
I would drive this car to Massachusetts from Florida, just not sure how comfortable I'll be after a few hours. At least this one has nice sport seats and a really good AC. ;) I really don't see why this car would not be able to drive 1,500 miles and beyond.

Was anything else done to achieve the wide body look? Suspension/brakes/etc? Or were flares welded on and that's all? I too am curious if the bubbling is rust coming thru or just disbonding. I have a feeling it's the latter. It'll be a headturning car regardless.

The exterior paint concerns me, because in some areas it looks like substantial surface rust underneath the paint
Do you know anymore about the body condition under the paint, perhaps when it was painted from the original color to the new Gemini blue, who did the paint etc. etc.
Also, what else does the car currently need?
Or what might it need in moderate driving for 7 to 10,000 miles
Moderate driving for me would be once or twice a month for 150 miles round-trip plus or minus
E.g. brakes, tires, belts, etc.
If it was your car, would you feel comfortable driving up from Massachusetts to Florida? For example

@Bruce914 Thank you! It has a ton of potential. The clutch was adjusted when the transmission was rebuilt a few weeks ago. I’ve posted some pics of the transmission rebuild work and the engine out reseal. Hopefully they will be up by Monday.
@blakelertzman I guess I’m a bit desensitized. I’ve driven quite a few 911/912 with rusted suspension pans. It’s such a common issue on these and they certainly don’t rust overnight.
With that said, I legally would not recommend anyone to drive a car with a suspension pan that has rust holes.

@Jet2jeff2 Nice! This is definitely not an original example, but plenty of fun still left in this one. I’ve driven this car a few times now and it’s a riot. It really does pull very nicely and the transmission was just rebuilt, so shifting is smooth at every gear.
@witz Are you body shaming me? J/K Yes, this is a 1977 911 but not and S. According to the vin, it’s a Carrera 3.0. Yes, it’s not the original engine. As the listing states, it’s an ‘81 SC 3.0 engine that is running very well. It does indeed have steel wide body fenders, and some rust is present on the suspension pan and the top of the passenger’s door pillar.
@P-Unit Yes, the front suspension pan needs to be replaced. I don’t think the gas tank needs to be changed as it’s working as it should with no issues. The fuel is fresh and the tank shows no signs of corrosion inside. If the new owner decides to replace it, I’ll give them a great deal on one. ;) The floor pans are original to the car. I’ll confirm Monday with some pics of the top and bottom of the floor pans.
As for the interior, I was thinking the same exact thing. Yes, I do think that it was done well. The only way I came to that conclusion was when I found out the factory color. The interior is in nice shape. Dash is free of cracks. Sport seats feel good and have nice patina, no rips or major blemishes. Same for the rear backs and bottoms. Headliner just has one small tear. All seatbelts are present. Etc.
No electric gremlins. I’ll post a video going through the electronics.

@prmnorton1 - Thank you for the questions. The gas tank has some scrapes on the factory protective coating. It’s pretty common since these cars are so low. Once the protective coating is gone it gets some surface corrosion. I can take some closer pics. Fuel is clean. I’ve driven the car and have refueled a couple of times. No issues. This is a car that was driven regularly. Not a barn find, or a car that sat for a long period of time.
The front lower suspension pan has rust.(Pics 112-113) That would be one of the first things I would do to this car. No rust is present on the top side. (Pics 86-87-88) It’s definitely not affecting the integrity of the frame. A replacement suspension pan will have it rust free underneath.
@Orange911 - I don’t. I think the only way to verify now is with an in-person inspection at a dealer.

- if the car was originally copper brown metallic, there's no way it came with a blue leather interior, so carpets, seats, roof liner, for cards, and full dash have been swapped out. Was it done right? Are there any electrical gremlins that haven't been sorted?

Hi seller in pic 111 appears to be some rust and or corrosion on bottom off gas tank, can you see how bad it is and if it’s on inner part of gas pan? Is fuel clean?
