1977 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa (ROW)

Up for auction is this 1977 Porsche 911 R.OW. Carrera 3.0 Targa finished in the rare and stunning combination of Minerva Blue Metallic over a black leather interior (originally leatherette). This numbers-matching example features a complete engine rebuild along with a refreshed interior, making it a stand out among other examples. Originally sold new in Bavaria, this Targa is now being offered out of Scottsdale, AZ with proper documentation and extensive service records.

This Targa is said to have been professionally refinished approximately 7 years ago in its original rare color of Minerva Blue Metallic. The seller notes that the car shows to be in excellent cosmetic condition with a small area of corrosion present in the front trunk area. Detailed images are available in the photo gallery. A few key exterior features of this Targa include an iconic black Targa bar, factory fog lights, passengers-side mirror delete, tinted rear window and a rear window wiper. The car rides on a set of factory black-finished 16″ Fuchs wheels that are wrapped in BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2 tires.

Inside, you will find a black leather interior that shows to be in excellent condition which is clear when viewing the gallery photos. The front seats are said to have been professionally refinished in 2017. Noteworthy interior details include a rear window defroster, electric antenna, power windows, and an aftermarket Alpine head unit. All electronics are said to be in working order.

Power comes from a numbers-matching 930/02 3.0 L air-cooled- flat-six engine that is rated at approximately 200 HP and 188 lb-ft of torque. The engine is said to have been completely rebuilt in 2011 along with the installation of a new clutch and new engine bay pad. In 2019, Beck’s European of Scottsdale, AZ performed a valve adjustment, and fluid change. The car is said to be in excellent running condition.

The Carrera 3.0 Targa holds a special place in Porsche history due to its limited production number and larger 3.0 L engine which was a direct development of the 2.8 RSR racing engine of the early ’70s.

The sale will also include, two keys, ownership history since new, 1984 DOT/EPA Federalization documents, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, factory tools, and air pump.

@Greejeff We have examined the area on the right inner fender closely and it does not appear to be any deeper than what you can see. It is surprising with all the work done mechanically and cosmetically to this car that it was not addressed and I will add it is in an unusual place. We thought it could be pretty easily treated with neutralizer and patched but in the end we elected to leave it alone for full disclosure to its next assumed long term owner. The pedal box is solid with only a bit of corrosion on the fasteners.

How extensive is the rust in the frunk? Also, Is there some rust on the floor under the pedals? Thanks, beautiful car!

Greetings, and welcome to my auction!

This is a rare opportunity to own a very rare Porsche 911.

The 1977 Carrera 3.0 was not available in North America. It shared its engine with the legendary 930 Turbo albeit without the turbo. It also incorporated wider bodywork than the 911S, which would be adopted by the succeeding 911SC range. Total production over two years is less than 3000 units with less than 300 of those '77 Targas.

This example is highly documented, including all of the DOT and EPA certification process and approvals when the car was purchased from its second owner out of Germany by a Porsche specialist in 1984 during the hey day of Grey Market cars in the USA. Following the certification approvals in 1985 the car was sold to its longtime owner who we purchased it from late last year.

The car's North American history has been extensively documented, highlighted by a high quality repaint in 2014 and mechanical overhaul in 2015. Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms all original running gear. An insurance appraisal from 2017 values this car at $115,000.00.

The car shows beautifully in its stunning and rare Minerva Blue over black leather. Everything works and the aftermarket Alpine CD unit sounds great. The Targa top has also been restored in recent years. The dash is flawless. Tires are fresh. This car is ready to drive and enjoy for years to come.

And drive well it does! The 3.0 has a distinct power delivery from either the 2.7 of the 911S or the 3.0 that followed in the 911SC. It runs strong, rolls straight, shifts smooth, steers and stops as you would expect of a Porsche 911.

Inspections are welcomed and encouraged but these auctions move fast so if you are inclined to do so, get with it!!

I will be monitoring the auction closely and will answer any questions or requests you may have. Thanks and lets sell this car!
