Up for auction is this 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera finished in Platinum Metallic over black leather.  One of only 727 examples sold in the U.S. for the 1977 model year, this 930 represents the last of the Turbo Carreras featuring the original 3.0L engine design and iconic Whale Tail rear spoiler.  A West Coast car, this Turbo was sold new in San Francisco and spent the early years of its life in Reno, Nevada before it was acquired by an officer stationed at the March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, California. It was then traded to a friend in the Palm Springs area who later sold the car to its current owner in Southern Oregon about 10 years ago.  Several upgraded components have been installed, the headliner has been replaced, and the original engine underwent a complete overhaul within the last few thousand miles.  This rare numbers-matching 1977 Turbo Carrera is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Texas with approximately 128k miles on the odometer.

This 930 comes finished in Platinum Metallic with chrome window moldings, front fog lights, a rear window wiper, and black stone guards applied over the rear fenders.  The windows have been tinted and a minor paint blemish is noted on the lower driver-side rocker panel.  The seller reports some areas of the exterior to have likely been refinished under prior ownership, additional images are provided in the gallery.  The polished 16” Fuchs wheels come fitted with colored Porsche center crests and a set of Toyo Proxes tires.

Inside, the black leather interior has been refurbished with a reupholstered driver seat and a new headliner.  An upgraded Sony radio has been fitted along with a set of Carrera script floormats, a vintage Clifford alarm system, and a genuine 930S three-spoke black leather steering wheel.  A few small imperfections are noted on the dashboard and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional apart from the headlight washers.  The original steering wheel is also said to accompany the sale.

This 930 carries its original 3.0L turbocharged flat-six engine paired with a numbers-matching 4-speed manual gearbox.  Images of the case stampings and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity are provided in the gallery.  The seller’s mechanic found the engine to have been fitted with performance cams, upgraded exhaust, and an oxygen sensor which works in conjunction with a handheld computer for engine tuning.  New CV joints and brakes are said to have been installed prior to the current owner’s purchase about 10 years ago, and the engine was overhauled by Carrera Medford in 2013 including new seals, gaskets, a clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing.

This sale will include service records, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title. A well-maintained example of an early Porsche 930, this 1977 Turbo Carrera is ready to begin its journey with a new owner.

All Photos are within a few weeks to 4 months. In the last 16 months I have been building my retirement home and have had very little time to drive this great ride. Maybe only a thousand miles or so. In the last month perhaps 100 miles.

  • ferrari400i (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

I noticed that these are the same pictures and the same mileage from when listed on another auction last year. Same condition? How many miles added since last year? Do you have any recent photos? Thanks

  • ferrari400i (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Thanks! just saw it on the receipts

  • johnah (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Since the rebuild only a few thousand miles have been logged.

  • ferrari400i (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

    Hello,

How many miles have been added since 2013 rebuild?

    Thanks

  • johnah (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

This car is in Oregon. I informed Pcarmarket of the error the first day of the auction and it was never changed, sorry for the confusion. The AC is working fine. It is original and hasn't been converted. It may need a small charge of Freon.

  • JmanTX (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Is the car in TX or OR, listing shows TX but plates say Oregon. Is AC working properly, has freon been converted?

  • johnah (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

This car was registered in California for many years and must have passed smog tests. I have had this car for around 10 years and there is possibly an auxiliary smog hose blocked off that I haven't identified and the Porsche dealer didn't suggest anything altered or added.

  • Ccristo (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Johnah- the car was registered in CA. Since then, was anything removed that would potentially inhibit it from passing smog in CA?

    Awesome car!! GLWS

  • johnah (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Many older Porsches have some issues in the front trunk , fenders and battery tray. This car, being a California car for the majority of its existence, it is pristine and solid. I am unaware of any rust anywhere.

Thanks for the comment posrsr. I was told before that the tach was possibly a newer one, but I am not that sharp noticing small things like that to know for sure. I know the windshield was replaced in the past. Not sure of the name of that.

  • Posrsr (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Being a 77 shouldn’t it have the one year only higher reading boost gauge ? IIRC the gauge should go to 1.5 lbs boost. Also looks like aftermarket H4 glass. Lovely car nevertheless GLWTA

  • johnah (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Thanks sportscarguy3 for the positive appreciation for this car. I loved it since I first saw it and bought on the spot. It has been a very dependable and fun car for myself and my kids for many years. Thinning out my herd now that I am retired and pushing 70. It's hell to get old!!!

If you look at the C of A, it shows the car was manufactured 10/76 as a 1977 model. The first turbos didn.t have intercoolers and thus a different whale tail design. That is what is very appealing to me. With an overhauled motor, the sports cam and exhaust, this car will fly. I think it is faster than my 1988 930 cabriolet.

  • sportscarguy3 (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Very rare and interesting Porsche 930 turbo
I only learned of the interesting older 930 Turbo’s not having an intercooler recently when I took my new 1987 930 turbo to a great Porsche mechanic here in Santa Rosa California
    Wayland motorsports
They have several unique older Porsche’s in the shop at any given time including an incredible 1977 930 Turbo
I was fortunate enough to get a ride in that car and it was a wonderful experience
This unique 930, even with the high mileage, is a gem and should do well
    Good luck all

  • CABRIOLET-INT (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

To those new to 930's........Intercooled engine started in 1978. Vin# has 7 in beginning for production 1977. I have owned over 40 930's great cars when driven properly

  • bpruehs 2 years, 4 monthsago

@bpruehs Is it a 76 build? I realize some 76’s didn’t have the intercooler. But this is listed as a 77. Educate me! Haha

  • bpruehs 2 years, 4 monthsago

Can you explain the engine? In the pics it appears to be an air cooled flat six. Where is the Turbo intercooler seen on top of all 930’s?

  • johnah (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Sorry, but I won't be able to post a photo of the engine number until I return home on Friday, Dec. 3.
