Available for auction at no reserve is this 1978 Mercedes-Benz W116 450 SEL finished in Thistle Green Metallic over a beige interior. The first model to officially join the S-Class family, the W116 was produced from 1972 to 1980 as Mercedes' flagship luxury car. This long-wheelbase 1978 example comes equipped with the larger 4.5 L M117 V8, a sunroof, and power accessories. Representing a bygone era of craftsmanship and build quality, this W116 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Arizona showing approximately 123k miles on the odometer.
This 450 SEL comes finished in Thistle Green Metallic and features chrome accents around the windows, front grille, bumpers, side moldings, and mirror caps. The car rides on a set of factory 14” Bundt wheels dressed in Michelin Defender tires. Several cosmetic imperfections are depicted in the photo gallery.
The beige upholstery is accented by textured inserts on the seats and door panels along with wood veneers across the dashboard and center console. Equipment includes climate control, power windows, a power sunroof, a locking glove box, and vintage Blaupunkt radio. Wear is present on the seating surfaces as well as cracks in the wood veneers and discoloration of the carpets.
Power comes from a 4.5L M117 V8 which was factory rated at 180 HP and 220 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a three-speed automatic transmission. The W116 came standard with independent suspension as well as disc brakes front and rear. The seller describes the car to be in strong running order and reports no outstanding service items at this time.
