Now available for auction is this 1978 Porsche 911 SC finished in Black over a Cork leather interior.  Purchased by the seller in 1992, this 911 SC features a flat-six engine with a 3.2L upgraded displacement as well as factory front and rear spoilers.  With a recent glass-out respray in its factory original color, this 1978 example is said to remain beautifully presented while under the care of its owner of nearly 30 years out of Albany, NY.

This 911 was treated to a recent glass-out bare metal respray in its factory specified color of Black (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  New window seals were installed during this time along with the replacement of the front windshield.  Front and rear spoilers are factory equipped and this SC rides on genuine chrome Fuchs wheels with brand-new Firestone tires.

Inside, the Cork leather interior has been recently refreshed with new carpeting, headliner and dashboard upholstery.  The seats were previously reupholstered, and an aftermarket Kenwood radio has been installed along with upgraded speakers and an alarm system with remote door locks.  The clock is reported to have intermittent issues, although the seller has confirmed all other gauges and accessories to be fully functional.

In 1995 under the current ownership, this numbers-matching 911 received a full engine rebuild with larger 98mm Mahle pistons and cylinders making for an upgraded displacement of approximately 3.2L and a claimed power output of nearly 220 HP.  Upgraded Carrera chain tensioners were installed during this time along with SSI stainless steel heat exchangers, an air box pop-off valve and a radiator oil cooler in the front fender replacing the factory loop-style unit.   The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transmission with a short shift kit.  The engine rebuild was carried out at 128k miles and a new clutch kit was installed in 2004 within the last 10k miles.  Complete service records are available from 1992 and this SC is said to be in excellent driving condition with all routine maintenance up to date.

This sale will include a set of 2 keys with aftermarket remote key fobs, original pistons and cylinders, a toolkit, air pump, spare tire, owner’s manuals, service records, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and the original bill of sale from the selling Porsche dealership in Fairfield, CT.  This tastefully upgraded SC makes the ideal air cooled 911 for any passionate driving enthusiast.

@Npmn @Npmn, No there are no issues shifting with gears 3 thru 5. Thanks.

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@CurtGT3RS , The lower engine, replacing the pistons, cylinders and tensioners and timing chains was done 57K mikes ago. The upper engine valve guides, cams were done 27K miles ago. Thanks.

  • Npmn (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Are there any issues shifting into gears 3 to 5? I imagine this is fine, however, the video is short/awkward and it isn’t clear what is going on at the end when it cuts out.

  • CurtGT3RS (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Beautiful car - how many miles have you driven since the engine rebuild?
    Thanks!

I installed a Weltmeister 911 Short Shift Kit for all 915 gearboxes from 1972-85, which reduces travel by 25%. It really helped in making the car more enjoyable to drive. Thanks for your question.

  • Npmn (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Beautiful car! What type of short shift kit is installed, and what is the percent shift change?

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Roma @Roma, A driving video was uploaded for the 78 911SC, Thank you. Sorry if the camera is a bit shaky during filming.

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@991.1GT3 a driving video has been uploaded. Thanks.

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

The last picture is of the car before the recent repaint and change to chrome Fuchs wheels. I added the Carrera script for a number of years because I liked the looks of it. They did not make a Carrera model in the production years of this model, the 911SC 1978-1983.

Yes, the wheels could be swapped. The buyer could get the original wheels instead of the chrome ones currently on the car, if he/she so prefers. The original wheels look like the ones on the red 1986 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA CABRIOLET 5-SPEED auction currently on this site. Thank you.

  • Npmn (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

how do the original wheels differ from those included in the sale? Could the buyer have their choice of the original or present wheels if preferred?

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

The engine runs great. There are no issues such as broken head studs. The engine number is 6280582. Thank you.

  • mm911 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Any engine numbers? Broken head studs? Thanks

The original wheels - The original wheels are NOT included in this auction. However, I do have them and they will be made available for separate purchase to the buyer of the car. The price will be a reasonable negotiated price with the buyer. They are not included in the purchase price of this car auction. The original wheels are 16 inch Fuchs as well. They are in good shape and completely usable. They just have the a few usual blemishes, scrapes, cuts , poor paint etc. They are dated 1977. Again, they are NOT included in the auction, or auction price of this car. Thank you.

A driving video - Yes. me and my wife made one yesterday. I don't see a way for me to upload it, But I sent it to the administrators. It is the weekend, so hopefully Monday. The car runs great has very good power. It really feels smooth and secure on the highway. You can really take corners fast as long as you apply the throttle through the turn. It is fun to turn into the corners and exit faster. The video is a bit shaky with hand held phone during acceleration and cornering, but I will try to get it posted ASAP. Thanks.

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

The AC. Thank you for reminding me. The air conditioning does not work. As you saw, I have removed the compressor from the engine bay. I found it never worked great and removing it saved a few HP and some weight, plus cleaned up the engine compartment. I do have all the components saved; so they go with the car . Thanks for the question! I totally forgot.

  • Roma (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Interesting car. Kudos to the Porshau4ea for long term ownership. Is it possible to get a short video of the engine running and maybe a short drive? THX

  • jspearin (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Any information about the AC that was originally optioned with the car? It doesn’t look like it is installed at the moment.

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

The tail - I found several automotive magazine articles from 1978 in which they first drive the 911SC. The same type of tail I have on my car is shown in the pictures on the one they test. My car also has the 16 inch wheels. The articles are compiled in the book "Porsche 911SC 1978-1983" by Brookland Books, ISBN 0 948207 17 0. Thanks.

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

I will try to find some pictures of it during bare metal during the repaint. $20k was spent on it recently in paint and restoration. There was no rust, just a few door dings and small dents that were repaired. I will try to make a driving video. Thanks.

  • 991.1GT3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Porshau4ea thank you Mike. Any receipts from the paint work and pics prior?

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

No I don't have recent compression or leak down tests.
    Yes, the wipers work.
There are probably a few drops of oil under it sometimes. It does not get driven very much.
    Thank you.

  • 991.1GT3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Do you have recent compression or leak down tests?
Do the wipers work? I’m planning to drive in the rain.
    Any leaks after sitting?

  • 991.1GT3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 5 monthsago

Do you have receipts from the repaint and pictures showing the prior condition? Was there any rust or rust repairs done at that time? Can you upload a driving video?

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

The major engine work receipts are in the last photo. They are from a while ago. Prices, (and salaries) were different back then and $9k was a lot of money in 1995. It is a little hard to adjust for inflation in our minds. The original bill of sale for this car from the dealer is in the binder. In 1978 this car cost $22k new. That was very expensive then. How much is a new 911 today? 120k? This car is a classic!

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 5 monthsago

This car has the original and correct factory tail. This all-rubber tail is the only type correct for the SC model. Only early SC models could be ordered with a tail. This tail is fairly rare, but looking at a number of early SC models, you do find a few like this one.

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Porshau4ea OK I SEE IT NOW

20 years ago engine work, good price .....if we could do it that cheap today
    Car and documentation looks great

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 5 monthsago

@Porshau4ea Couple questions, that’s not a factory tail but after market
    You have the orginal tail?

    See no engine paperwork yet

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

Thank you! I think it is gorgeous as well. The paint is brand new and has not been treated yet with ceramic or other protective coatings. The engine rebuild invoices are in the last photo. The valves were adjusted 5K miles ago. Also a new alternator was installed then. Thank you.

  • Mikeamoss (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

    Mike,
Car looks AWESOME!! Is there any PPF to protect that stunning paint? Could you provide a copy of the engine rebuild invoice?

    Good Luck

  • Porshau4ea (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

Hello, my name is Mike and I am the owner of this 911SC since 1992. This car has the original motor with a change to 98mm pistons with a higher compression ratio for a little more HP. This bolt-on performance modification is described in Bruce Anderson's book "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook". Fell free to ask questions and I will try to answer them to my best ability. Thanks!
