Available for auction is this 1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe finished in Grand Prix White over a Linen leather interior. In 1978, Porsche introduced the 3.0-liter 911SC with an engine renowned for its reliability increase compared to previous models. This example is one of 2,436 Coupe versions produced in 1978 and features equipment including a sunroof, leather seats, air conditioning, power-adjustable mirrors, and 16” Fuchs wheels. This 911SC has been garage-stored by its most recent owner and is now being offered for auction out of New York with approximately 92k miles on the odometer.

This SC comes finished in Grand Prix White and includes a sunroof, black bumper bellows, electrically adjustable body-colored exterior mirrors, and a taillight panel with a black “911SC” designation. The first-year 1978 911SC can be distinguished from the later models by its chrome-plated door handles and headlamp rings. The 16” Fuchs wheels are dressed in General tires at the front and Sumitomo Srixon tires at the rear, all showing approximately 75% tread remaining. An OEM Porsche replacement hood has been fitted, and the front bumper has been refinished but is recommended for another respray. The seller notes some cosmetic imperfections throughout the exterior, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Linen and black interior features perforated leather seats and an optional air conditioning unit. Modifications include a period-correct aftermarket Nardo steering wheel and shifter knob, white VDO-style instrument dials, and an updated Sony replacement audio head unit, CD changer, and amplifier. Signs of wear are shown on the seats and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly.

The 911SC equips an air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine that sends up to 180 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual transaxle. The seller describes the vehicle to be in strong running order and notes that it was acquired from an estate and service records have not yet been located. The seller also notes that the factory secondary air injection system has been removed, therefore the car may not pass an emissions test in some states.

This sale will include a clean title.

@PanchoSapien This 911SC has been with the most recent owner since ‘98. It passed NYS Safety inspection in 2022z

  • PanchoSapien (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@MCMotorcars @MCMotorcars, can you share the engine number?

  • MCMotorcars (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@PanchoSapien The drivetrain appears to be original. We haven’t verified date codes etc. The drivetrain functions seamlessly & starts instantly. A/C functions as well.

@Needtoaddanotherone2 This 1978 911SC is located in Durham, NC

  • Needtoaddanotherone2 (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@PCARMARKET It didn't help at all. The listing says auctioned out of N.Y. The side bar list the location as Durham N.C. A simple answer would have been sufficient instead of responding as if I were a 12 year old. So is the car in DURHAM, N.C. or N.Y.

  • PCARMARKET 1 year, 5 monthsago

@Needtoaddanotherone2 the gray information box contains the nuts and bolts of the listing including the location. Hope this helps.

@JayBo This appears to be the original drivetrain. Common sense suggests taking into account the reliability factor of these motors, it’s highly likely original. We’re not claiming this to be a matching numbers 100% original vehicle. We can state that the drivetrain functions seamlessly. It does not exhibit signs of track use either.
These vehicles were not subject to the drag racing scene like the late ‘60’s Muscle Cars. Most of the motors in those vehicles were smoked w/in the first 3-4 yrs. 90% of the remaining muscle cars have replacement motors.

My apologies if I missed it in previous comments. Is this the original engine & transmission to the car?

  • MCMotorcars (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@tomivorrichards Thanks for reaching out. I’ll snap the requested images in the morning & get them uploaded to the listing. This 911SC has been garaged for the past 24yrs. There’s no rust at the base of the windshield. Good luck with the bidding.

  • tomivorrichards (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@MCMotorcars this SC is a beauty, I personally love to see used aircooled Porsches vs garage queens. I'd do a few outlaw mods, a few reliability mods/services as needed then drive the heck out of it without stressing about my $20k paintjob.

Is it possible to get extra photos of the following areas?
-Battery tray + general frunk compartment with carpet pulled completely out
    -Base of the windshield
-Underside of the car from tip to tail
I'm a Canadian bidder so the car would need to pass a BC inspection for me to be able to register it. I'm not afraid of putting in some work to get it to pass, but I don't want to be slapped with a huge metalwork bill.

Any luck tracking down those service records? I'd love to know if it has updated chain tensioners, pop off valve etc? Has the engine ever been opened up or rebuilt?

    Thanks

@Vroom Rear tires are ‘03 Date coded.
Front Tires are ‘08 Date Coded.

  • MCMotorcars (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@Vroom No leak down or compression test performed. I’ve driven this 911SC. It starts instantly (better than some of our low mile 992 examples), the drivetrain pulls strong, shifts as expected (shifter bushings may need to be replaced soon), brakes are stiff and function normally & it tracks straight. I’ve driven dozens of ‘70’s & ‘80’s 911’s.

@redgard the Fuchs wheels are Porsche parts that have been refinished. Whether they’re original this vehicle has not been confirmed.

  • redgard (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

The video says ‘fuchs style wheels’ are they real fuchs or just copies?

  • MCMotorcars (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@Gregory This 911SC is currently housed indoors at our Durham, NC location.

  • Gregory (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

I have a white 911 with an unpainted ducktail - so naturally this car appeals to me!! Totally agree with Another911.
Question - "auction out of NY" ? I assume the car is with you in Durham NC, but confirming.
    thanks

  • Another911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

I think there are a bunch of guys with scars on their knuckles and some great ideas in their skull that are thinking exactly what they want to do with this car. This car auction is so much more interesting to watch than is another 991 GT3 garage queen auction! GLWA!

  • MCMotorcars (seller) 1 year, 5 monthsago

@Quackbury Thanks for restating the obvious!
This 911SC is a component of an estate sale. We’re assisting the executor of the estate find a worthy new home for this Porsche. Your assessment is a bit dramatic. We all know Porsche enthusiasts that take pleasure in bringing a solid body (no rust) & fully functioning running gear back to its former glory or creating an outlaw restomod. This 911SC is a perfect candidate for such an undertaking. We’ve listed this example here & Hemmings exclusively to make a connection with a suitable new owner/home. Cheers!

  • Quackbury (registered bidder) 1 year, 5 monthsago

Oh my. You poor thing, you've led a rough life.

"The first-year 1978 911SC can be distinguished from the later models by its chrome-plated door handles and headlamp rings. " Except this example has the painted headlamp surrounds (the sugar scoops, in fact) and black door handles. Unpainted ducktail spoiler, but painted (!) front air dam (I'm amazed the prior owner thought the paint would adhere long to the rubber air dam). Leather is awful. Maintenance records unavailable. Yikes.

MC Motorcars, any serious bidder is going to want to confirm that the chain tensioners have been replaced by the later Carrera oil-fed tensioners, and that the pop-off valve has been installed in the airbox. If Porsches are your "bread and butter" you likely know that but a bidder who has never owned an SC may not.

Photos of the battery box and the undercarriage would be most helpful as well.

There are RUF Porsches and there are ROUGH Porsches, and sadly this one is almost-barn-find-rough. Hopefully she will find a good home, even if the new owner turns her into a long hood resto mod.
