Representing the launch year of the Porsche 911SC, this 1978 Targa has been under the care of the seller for the past 21 years after it had been owned by his brother. The car is finished in a dark grey metallic color and features a black interior with optional Sport Seats. Benefitting from extensive maintenance including a complete repaint and engine rebuild, this 911SC Targa is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Rhode Island showing approximately 137k miles on the odometer.
This 911SC is said to have been completely disassembled and treated to rust repairs before being completely repainted in the current dark grey metallic color. Equipment includes a silver Targa band and removable roof panel, chrome headlight rings, and 15” Fuchs wheels. The seller notes the car has always been garage-kept and describes the finish to be in good overall condition with only a couple of small scratches, detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The black interior features a pair of optional Sport Seats that were reupholstered in leather about 5 years ago. A new aftermarket radio has been installed and the seller reports all accessories and instrumentation to be working properly apart from the clock and oil pressure gauge.
An air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 180 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual transaxle. The seller reports the engine was rebuilt under their ownership and that the alternator was replaced along with the installation of a short shifter kit.
This sale will include a clean title.

@grillage hi, its funny you noticed the RW, i noticed years ago and completely had forgotten about it. my thought was someone was resentful about not having a Porsche and acted out by disfiguring beauty, the thing is that doesn't mean they win. Its been shared with me that Japanese potters will complete a work and then ding it because nothing is perfect. whether that is a true story or not the point is clear. jack

@grillage hi, I don’t know what RW. Means ? I had the car repainted in 2016 a Ford color. I had different medical problems since that year and haven’t used the car often since then. I am selling this Porsche in order to have a newer model easier to drive altho not air cooled. My health has returned. Thanks for your interest. Jack

@Vroom I have owned the car for 21 years and neither worked since purchase. So not sure. Good question
@Damaho912 sadly I do not have access to my files relative to the Porsche as they are in storage since I am in the process of building a house. Hopefully I will be able to forward in March.
Hello @gstroe. Actually, I would say documentation is even more important on a car with 140k miles vs a museum piece. And especially if the listing states an engine rebuild. “Rebuild” can mean different things to many people. I’m not referring to paperwork such as the original bill of sale or the name of the original owner. A perfectly legit request from @Ranger3 imo.
Any idea why the clock and oil pressure gauge do not work? Any documentation from a mechanic as to diagnosis and cost for repair? Does the missing lever on the side of the driver's seat affect the seat in any way? There also appear to be a number of large cracks in the dashboard. Can you put some additional pictures of the dashboard and the damage to the front bumper? Thank you.

@gstroe, my request has nothing to do with chain of custody of owners. Have you ever had broken head studs overlooked on a PPI? That is a 15K repair if farmed out to a Porsche shop. Compression and leak down do not always reveal a broken stud or two. Therefore, it is prudent to ask for the details of the engine rebuild. Cheers!

@Damaho912 Hi there, there is this thing with the maintenance records. I also have a '79 Targa Euro imported to the US in 1985. I have lots of paperwork starting with the original bill of sale and the name of the first owner in Germany. But do such things matter for a car that has 140,000 miles and is almost 45 years old? I can understand for a car that has a couple of thousand miles and is a museum piece, but not for a driver. I am much more interested in the present condition, no rust, compression and leak-down test, and an overall inspection by a known Porsche garage or a Porsche dealer. I did all this when I bought mine in August 2000 and can't complain. Just saying, no offense to anyone, history is nice, proof of present condition is much better

Nice targa. Like the brushed targa bar (normally black I believe on a ‘78?). If I can offer my two cents, do whatever you can to dig up those one or two boxes of paperwork. In order for you to get top dollar, replies like yours to @Ranger3 won’t do anything to help your cause. Documentation on these is EVERYTHING! And the more the better! Good luck with the auction.
@Ranger3 I am in the process of moving and the Porsche's paperwork is in a box in one od two packed storage unit. Not being particularly mechanical i do remember replacing the tensioners during the rebuild as to the other parts i presume that have been addressed since the list of replacements and labor was quite lengthy. I promise that whomever buys the car I will provide the file as soon as available, hopefull in late March. I can assure you that any mechanical issue that came up was promptly addressed.
