Finished in Grand Prix White over a special-order blue leather interior with optional Sport Seats, this 1978 Porsche 911SC Targa was originally sold from Neufield Porsche Audi of Burlingame, California, and was purchased by the seller, its second owner, in 1997 with 86k miles on the odometer. Supported by nearly three decades of unbroken ownership and documented service history, this 911SC is now being offered for auction out of California while showing approximately 150k miles.
This 911SC is finished in Grand Prix White with a contrasting black Targa bar and removable roof panel. Other equipment includes body-colored headlamp bezels, front fog lights, a fender-mounted antenna, a heated rear window, U.S. market bumperettes, and 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels. The seller indicates the doors were refinished under prior ownership and the Targa top was redone by Liebes Autobody of Redwood City along with refinishing the black wheel centers, Targa bar, and front hood. The car's rear end was also professionally repaired after minor accident damage in the late 1990s. Some cosmetic imperfections are noted around the exterior and the tires are about 10 years old, detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is appointed with special-order blue leather upholstery and optional Sport Seats complemented by a black leather dashboard, carpets, and a three-spoke steering wheel. Accessories include power windows, air conditioning, a heater, cruise control, analog VDO gauges, a quartz clock, and an aftermarket stereo. The seller indicates sheepskin seat covers have preserved the leather upholstery, although the dashboard leather has shrunk from its original position with age. The door pocket lids sink slightly past their stopping point and some indentations are noted on the leather gauge cover opposite the steering wheel. All gauges and accessories are said to be working properly, although the A/C is not currently charged and the in-dash CD player is inoperative.
Rated at 180 HP and 175 b.-ft of torque, the air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine delivers power to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The head studs were replaced under prior ownership and the suspension has been fitted with Bilstein shocks. Services completed under the current ownership are provided below with their corresponding mileages.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire, a car cover, a battery charger, sheepskin seat covers, a spare fuel pump and gas cap, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thanks for visiting the 78 Targa auction. Classic Cars Ltd. is representing this 2-owner Targa for the local owner who has owned the car since 1997. Both owners were very particular with maintenance and addressed anything that needed to be done with the car (see stack of receipts in the gallery). I pulled out a few receipts that highlighted major work and the most recent work done and added them to the gallery. Having spent a good amount of time with the car (and being an air-cooled enthusiast), here are my observations:
Driving/Mechanical- You can tell attention has been paid to this car mechanically. It is not tired. Many we get in are ignored and they FEEL like it, not this one. This thing runs strong, pulls evenly throughout the revs, and tracks/brakes straight. Starts quickly and idles with no hesitation. Shifts are smooth. The owner says it’s never failed a smog test. The tires are in good condition but 10 years old and should be replaced. Conclusion: Get tires of your choice. Benchmark mechanicals if you want, or just drive it.
Exterior- Overall good condition. No rust anywhere. There are a couple of dings that life has given the car over the years. An errant bat swung over the driver-side light that left a small dent that PDR could fix along with a few others around the car but nothing major as you can see from the photos. The hood was painted to refresh the road rash. The doors were also painted (prior to the current owner) possibly for failed check straps. The paint was crazing on the doors and the owner had them color sanded prior to the sale. They look excellent now. Conclusion: Drive it as is. If you want close to perfect, PDR a few small dings, paint correction, and paint the lower front and rear valance and you are 90% of the look for 10-20% of the cost of a respray.
Interior- The most unique part of this car. I tried to find the color code but no luck. I believe it is a special order leather interior with Sport Seat option done in Minerva Blue. It is gorgeous. Both owners had high-quality sheepskin covers on the seats throughout their ownership, so the seats are in excellent condition. Very little color fade and slight wear on the bolsters and piping. Cushions are still very supportive and pliable. The leather is soft after a few treatments of leather honey. Like most original leather dashes of the era that have been driven and exposed to the sun, the leather on the dash has shrunk beyond its original anchor points. Luckily it is black, and the underlying surfaces are as well so there is no offensive contrast. The carpets are in great shape. everything works except the in-dash single CD player, however, the 6 CD changer in the frunk does work. According to the owner, AC works but currently is not charged (R12). Conclusion: I wouldn't touch a thing. If you are a purist, install an older Blaupunkt. If you are nitpicky, replace the gaskets around the Targa top area that show wear. Whatever you do, don’t mess with the seats! ; )

@ClassicCarsLtd is there any chance you will be uploading a drive video running through the gears? Thanks much.
@Kevinmr yes but by 94, when the studs where changed, there had been at least two or three revisions to the Divalar studs.
@seller is it the case that the original Dilavar studs were replaced with Dilavars back in 1994 by The Stable in SF? Just curious about replacing Dilavars with Dilavars. Thanks.
@SoCal4me absolutely, just drive it! BTW, drive video coming soon.
A perfect daily driver...
Bid in the amount of $10,000
@Lprado Thanks for the question. The owner said everything works, it just needs a charge of R12.
How’s the AC on the car?
