Representing the launch year of the Porsche 911SC, this 1978 Targa was acquired by the seller in September 2023 after sitting untouched in a climate-controlled storage facility for approximately 19 years. Upon acquisition, the vehicle was not running although the fuel tank, pump, filter, and accumulator had recently been replaced. Having undergone some necessary service items, this 911 was brought back to running order and is now a great candidate for restoration. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
This 911 is said to have been refinished over 20 years ago in the current red color, deviating from its light brown metallic factory paint. Details include a black Targa band and removable roof panel along with chrome window trim. It has been fitted with a rear whale tail spoiler, a rear Turbo designation, chrome taillight trim, red-finished brake calipers, and 16” ATS Cookie Cutter wheels dressed in older tires. The seller notes the driver’s side door and rear quarter panel appear to have been resprayed, there is an area of paint peeling on the hood, and the Targa top requires replacement.
The cabin presents tan leather upholstery and matching floor mats contrasted with black dashboard and door panels. Modifications include a leather-wrapped MOMO steering wheel, an aftermarket radio, and an aftermarket shift knob. The seller adds that the clock is currently inoperable.
An air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 180 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 manual transaxle. This example was acquired by the seller as a non-running project car, and upon acquisition, it was found that the fuel tank, pump, filter, and accumulator had recently been replaced. The seller states that the engine began to run under their ownership after some service items and no oil leaks have been identified. Updated hydraulic chain tensioners have been installed and the following service items were performed:
- Engine and transmission removed
- Rebuilt all four calipers and painted red; replaced flex hoses, brake pads, and all four rotors
- Replaced clutch, TOB, rear main seal, and re-surfaced the flywheel
- Re-sealed the thermostat “O” ring, resealed the breather housing, and replaced the oil pressure switch
- Cleaned and painted the sheet metal and fiberglass engine cover, and powder coated the fan and fan housing
- Adjusted the valves, replaced the spark plugs and wires
- Replaced 1st & 2nd gear synchros and the operating sleeve
- Replaced the shift rod bushings

Jimbo1907- also, when a stud breaks the head nut and partial stud are loose or laying in the head. When the valves were adjusted, all of the head nuts were intact and torque checked to 24lbs.
Jimbo1907- Usually when a stud breaks, there is seepage between the cylinder and the head and none has been observed. Yes, the tensioners have been updated. I will try to get Pcar to upload some pix now

Not serial number.
WH911- Neither. Most 911's show no oil when cold started. Remember, the oil level is checked when the engine is at operating temp, about 180 degrees.
beenz1- since the condition of the interior is fair to good, I would assume that the interior has been redone previously. I have no history of previous ownership(s) since I bought the car from a collector who buys other collections. As far as holding on to the car, temp storage is not a problem if if is paid for in full. It is currently in my driveway with a quality cover on it.
The oil level gauge shows very low in the startup video. Is the oil that low or the gauge not working?

Can I assume carpets and upholstery are not original given 221 miles?
What sort of grace is available pickup wise . I’m overseas and shipping often takes time to sort.
Any idea of how many previous owners?

PorscheDoc- That is the number that is stamped On the engine. I sent it to Pcar but apparently they have not uploaded it yet. I will remind them...

EVantage-Wen the car was on the rack for other work, all of the suspension appeared to be in good condition. No leaking shocks, no bulging bushings but it did have a bad tie rod bushing ( right side)on the rack end due to someone's prior inability to properly set the Toe. They twisted the rack end at a 45 degree which causes extreme wear on that bushing. We replaced the tie rods with Turbo units and aligned. The car tracks straight and besides the flat spot tires, drives well.
PorscheDoc- The engine type is 930/04, 180 HP according to the factory spec book. The shroud Was red with green on the backside. I repainted it green without checking factory specs, sorry about that. With a production date of 04/78, maybe the were using the last of the 2.7's and painted them red..
What is the condition of the suspension, shocks, springs, bushings? Any work done to them? 221K on the odometer would seem like it’s on the 3rd set of parts or so.
The engine type number would be helpful? 9**/** ?
It seems to have a green air shroud that's indictive to the 2.7L engines!
3.0L engines shrouds are Red!

Jtorres921- Absolutely no rust anywhere on the car, even the battery area, see photo 68. The original color was Copper Brown ( # 443 ) and can be seen in the frunk, pics 64 & 67 and the engine compartment Pics 73 & 86
Is there any signs of rust on the car anywhere? Is under the battery area good? Is there any signs of the the original color anywhere?
