Up for auction at no-reserve is this 1978 Porsche 924 finished in Malaga Red over a tan leatherette interior. Representing Porsche’s original water-cooled transaxle sports car, this 924 was delivered new on March 9th, 1978 from Gardner Motors Porsche/Audi in Bernardsville New Jersey. It would remain under the care of its original owner up until 1999 before being acquired by the second owner who kept the car up until 2019 when it was purchased by the seller. It is now being offered for auction without reserve by the seller in New York accompanied by the original owner’s manuals, warranty book, and a collection of service records.
This 924 is presented in its original color of Malaga Red (L30C), and the car is suspected to have been previously refinished. Some cosmetic flaws and imperfections are depicted in the photo gallery. This example rides on factory 14” Tarantula wheels with an additional full-size spare located in the trunk.
Inside, this 924 is appointed with a tan leatherette interior featuring a brown dashboard and upper door panels. The cabin shows to have been well preserved aside from a tear in the passenger seat upholstery. A protective cover has been applied over the dashboard and the original 8-track radio remains in place. At a reading of approximately 34k-miles in September of 2007, the 5-digit odometer was replaced with a used unit. The current odometer reading is approximately 21k-miles and the true mileage on the car is reported to be closer to 38k-miles. The A/C system is present but is currently inoperable as the compressor clutch will not engage.
This 924 is equipped with a VW/Audi-sourced 2.0L inline-four engine that sends approximately 110 HP to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transaxle. A collection of service records will be included detailing a history of routine maintenance throughout the years.
This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, warranty book, an assortment of service records, and a clean title. At no reserve, this 924 offers a perfect opportunity for any enthusiast looking to get behind the wheel of a vintage transaxle Porsche.

@fprelvukaj Yes. It truly is a unique piece and hope it finds a good home.
@stephenselzler Thanks. This seriously brings you back to a bygone era just sitting in the car. Very hard to part.
@fprelvukaj Look at that steering wheel too. Unique from the early '80s 924s, and I probably prefer this one too. NOW I'M GETTING TEMPTED.
@stephenselzler Agree. On the early models they didn't come standard with the side view mirrors you had to add which you can see this one has only on the driver side adding to its uniqueness. I true sign of its time. And the no sunroof. It's amazing to see such a good example still out there. Good luck.
This brings back memories of my stepfather's '86 944. The 924s of the late '70s to kick off this whole platform are a wild thing to look at and compare to memories of the later cars. Good luck with the auction!

@n_l original
Was the A/C in this car an aftermarket/dealer add-on? On my '79, the A/C control is on a knob in teh center stack (where the clock is on this car). Didn't know if that was an aftermarket thing, or just a '78 thing..
Bid in the amount of $2,000
@ck1995 It is running good. No issues. I am not near the car location at this moment so I'm sorry I wouldn't be able to do a cold run.
Beyond the A/C, what is the mechanical condition of the car, does it run properly or in need of anything? How is the clutch? Would a cold start & drive video be possible?
@porsche_dreamer carfax usually isnt available for pre-80s cars. At keast thats what I have been told
@porsche_dreamer I do not have a carfax but suspect it can be run. I believe it was refinished in the factory color.
Seller,
Beautiful and well kept!
Do you have a carfax and can you confirm this is factor paint? Thanks.
@n_l The fender looks fine. Can say what that gap is. I don't have any pictures of other side handy. Will try to get before end of auction.
@ninpo4me To better understand. Which picture are you referring to?
@Seanmo There is no bubbling that I am aware of. The only place of rust is on the door next to the window which I posted pictures which has not gotten worse over the last few years I had the car. Can easily be sanded and refinished or kept as is.
Any shot of what’s underneath that dash cap? thank you
Hi there. This would look great next (or on top of) my 77 red 308.
Can you tell me about any rust issues and bubbling?
Thanks
@szneiger - The area I was asking about can be seen in pictures 165 and 166 - that dark area to the left of the battery. Just curious if there's an issue with the fender on that side. I'd love to get a look at the batery tray itself (without the battery in there). Also, picture 220 is a little concerning from a rust perspective (is that the front edge of the passenger-side floor?) - what does the other side of the car look like at that location?
@n_l I apologize but I dint have any info on that what you say looks like a tear in metal. Also asked previous owner and he doesn't know. There is no rust. I can see if I have more pics of the undercarriage. What particular area are you looking for?
Can you provide some information about what looks like a tear in the sheet metal along the top of the inner fender next to the battery (or at least a closer picture)? Any chance we can get some more undercarriage pictures?
Bid in the amount of $1,000
@szneiger I just always look at the Vot # and what's in that. a 924 Porsche- manual trans- clean title and the miles listed. the Vot# should have the correct info of what's on the car- not in the disruption of the car below- just my two cents-thanks for the quick reply
@robmsales Thank for your inquiry. In the description I mentioned the odometer being replaced and that the true miles on the care is aprox 37-38k.
Hi szneiger
Just looking at the brake and clutch pads and they look worn or used a lot
The 924 is saying it has under 22 K on the car, why would these pads look that bad with so few miles
Thanks a lot, Rob
Nice car. The slicktop certainly makes this one stand out from the crowd. These are underappreciated currently but I think those days are number. GLWTS
Hello everyone, thanks for checking out my 924. There aren’t many of these early cars left! You seldom see clean sunroof-delete 924 that haven’t been totally rotted or turned into race cars. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask through this comment section or DM. Happy bidding.
