We are pleased to offer this collector-grade 1978 Porsche 924.  Presently a two-owner car and part of a rotating collection, this remarkable 1978 example has been kept in outstanding original condition with just over 8k miles shown on the odometer.  This 924 was specially configured by the original owner and was delivered new by Klinger Porsche/Audi in Lake Forest Illinois. Generally, the 924s were not as well preserved by their owners compared to the 911s or 928s of the same era, making examples in this condition extremely rare and difficult to find. Complete with its original factory break-in procedure sticker affixed to the windshield, this time capsule of a 924 was previously listed on PCARMARKET and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York accompanied by a collection of original books and accessories.

The Black (041) finish is described as being in excellent original condition, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  The undercarriage was also treated with an anti-corrosive coating by the original selling dealer when new.   A design originally developed by Porsche on behalf of VW/Audi, the 924 is characterized by its flip-up headlights and large glass rear hatch. The original 14” alloy wheels are factory finished with color-matched centers and are currently dressed in Cooper CS4 Touring tires.

The black leatherette interior is shown to have stood up very well against the test of time while retaining all of its original specifications.  This car was ordered with an interesting array of options including a leather steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, a power antenna, and radio delete (factory wiring in place).  All gauges and accessories are reported to be working properly down to the dashboard illumination and analog clock.

Representing Porsche’s original transaxle sports car, this 924 is equipped with a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine.  Featuring Bosch CIS fuel injection as well as a catalytic converter which was introduced for the U.S. market in mid-1977, this 924 is capable of sending 110 HP to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual gearbox.  The catalytic converter reduced the need for restrictive emissions equipment used in the earlier versions.  The timing belt and water pump are said to have been replaced at approximately 5,600 miles, and the seller indicates this 924 to be in strong running order.

This sale will include the original owner’s manual, service book, a set of keys, a special plaque with the original owner's name, an unused spare tire, and a toolkit.  An extremely rare opportunity for any discerning Porsche collector, this highly original, low-mileage 924 will prove to be a worthwhile investment for its next owner.

@Freemaha - thank you for the comment and your thoughts on the 924 - I agree with your assessment on the condition.

Two things worth mentioning to anyone who is considering bidding - putting the mileage aside - the early cars are extremely difficult to find in above average condition and also to really appreciate the condition of this 924 you have to have been around them for some time and to know how neglected and under appreciated most were for the majority of their life (or have spent time trying to buy one).

That is what makes this a special Porsche for those who know and can appreciate it.

The condition and originality of this car are second to none - even things like the front brake rotor dust covers and hood support rod plastic rest square are present.

With the above said our family has owned many 911 as well as multiple transaxle cars (one of every model) over the years - being well versed on Porsche's I can say with complete confidence that it will be extremely difficult to find anything comparable out there to this 924 - at any price.

The interest and bids are appreciated.

My first car was a black 1977 924 that was in horrific condition. It was the same color combination. Since then I have gone on to own a large number of Porsches including several transaxle cars. In fact currently I one two 944s. I know these cars inside in out. I have owned some of the best examples in existence. That said, this series 1 924 is probably the best example I have ever seen. Most of the 924s have been destroyed and of the ones left, they are typically in worse than poor condition. This example simple blows my mind. Anything under $20k is a solid deal. Don’t be afraid to pay up for this one.

@twallc4 - in both picture 197 picture 203 what you are seeing is the shadow made by the chassis seams as the pictures were taken with a flash - there are no cracks.

Hello seller, I’m seeing cracks in some kind of casing on photos 197 & 203. Can you tell me what they are on? Is it a plastic undercar panel or is it part of the engine casing, looks disturbing on such a low molar car. Would like to know exactly what those cracks are? Thanks. Do like the car.

WOW. Amazing car. Good Luck with auction.

  • PlaPan (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Paint meter readings, walk around video and additional under side pictures have been added to the listing.

  • PlaPan (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

Silver930 - thank you for the kind words, it is a very neat piece.

Swiftmotoring - paint is original and meter readings will be added to the gallery - there has been no recent work done to it as it has no issues or needs that I am aware of (I have inspected the timing belt, checked the ignition timing and looked over a few other items) - had an oil service and few minor things done before I bought it - I have driven the car a little over 100 miles since it came into my hands.

Will be happy to discuss in detail and also show the 924 to anyone with serious interest - feel free to contact me.

Great looking 924! Can you tell me if the paint is 100% original and provide paint depth readings? Do you have receipts for the recent work done in the 924? How many miles have you driven the car?
    Thank you.
