The 924 debuted at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show as Porsche’s first front-engine production car. It features a rear transaxle layout, a water-cooled 2.0-liter inline-four engine, and iconic styling cues of the 1970s. This 1978 example comes finished in Dolomite Grey Metallic over black upholstery with Pascha velour seatback inserts. Initially acquired by the seller's close relative from an authorized Porsche dealer in Oregon, this single-family-owned example is now being offered for auction at no reserve out of Wisconsin while showing approximately 115k miles on the odometer.

The Dolomite Grey Metallic exterior is said to have been professionally refinished in the late 1990s due to the failure of the original clear coat. A design originally developed by Porsche on behalf of VW/Audi, the 924 is characterized by its flip-up headlights and large glass rear hatch. The factory 14” alloy wheels come dressed in Michelin Defender tires from 2015/2017 and are said to have most of their original tread. The seller notes two minor rock chips in the windshield, a small rust spot near the passenger side rear quarter panel, and slight signs of road wear. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is appointed with Black partial leather and desirable Pascha velour upholstery. Equipment includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, roll-up windows, a heater, a Blaupunkt radio, and black carpeting with Porsche lettering. A carpeted dash-pad covers the dashboard, and the seller notes some signs of wear and minimal fade.

This 924 is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine featuring Bosch CIS fuel injection as well as a catalytic converter which was introduced for the U.S. market in mid-1977. It is capable of sending 110 HP to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed manual transaxle. The seller states that recommended services were completed as per the maintenance instructions throughout the early years, and a major service was recently completed. Accompanying documentation is provided in the gallery.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, an unused spare tire, and a spare rear reflector.

The seller would like you to know: “Thanks for your interest in this timepiece from Porsche history. This car fits the rare classic profile of having been in same-ownership-since-showroom-new. Mother purchased it literally off the showroom floor in 1978. She was 39 at the time and loved her 924. This offering is in an Estate now and needs a new caring home. Major maintenance refresh as of 02/2020.”

Our first Porsche was a '78 924 in Copper Metallic. We put 250K miles on that car. Florida needs AC though, and it is difficult to retrofit AC into these cars. We kept it going, though, as we now find and rescue 924S and 944 cars in central Florida. This is a nice one!

GLTL - Thanks for that bit of good news about source from Germany. Always knew someday, somewhere someone would reproduce/discover a trove of Pascha fabric ! These dashboards and center consoles were definitely weak points.

  • GLTL (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

Fabric, including Pascha and leatherette, carpet, and replacement dash covers are available from an outfit in Germany.

@steakshow924 - Sorry I wasn't trying to say you were misrepresenting - just wanted to make sure bidders were aware. These are super rare cars and lots of fun!

  • steakshow924 (seller) 8 months, 1 weekago

Yes, it is the Limited Edition; and yes, it has had the lower seat cushion changed out unfortunately some years ago. No record of when, but likely in the last 10 years. Probably "pleather" as the cloth checkerboard pattern had suffered sun-fade wear, and too many service techs sticking their knee into them reaching for something.
Air-Conditioning was never on this car, or reported to be.

@grillage The listing has been corrected, thank you.

This is a '78 Limited Edition. in 77 they made the Martini, in 79 the Sebring - this was the special 924 for 1978. See the last pic on the window sticker for the details of what it added but the coolest was the pasha seats. These look to have had the seat bottoms replaced with leather or vinyl but the backs are there.

Also, the listing says it has AC - it does not appear to. I had one of these for a bit a few years back and mine had dealer installed "dpd" brand air conditioning added. If this had factory AC it would be missing the voltmeter in the center cluster

    Good luck with the auction!
