Now up for auction is this outstanding 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo finished in Paint to Sample Diamond Sahara Metallic over a black leather interior with factory Sport Seats.  Originally purchased through Trans World Motors in Goleta, California as one of only 461 U.S. examples produced for the model year, this 930 was eventually sold to its long-term owner in 1981 who would keep the car in their private collection over the next 38 years while only adding 4k miles.  Reported to have been meticulously looked after its entire life with a full engine rebuild carried out in 2013 at a cost of over $26k, this Turbo is now being offered in superb overall condition by its seller in New York with just over 25k miles showing on the odometer.

This 930 is factory finished in the rare Paint to Sample color of Diamond Sahara Metallic.  The paint is said to be in excellent overall condition, reflecting a life of diligent care.  See the photo gallery for a collection of detailed images and paint meter readings. Noteworthy features on this Turbo include its wide fenders, front spoiler, fog lights, Tea Tray rear decklid, and original Fuchs wheels dressed in Pirelli P-Zero tires.

The black leather interior has been preserved in impeccable original condition.  Factory features include highly desirable Sport Seats, an electric sunroof, a black headliner, a power-operated exterior mirror (right), and equipment for California.  A 930 SE steering wheel has been installed and the original wheel is included in the sale. The factory radio remains in-place and all gauges and accessories are said to be working properly.

This example retains its original 3.3 L turbocharged flat-six engine which is paired with a numbers-matching 4-speed manual transmission.  In 2013, the engine received a complete rebuild following a seized camshaft lobe.  All work was carried out by Schneider Autohaus of Santa Barbara, CA, who had been performing all maintenance on the car up until that point. A rebuilt turbocharger was also installed along with a new oil cooler at that time.  All documentation is included, the cost totaling over $26k. In recent Porsche collector ownership, another $6,000 was spent to install an original 930 European exhaust system (original heater boxes are included), oil lines, a valve adjustment and fluid service.  A new battery was also recently installed.

The 930 is accompanied by its original window sticker, service records from new, original books, tools, jack, spare tire, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.  An icon of Porsche’s history, this exceptional Paint to Sample 930 makes the perfect addition to any world-class collection.

Hi all, just so all is clear here: as PCar commented earlier, this was never supposed to be a no-reserve auction, they acknowledged their mistake.
As far as a high bidder - We own this car!!!! It is not consigned in any way. It was taken on trade a year ago and then sold to another client of ours since then. The 930 was then put into a multicar trade deal as my long-time friend and client was changing around some cars in his collection. So we decided to try PCar and offer this to Porsche enthusiasts. It appears the person who won this car on BaT a year and half ago seems to want it back. I can tell you from 31 years in the business this is not uncommon for one my clients to wake up again and buy back a car they shouldn't have sold. Such is life.

ALupton is right!!! This car was bought by ODK late last year. Did ODK sell it and wants to buy it back? Somebody better jump in here and do some explaining to help keep up the credibility here.

  • ALupton 3 years, 4 monthsago

    Something fishy here .
    First no- reserve becomes reserve.
Now ODK is driving up the bids..

Same ODK who purchased the car here on BAT and shipped car to NY.

So seller is bidding on own car? That’s not cool

@PCARMARKET thank you for clarifying to the group.

  • PCARMARKET 3 years, 4 monthsago

@Abuong01 folks this is a reserve auction. We did find that it launched as a no reserve auction which was an error and has been corrected. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Also please note, we include No-Reserve in the title when an auction is No-Reserve.

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@pierrenyc interesting. Great looking car all the same.

  • pierrenyc (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@Abuong01 Exactly...especially since this vehicle has been for sale at AutoSportDesigns since August 24th...Obviously Tom P. Is eager to sell it ...And the price he’s been asking has been advertised for the past four months on his website (now removed since it is for sale on PCAR).

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@Eggzackly Makes no sense for 4 days to pass before someone sees it listed as no-reserve. Hopefully Pcar folks will shed some light.

  • Eggzackly (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

@pierrenyc I spoke to the seller today. I sat in this car a week ago in their showroom. I'm not sure but I think the no reserve listing was an accident.

  • pierrenyc (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

This auction was a "No reserve" this morning and now showing "Reserve". Is this legal? Has anyone been notified?

@TangerineT Hi. Everything is working properly and the dash leather is original. I am not sure what you mean about the grain? You can tell it is original spec, just look at the stitching.

    Best,

    Tom P.

  • TangerineT (registered bidder) 3 years, 4 monthsago

Has the dash been re-covered? The graining looks off to me.

Is everything currently sorted and working on the car, electrics, sunroof, AC, etc.?
