Up for auction at no-reserve is this European-market 1979 Porsche 911SC Targa finished in Black Metallic over a black interior. Currently said to be in running and driving order, this Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California accompanied by a clean title. Thos SC features upgraded Carrera chain tensioners, an MSD ignition, SSI exhaust manifolds, a Dansk sport muffler, and other popular perofrmacne modicaitions. The perfect basis for a restoration project or custom build, this 911SC recently underwent a thorough inspection by a Porsche specialist who included a breakdown of all items that need to be addressed to bring the car up to excellent mechanical condition. This car is not available to retail bidders in California, bidders must have a valid CA. dealer's licesnce or an out of state address.
This SC is said to have been refinished in Black Metallic over 15 years ago. The exterior exhibits some cosmetic imperfections, and the front bonnet is currently misaligned and spray-painted matte black. This example features European bumperettes, side marker lights, and replica 17” Cup Design wheels that are currently dressed in a mixed set of tires.
Inside, the black interior is said to remain in fair condition. An aftermarket stereo and steering wheel have been installed and all gauges and accessories are working properly aside from the heat and air conditioning.
This 911SC carries a European-spec air-cooled 3.0 L flat-six engine that sends 180 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine has been upgraded with Carrera chain tensioners, Turbo lower valve covers, SSI exhaust manifolds, an MSD ignition system, and a Dansk sport muffler. Other modifications include Koni shocks and stainless steel brake lines. The car is said to run and drive at this time, and the findings from a recent inspection are included in the photo gallery along with compression test results.
Offered with a clean title and a list of outstanding service items, this 911SC is just waiting to be restored or transformed by its next owner.

@Joesnovak Correct, mileage is TMU. I have not pulled the speedometer, but assume it is not original since it is in MPH (not KM). No service book with the car.
@MSQ sir the seller is correct, no idea what a top end costs, it changes by what a top end can be and the region being done
I. Theory top end would be remove heads and have them done by a shop and do glides springs valves etc
Then I replace rings, see if cylinders are not out of round, carbon build on pistons, on and on...clutch so a top end to some is just a valve job.....

@JMRIEGEL I have been driving it regularly for the past few months without issue.
Aside from the issues mentioned, any issues with this as a weekend driver? It clearly needs a rebuild at some point, just trying to get a sense of urgency. Any issues driving it around town here and there, obviously not a cross-country road trip.
@MSQ Every engine or transaxle rebuild is different. The price range is massive and depends on a number of different factors. As other bidders have suggested, that is really a better question for the person that would be doing the work rather than me or the bidder community.

Trying to figure out - factoring in those two items (plus things like suspension) what a reasonable bid would be relative to final value if these things are done.
Seller seems like he/she is being transparent which is great.
I've found nearly all the Q&A on this auction very helpful with transparency from the seller. We all know that you won't find a Porsche anywhere in any condition that is just being given away for a few thousand, and just about any used Porsche should be purchased with a budget that allows for a few to several thousand dollars needed in additional investment. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It means these cars maintain value while we continue to enjoy them. Bidders looking for the same "fun factor" as a 911, but at a lower price point should perhaps look for a Boxster or Cayman which are great bargains still.
We all expect this car will probably need $10-20k invested to get it running right, and certainly more could be spent depending on what your personal vision is of what this car could be. So one suggestion is to find a 1979 SC online that is close to your vision and if you can and talk to your specialist (if you aren't already one) about what it will cost to turn this into that, and you should be able to then place knowledgeable bids. I've yet to see a no-reaerve Porsche auction where nobody noticed a super low price and somebody got it for a huge savings. There's just so much enthusiasm and interest in these cars. (again, this is good)
My guess is that this car will sell somewhere close to whatever that price point is that will result in purchase and investment to come out at the market rate for a sorted grey market '79 SC. There are dealers that are watching this and every other Porsche auction, don't forget.
I'm probably like many of the bidders here. I'm interested if it was within my budget given the calculous above, but mostly I learn something with every one of these auctions when there is good Q&A and thus become a better consumer, enthusiast and bidder.

I have confirmed based on serial numbers that the engine is a 1979 Euro spec 3.0 and that the transmission is a 1979, appropriate for this car. I of course cannot definitively say that they are original to this car, but it appears that they are.
You do not need a COA seller
Check the books that came with the car or reference it to a ton of after

@Joesnovak Carrera chain tensioners and turbo valve covers are each clearly shown in the photos if you know what you’re looking for.
@Joesnovak The engine & serial #s are pictured and transcribed, below. I do not have a COA for this car, but bidders should do their own research concerning “matching numbers.”
Not sure what you mean about the front end being “happy” or the suspension being “shot.” There are a couple of suspension items recommended for repair, but I would not describe the suspension in that way overall. Neither did the mechanic performing the inspection.
Valve covers have not been removed to check head studs, but a top end reseal is recommended and would address this.
@Joesnovak The previous owner of 20 years was in MN. I am told it was stored indoors and not driven in salt/snow, but bidders should make their own judgements based on the numerous photos.
The compression #’s are listed on both the printout and handwritten pages of the inspection.
You are correct that because it is a Euro model, this car lacks the OEM smog equipment of a CA delivery 1979 and would therefore require modification to pass smog in CA.

You could be right about reserve auctions get more money, it keeps interest high because many of these cars do not sell. A bidders hate reserves
@GillesB that ridiculous... if sellers wanted to "give the best deal possible" they'd just give the car away. The actual purpose is to sell it by a known date for whatever the market will bear. Also, it's common knowledge that 'No Reserve' auctions attract more interest from the get-go, and as a result many times have a higher end price than if they'd been listed with a reserve. Bidder can be come emotional involved since it's not a matter of if, but who, the car will exchange hands. Sellers often come out much better (not always) with a No Reserve auction. It's just a calculated game of chance they're willing to play; not that they're looking to give someone a good deal.

@hypwr65 it is a soft close. If a bid is placed within the last 2 minutes of the auction the clock is reset to 2 minutes 15 seconds and continues that way until no more bids are submitted.

This car has great potential. Put a few bucks into it and enjoy it as is or invest some serious money into it and make it something special. Either way we both know that it will go well above where it is now, so not quite sure why you carr if I pushed the price a bit closer in that direction.

Rising the auction by $5K in one shot just does not help this principal. Who ever who really wants the car usually bid higher at the last minute.

Seller, thank you for your prompt answers. Can you tell me more about the 3rd gear. As per video, it looks like it is still fonctioning more or less correctly ? But need some work to adjust it ?? Not very clear on that as I am not a mecanic

@r3drov3r No problem with the questions. Apologies if it was somehow unclear, but the items on the inspection report have NOT been addressed. Following your numbering though:
1) The drive axles operate properly, but they need new boots and grease. This has not been addressed.
2 & 3) No attempt was made to clean the underside of the car, so evidence of oil leaks is quite clear in the photos. As mentioned previously, the car does occasionally drop a small amount onto the exhaust while driving and it does leave a few drops on the garage floor overnight.
4) The transmission does shift into 3rd gear, as shown in the video, and does not "crunch." It does sometimes resist going into that gear at all and needs to be double clutched.
5) There is one wheel bearing (not multiple) that the inspection indicates as loose. I tightened it and there is no perceptible play in it. It may still need to be replaced at some point, but I feel safe driving it.
I will get some more photos of the Targa bar and top of the windshield later today.
Thank you for the pics of the targa top. With the top off, it would be nice to see the sections of the roof where the top would sit, to see the condition of that union (to assess possible leaks or wind noise).
Also, apologies if I missed it, but the report notes a couple of things and I'm wondering if they have since been addressed. (it's tough to read)
1. rebuild both drive axles
2. valve covers leaking
3. major engine reseal, all oil hoses leaking
4. something about the 3rd gear syncro and 3rd gear trans rebuild - is that causing a "crunch" when shifting into 3rd or not able to shift in at all?
5. Wheel bearings loose (which means they are shot and not safe to drive)

@GillesB I have receipts for the tire purchases in 2006 (front) and 2008 (rear). I have attached some additional photos.
Fronts: 205/50/17 Dunlop SP Sport. No cracking, damage, or other signs of dry rot. Tread depth is approximately 4/32".
Rear: 255/40/17 Dunlop Direzza DZ101. No cracking, damage, or other signs of dry rot. Tread depth is approximately 7/32".
I do not show any records for brake work, but the front and rear pads each have over 50% pad depth remaining and the rotors are in good condition. The attached inspection report recommends a brake fluid flush because the fluid is dirty, but does not recommend any other brake maintenance.

@DrPorsche911 In addition to the underside photos in the original post, I have taken numerous photos of the door jambs and front trunk area that will be posted shortly. There is some very typical surface rust around the battery that someone might want to clean up, but it is not soft, rotted, or rusting through. As you can see in the photos, there is no real evidence of rust elsewhere on the car. Note that 911s after 1976 were galvanized and less susceptible to rust issues than the earlier cars (though not immune). The attached shop estimate noted the surface rust by the battery, but they did not recommend any repairs.
The driving video should also be posted shortly and, in addition to the cold start video, will help to illustrate the running condition of the car. This car was in regular use and stored indoors by the previous owner of 20 years. After acquiring the car a few months ago, I have put several hundred miles on it. The car drives, accelerates, turns, and brakes as it should. It pulls hard and is a blast to drive. It needs a lot of TLC to be great and I want to be fully transparent about that, but it is ready to enjoy now. Sorry, I meant we have no history *prior* to 2001. The records shown are for work done since 2001.
Our dealership has owned the car for only a few months. I cannot represent the mileage as true because I have no history on the car back to 2001 (including import, since it is a Euro Market car).
The previous owner had the car since 2001 and the sporadic records in the photo cover the period of 2001-2020. Most of the records are parts receipts and do not show mileage, though there is one record showing 53k miles back in 2008.
@GillesB The speedometer is in the correct placement. It is turned at an angle so that the driver can see highway speeds with the aftermarket steering wheel (it is smaller in diameter than the factory one). You can simply turn it upright if you prefer it that way.
Also the speedometer is actually wrongly placed......can you explain that ? Tks

The driver’s seat being in such poor condition, I doubt the odometer hasn’t been rolled up. Can you certify that this car is a real 88K miles + car ?

@jg_wnc The comments are definitely difficult to read, but here is my best shot at interpreting and adding some additional notes/color, beginning with the most important items:
- They recommend a top end reseal of the engine and note oil leaks from some of the hoses. It leaves a few drops on the garage floor when parked, and drips a small amount onto the exhaust while running and driving.
- They recommend a transaxle rebuild in order to fix the 3rd gear synchro
- Shifter bushings are bad, but usable
- Some surface rust, but no recommended repairs. The paint is in rough shape throughout and the car would need a full respray to look right
- The Targa top and headliner are in pretty good shape, but the front does not seal properly. It secures in place, but there is considerable wind noise.
- The driver door catch strap is broken
- Gas door spring is broken
- Left license plate light is inop
- Right fog light broken (I replaced w/a new lense since, shown in photos)
- FR wheel bearing loose
- Windshield washers inop
- Brake fluid needs to be flushed
- Blower fan inop
- Wire to oil press switch broken
- Hood struts do not hold
- Hand brake inop
- Drive axle boots torn and need grease (recommends rebuild)

@nysaabtech The car has a bad third gear synchro that requires double clutching into that gear. Otherwise, there is no whine and the transmission shifts as it should.

Wow. Needs a little TLC but might be a good project. Euro's are nice. Owned an 1982 Euro SC Targa and it was a blast. This one would work for a DIY 'er but might be a bit much at a shop. Interested to see where this one ends up. GLWS

@TheGerman Unfortunately, that’s a really difficult question to answer. Different buyers will want to do things differently, so cost will vary. The inspection merely lists things that need to be addressed mechanically and does estimate prices for some of those.
It's very hard for me to read the handwritten list. So, I beg you: what did the expert say how many money you must invest for this car that it reaches the condition of "2" in a scale of 1 for "excellent" up to 5 for "absolutly poore" . Thx
