Up for auction is this 1979 Porsche 928 finished in Red over a Cork leather interior.  Reported to have been sold new in California, this 928 had been parked in storage since the early 1990s before it was acquired from the original owner’s estate in 2016. It has since been thoroughly refurbished including a full repaint of the exterior, reupholstered seats, new carpeting, an overhaul of the brakes, and a recent timing belt and water pump replacement.  Featuring a desirable 5-speed manual transaxle connected to a 4.5L V8 engine, this 928 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts while showing just over 31k miles on the odometer.

Since 2016, this 928 has been refinished in the current shade of Red and fitted with new rubber seals for the windows, bumpers, and rear hatch.  Some rust repair was carried out on the passenger door and the original color of the car is noted to have been Oak Green Metallic (265).  A three-piece 928S-style spoiler has been added to the rear and the factory 16″ Phone Dial wheels have been professionally powdercoated and dressed in Pirelli P-Zero tires.  Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, this 928 features a Cork leather interior with power windows, mirrors, air conditioning, and an original Blaupunkt radio.  There was no sunroof equipped from the factory.  The cabin has been refurbished with new carpeting and a reupholstered leather dashboard. The front seats were also rebuilt with new foam padding and tan leather upholstery.  Other items addressed include wiring repairs and the replacements of various bulbs and fuses.  A tilting binnacle houses factory instrumentation including a 170-MPH speedometer, a 7k-RPM tachometer, and gauges for battery voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The 6-digit odometer shows just over 31k miles, of which approximately 750 were added under the current ownership.  The radio cassette function is currently inoperable, however, the seller reports all other gauges and accessories to be working properly.

This first-generation 928 is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.5L V8 engine that was factory-rated at 230 HP and 253 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a desirable 5-speed manual transaxle.  A 2019 service is said to have included new brake pads, rotors, lines, and a master cylinder as well as an oil change.  Additional work completed under current ownership includes new spark plugs, wires, belts, a new alternator, and a battery.  The timing belt and water pump are also said to have been replaced within the last three months.

This 928 will be accompanied by a spare tire, maintenance records, a service booklet, the original owner’s manual, toolkit, spare tire, air pump, and a clean Massachusetts title.  Now is your chance to own one of the most iconic vintage grand touring cars of all time with a proper 5-speed manual gearbox, do not miss out.

@evank96 No problem. Having tires installed two years after manufacture isn't too bad. Last year I bought a set of "new" winter tires from a Porsche dealer and later found out they were 5 years old. They went back to the dealer. Lesson learned - now I always check. Very nice looking 928 by the way - love the looks of these.

@NHPorscheguy thank you for the information on where to find that these tires were purchased in 2018 from Herb Chambers Porsche so that’s when they were put on the car

  • NHPorscheguy (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@evank96 If you zoom in on one of the tire pictures you can see that at least one of the tires was manufactured in the 19th week of 2016, so they are over 5 years old. Getting a little long in the tooth.......
