Finished in Petrol Blue Metallic over a Cork vinyl and Pascha velour interior, this 1979 Porsche 928 was sold new in Munich, Germany by MAHAG Sportwagen-Zentrum Munchen. It came equipped with a 5-speed manual transaxle paired with its 4.5-liter V8 engine. The car was imported to the United States in December of 1984 and acquired from its previous owner in 2017 with extensive reconditioning carried out since including a full repaint, new seat covers, carpeting, brakes, suspension parts, and a full engine rebuild. This European-market 928 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Oklahoma.

This 928 was ordered from the factory in Petrol Blue Metallic and was completely refinished in 2019 using high-quality PPG paint. Equipment includes European-spec side markers, yellow-tinted fog lights, a rear window wiper, and factory 16” Phone Dial wheels dressed in new Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires. The factory-optional protective side moldings have been removed and the seller notes a small paint blemish on the roof and one very minor ding on the left front fender, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is trimmed in a stunning combination of Cork vinyl with contrasting black/beige Pascha velour inserts. Equipment includes an electric antenna, tinted glass, air conditioning, power accessories, and a factory Porsche radio. The carpeting and seat covers were replaced under current ownership using period-correct colors and fabric. The air conditioning system has been refreshed with new O-rings, a new dryer, and an updated compressor. A U.S. market odometer was installed upon the car’s importation and repaired under current ownership including the installation of a European KPH dial. Based on a collection of records, the seller estimates the car’s true mileage at approximately 126k.

A naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 engine sends power to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. The current owner commissioned a full rebuild of the engine including new rod bearings, piston rings, seals, gaskets, belts, hoses, ignition components, wiring harness, a water pump, heater valve, and motor mounts. The engine work was performed by the owner and the heads were fully rebuilt by a machine shop. The steering rack was rebuilt, and the suspension was overhauled with new ball joints, tie rods, a wheel alignment, and ride height adjustment. New brake pads, rotors, and lines have also been installed and the front wheel bearings have been repacked and sealed. The seller adds that the clutch and gearbox synchronizers were replaced under prior ownership.

This sale will include extensive service records, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a clean title, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity showing numbers matching engine and transmission.

@1991928gt Stock OEM 16” phone dials.

Like your username. I have a 91 Euro GT that is supercharged.

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    are those OEM/stock 15'' or 16'' tele/phonedial wheels?

  • 928Pcar (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@zollerm Yes. I was thinking that perhaps it had 125k km instead of miles because of the great condition of the car when I got it and what odometer gear was in there. The fact that it is clicking up miles instead of km shows they did the conversion correctly when they converted from km to miles when you look at the km on the importation documents and the reported miles on the first title.

The gentleman that I bought it from had it for 32 years and bought it from the importer. He said he was the 3rd owner if you don’t include the importer middleman.

  • zollerm (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    Interesting story. Thanks.

  • 928Pcar (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@zollerm Very good question. When I got the car it had a mph speedometer face. The gear had failed as they do so I replaced it. Counting the number of teeth on the car showed it was a km ROW gear so I replaced with the same and installed the model year correct kph face. When I drove the car and the odometer is clocking miles and not km. So, the face is kph but the odometer is in miles. It was not uncommon in the federalization process for them to just swap faces but not in this case. So, the 125k miles is correct.

  • zollerm (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Also, speedo says 124,xxx KM, while ad says 124,xxx Miles. Which is correct? thanks

  • 928Pcar (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@zollerm The factory 229HP. It feels like so much more with how nimble the car is.

  • 928Pcar (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@IslaTurbine Great question and correct for not being on a number of ‘78’s including mine. This car didn’t have it and I didn’t install one as it always looked like a hack add on and I wanted to see how it idled without it. I really don’t see the need when the AC is running.

  • 928Pcar (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@SteveinVT The sound is great. Low rumble and you really don’t hear it until you get on the gas. Even then it’s not too loud at all and no droning. I’m told that it sounds awesome outside of the car.

  • allmack (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    Marone a mi - what a beauty!

  • IslaTurbine (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    What a beauty.

Out of curiosity, how come this car doesn’t have an AC idle valve attached to the strut tower brace? I thought the only OB’s that didn’t have one were some of the early-build 78’s.

  • Rob-Edwards 1 year, 6 monthsago

Petrol blue over Cork/B&W Pascha (one of the all-time best 928 color combinations!), no sunroof 5-speed, comprehensive driveline refresh, from a long time, well-known 928'er in the community- as they say, it doesn't get any better than this. Beautiful restoration!

  • wazoomann 1 year, 6 monthsago

  • SteveinVT 1 year, 6 monthsago

Wow- beautiful car that has been carefully restored. I saw the Magna-flow exhaust - curious re the sound and the volume?

  • linderpat 1 year, 6 monthsago

stunning car and great owner. No detail left undone. I envy whoever gets this gem! GLWA!

  • 928Pcar (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    Hello All.
I'm the owner of this beautiful ride and I'm here to answer any questions.

I purchased this car over 5 years ago to be my early 928 "keeper". Just a year after that I was offered one of the first 12 preproduction 928's that is also Petrol Blue so that car has become my new early 928 "keeper". That is why I'm letting this one go. That and the fact that I have three other 928's besides this one.

With the initial thought of having this car being long term ownership I dug in deep to make the car as nice as possible. It has been thoroughly gone through and everything works as it is supposed to. It drives out beautifully!

The engine has gone through the break-in process and the break-in oil has been changed with conventional oil. I plan on to continue to drive the car this week to get more miles on it. The engine is running strong and I will get cold start and driving videos out later this week. Please ask questions and I will do everything I can to get them answered.
    Thanks!
