This 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo is one of 1,200 U.S. market examples produced in 1979 and marks the last year in which a Turbo was offered in the United States until 1986. This numbers-matching 930 is accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and has received over $30k worth of recent servicing. Sporting the quintessential air-cooled 911 Turbo appearance, this  Guards Red 1979 example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois showing approximately 48k miles on the odometer.

This 911 Turbo comes finished in Guards Red (G8) and features wide fenders protected by black stone guard decals on the rear. The Turbo model equips a Tea Tray rear spoiler and dual exhaust outlets. It rides on factory 16” Fuchs wheels dressed in new Firestone 500 tires. The car is said to have been recently detailed and paint meter readings suggest some areas of the body may have been previously refinished, additional images are provided in the gallery.

The black leather interior is appointed with optional Sport Seats from the factory along with climate control, a black headliner, an electric sunroof, and an electric exterior mirror for the passenger side. The seller reports all gauges and accessories to be working properly.

The turbocharged and intercooled 3.3-liter flat-six engine can produce as much as 265 HP and 291 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission and an optional limited-slip differential. A recent service exceeding $30k was performed including a European-style exhaust installation, an engine-out service, a valve adjustment, gearbox reseal, clutch adjustment, new platinum spark plugs, an oil change, and brake fluid flush. 

This sale will include a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a clean title.

    @Perfpow While some of your commentary is accurate regarding the history of the mandated 85mph speedometer regulation it's well documented that the end of the '79 930 production run had the 85mph speedometers as well as other small changes like the flush mounted headlight washer nozzles. From what I have seen these changes happened around VIN 818. Certainly no one can fault replacing the silly 85mph unit with something more reflective of the 930's performance. If that's the case here it would be valuable to know if the current speedo reflects the true mileage.

    @Deep_Six That bill was passed in September 1979 (On Sept. 1, 1979, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration added a provision into a regulation focusing on speedometer accuracy to place an emphasis on the 55-mph mark, and for a maximum speed reading of 85 mph. Though the 85-mph mandate only lasted until the first months of President Ronald Reagan’s first term in the White House in 1981, most manufacturers kept the reading at the bottom right of their speedometers until the vehicles were redesigned years later) and did not affect the 1978-1979 Turbos but they did affect the 1980 and 1981 911 SC. By coincidence, the production date of this car was the month that the bill was passed. But it was not until the 1980 model year that it took affect.

    @Perfpow Very nice looking and well sorted 930. Based on the VIN and production date would this example have been originally fit with an 85MPH speedometer? If so, any documentation on when the speedo was swapped for the current 150MPH unit?

    @delanodp if you’re looking closely, you can see this car has had very little exposure to moisture, salt or anything that would cause corrosion. Some nuts and bolts on the transmission and on the exhaust in particular will get rusty just from rain or car washes. The exhaust hardware was replaced during the service, so it is in excellent condition. Some nuts and bolts and the drain plug on the transmission show rust. That’s because everything is so clean and dry and if it’s unplated and not stainless, it will rust. I think it’s fair to say this car is rust-free.

    Was the car stored in a damp environment or driven in wet / snow? There is some evidence of surface corrosion that would indicate that. Thanks - beautiful car!

    @xrdv8 Hi @xrdv8 Leakage was 2-3% across the board. Heads, pistons and cylinders were NOT removed. It came in running well and finished up running even better, with a new European-style exhaust and oil lines to go along with a major service and valve adjustment. Oil leaks were repaired. Fluids were changed. Belts replaced. Tires installed. The bottom was CO2 blasted to show the rust free undamaged floorpan.

    Were there any leakdown/compression tests done on the motor? I see a lot of gaskets and plumbing in the receipt but no valve/rings done.

    @longboarder Hi @longboarder These early (1978-79) Turbos didn’t come with catalytic converters. The 1986 model year was the first time the 930 got a catalytic converter. It’s a pretty easy conversion for California since the Euro exhaust became the US exhaust in 1986 with the only difference being the muffler. The Euro car had a larger muffler and the US car had a small muffler tucked under the new catalytic converter, which bolted right to the turbine housing. These cars did have the dreaded thermal reactors, which preceded catalytic converters. They retained a lot of heat under the heads and people quickly realized they needed to be replaced with the entire European exhaust system or at least with 3-into-1 ‘thermal reactor replacement pipes.’

    @Long3rd Thanks for your interest. The paint work on the car is excellent and matches extremely well making it very difficult to tell what is not original paint. I will take paint meter readings over the weekend and keep you posted. When the work was completed on the car, I wanted to take it for a driving video but the weather here turned and we have snow and salt on the roads now. I can happily do a cold start video though, so you can hear the engine run.

    Seller, can you add some history please? The listing says "some areas of the body may have been previously refinished". Seems from the pics it's had a full re-spray. Further, is there documentation for the $30K in recent work? Lastly, I know it's Illinois and I know it's winter (very winter), but any sort of cold start / driving video would help. Beautiful 930.
