Available for auction is this 1979 Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet finished in Black over a black vinyl interior. One of the most recognizable vehicles on the road, this 1979 Beetle is accompanied by its original window sticker and features an air-cooled 1600cc engine with electronic fuel injection.  A full service was completed in preparation for sale including new front brake hoses, wheel cylinders, oil and filter changes, an engine tune-up, and tire balancing.  This 1979 Beetle is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio showing under 8k miles on the odometer.

This Beetle comes finished in Black with a black convertible soft top. The seller describes the finish to be in fair condition, showing a few dings and scratches as well as some light rust on the fenders. The chrome bumpers and brightwork are said to be in good condition as well as the running boards and rubber seals. Detailed images are provided in the gallery. This Beetle rides on a set of 4.5"x15″ steel wheels dressed in older Federal tires.

The black vinyl interior features woodgrain dash applique, a quartz crystal clock, an electrically heated rear window, adjustable front bucket seats, dual padded sun visors, a leatherette-covered sport steering wheel, and a two-stage fresh air blower. A  radio knob is missing and the seller notes the headliner has begun to separate from the top and is most noticeable when the top is down. The 5-digit odometer reads under 8k miles, which is reported as the car's true mileage supported by records and documentation.

Power comes from an air-cooled 1600cc flat-four engine producing up to 48 HP stock. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual transmission. Mechanical features include electronic fuel injection, four-wheel independent suspension, and rack and pinion steering. A service was recently completed using all OEM parts which included an oil and filter change, replacement of the license plate bulb, front brake hoses, front-wheel cylinders, tire balancing, and an engine tune-up. A corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery.

This sale will include records, the original window sticker, and a clean title. The Volkswagen Beetle is beloved by collectors, enthusiasts, and onlookers alike. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this well-preserved 1979 example.

This is a super low mileage, original VW Beetle. We have presented it as we received it. A little cleaning up and this could be spectacular. Not many around like this and when they become available they sell for up to $50,000 for the lowest mileage samples. Good luck with your bidding, we hope to sell the car today!!

@Fordgt Your comment is very similar to the comment below. As mentioned we do see some sign of rust on the pans and try to document them as clearly as possible.

  • CCCltd (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@Huskatten There is some surface rust documented on the underside of the fenders and on the floorpans but nothing remotely close to something that needs to be patched. We did not want to cover up any of the car given the documented history. Regarding storage, I cannot say for certain but the previous owner mentioned to me that it was under a cover in her garage for quite some time. Beyond that I cannot say for certain.

I like this VW and may bid on it if the price remains reasonable but am concerned about the disconnect between the low miles and level of oxidation. Can the seller please provide an explanation?

  • Huskatten (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Hmm, does have som rust under, on fenders, rustspots innside doors and engine bay. This will need some work. Has this been stored outside for some time?

@Coachmule The photos will be uploaded shortly. We have had the car stored in a heated garage and have not check it in the rain. The stitching has separated at the seam on the inner side. It is only visible when the top is down.

Very nice example. The converible top goes further down (about 6 inches) for better rear view visibility. All you have to do is push out the extra fold. There should be clips on driver and passenger sides to lock the top down in place (unless they were eliminated in the newer models). ?

This is John with CentralClassicCars.com. We have a 1979 Beetle with a very detailed history of ownership including a hand written letter by the previous ownership explaining the story of the car sense it was new. If anyone has any questions please let me know.
