Introduced in 1981, the Ferrari 308 GTBi featured new fuel injection and an electronic ignition system resulting in increased performance and efficiency. A total of 494 GTBi models were produced before being succeeded by the 308 Quattrovalvole two years later. This 1981 example is finished in Nero over a matching leather interior and shows just over 2,400 original miles on the odometer. This iconic Ferrari is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Missouri with paper records and service history from 1987 to current, and most importantly odometer readings from Colorado inspection receipts dating from 1989-2010.

The Pininfarina-designed bodywork is characterized by louvers, air intakes, quad tailpipes, and a vented engine cover framed by distinctive “flying buttress” pillars. This GTBi is finished in Nero and the seller notes some panels were previously repainted to address age-related wear. A few small dings are noted on the roof as well as various rock chips and some small imperfections throughout the body. Detailed images are provided in the gallery. The car rides on factory 14” wheels dressed in Michelin MXV classic car tires. The seller notes an optional QV-style spoiler is included as well.

The interior is upholstered in black leather with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. The center console houses accessory switches along with a coolant temperature gauge, a clock, and a gated shifter assembly. The seller notes that a factory-style radio-delete has been installed. The seller also reports the headliner is original and notes speaker grilles were added under previous ownership. All gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional.

A transverse mid-mounted 2.9L quad-cam V8 equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and Marelli DigiPlex ignition sends up to 214 HP and 179 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller states a major service was completed in 2014 at 1,328 miles including a new water pump, thermostat, valve adjustments, suspension bushings, coolant hoses, and an R134a conversion for the A/C system. In 2018, all systems were checked, the battery, tires, and belts were replaced, and the car was detailed. More recently in 2023, all systems were checked, new bonnet foam seals were installed, and the wheels were professionally refinished. The seller adds that paper records are available showing service history, mileage, and state inspections dating back to 1987.

This sale will include service records, a spare tire, a jack, a battery charger, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “I love the wonderful and iconic hand-built Enzo era Ferrari 308 inspired by the best of Ferrari classic racing passion and 1970s 1980s style with the beginnings of the 288 GTO and F40 at your fingertips while driving public streets and spirited country roads yet suitable for date night dining and everyday enjoyment with ease of maintenance. Starts and runs/drives great, has a battery tender on board and barely leaves a drop of oil. The suspension feels smooth over bumps or even RR tracks, the steering is tight and the Italian V8 sounds so good there is no need for any other music. This is easily the most friendly classic Ferrari to own.”

    @GillesB I agree!

There is soo much more to appreciate about this wonderful Berlinetta so I am here to answer all questions.

We discovered a set of black floor matts with the prancing horse and Ferrari in white that I will include for the winner to protect the originals.

With such low miles, why were "the wheels were professionally refinished" in 2023? Were they painted or powdered? Were they stripped to bare magnesium before recoating? If so, where they re-anondized with Dow 7 before paint?

"Using the common rule of cambelt replacement every 30K miles or 8 years, the service is just now coming due on time and obviously not miles."

You're either brand new to Ferrari or this statement is a farce. No one who knows these cars refers to a "common rule" of an 8-year belt change interval (let alone 9 which this car is at in 2023). The Ferrari TSB #1215 issued on 5/24/04 states that for V8 motors the belt change interval is 30K or 3 years, some owners let that go to 5 years. It's not the belts, it's the bearings that are the primary cause of concern.

2400 miles……it s hard to beleive that anyone who owns such a sleek Ferrari - best design ever - …..would not drive it. My dream car just out of the showroom.

@jbauto Best to see the records and it is rare that any DMV would provide this info to anyone over the phone or otherwise.
Still no records available on service 1980-87 it appears. Regardless of mileage, there are factory service intervals to be met

@Kelvinsvt Regarding paint meter readings, Yes.

    Worth mentioning tho,
This is one of the hand built Enzo era Ferraris which had the Glidden Salchi laquer finish before Ferrari switched to PPG due to checking and blistering over time.

Most including this one have had panels refinished in PPG as needed.

In pic 43 you can zoom in on the flip up headlight bezel which is original factory paint left as evidence of this history.

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago

@Kelvinsvt No need for engine out on this one, The Ferrari 308 is engineered for the cambelt service to be performed with simple access through the right rear wheel house.

This service was completed by Alex Traverso Ferrari Service Center in Scottsdale on 9/4/14

Using the common rule of cambelt replacement every 30K miles or 8 years, the service is just now coming due on time and obviously not miles.

We can provide borescope pics showing the belts and tensioners are in great condition currently if requested.

Best to have this service performed in your area and warranty receipt in the proud new owner's name.

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago

@Kelvinsvt (The 6 is in place of the 1)
I have confirmed this with the Douglas County DMV where the mistype occurred and with the Colorado state dept of revenue and both agree this is an obvious clerical error on their part.

There may be a process to have it corrected
    See pics #116 and 117.

A clean 2 owner with no miles. Pictures sure look like it. Rare Horsey here. GL

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago

@Rossocorsa1960 Thank you for your patience,

According to the DMV The known private ownership history recorded since new are as follows,

The Gary Smookler & family of Colorado
    Until 2018

Technosolve corp Fred Amir Faiz of Washington
    Until present

  • Rossocorsa1960 1 yearago

@TheNext1 Good luck with the sale

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago

@Rossocorsa1960 I will call the CO DMV in the county that started recording in 1987 and ask if they can confirm the owner in 87 is indeed the first owner.

    Will that help ?

  • Rossocorsa1960 1 yearago

@TheNext1 ok. Receipts are fine but I’d need ownership documentation for the period in question and 80-87 is a large gap. It appears you cannot document ownership from new until ‘87 at a minimum. Is that accurate?

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago

    @Rossocorsa1960 I have no receipts from 1981-1986

So there may not have been any services performed in the first 5 years since the car was only driven 150-200 miles in that time.

I do have the records from 1987-current.

  • Rossocorsa1960 1 yearago

@TheNext1 Sorry, not really unless I have to assume the car wasn’t driven for 10 years since new.
    It’s a pretty large gap

  • Rossocorsa1960 1 yearago

@TheNext1 Thanks. So to be clear, you cannot document the ownership history from new? It appears that way

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago

@Rossocorsa1960 the first paper records start in 1987

The inspection report from 1990 shows only 200 miles at the time.

I only assume no services may have been performed on an as new car with no miles.

I hope that helps answer your question.

  • TheNext1 (seller) 1 yearago
