A collaborative effort between McKenna Porsche and Bisi Ezeriohia, founder and chief engineer at Porsche tuning company Bisimoto, this 1980 Porsche 911SC has been reimagined as a custom tribute to Steve McQueen. The backdated long hood bodywork is finished in Slate Grey while the cabin has been redone with bomber-style aluminum seats, RS-style door panels, and a host of custom accessories. It weighs in at just 2,400 lbs. and derives over 300 HP from an upgraded 3.6-liter flat-six engine. The car was completed in 2016 and auctioned for charity benefitting California's Boy's Republic, a private school for troubled youth that McQueen attended as a young man. This one-off tribute to the King of Cool is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Oklahoma.

The bodywork has been customized with a backdated long hood nose section and RS-style bumpers. The car is finished in a metallic Slate Grey which is said to have been Steve McQueen’s color of choice, as seen on the 911 driven by his character in the film Le Mans. Accessories include a chrome driver’s side mirror, polished aluminum window moldings, removable Porsche side stripes, exposed oil cooler lines, red brake calipers, and Fuchs-inspired 16” Fifteen52 wheels with #48 center caps and Toyo Proxes R888 tires.

The cabin has been redone and fitted with a pair of custom bomber-style aluminum seats, RS-style door panels, a roll bar, and leather upholstery spanning the dashboard and door tops. Other additions include a Rennline passenger floorboard, drilled aluminum pedals, a three-spoke MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, and a red tachometer dial. A commemorative plaque on the passenger side reads “Project 911 BR 1 of 1 Commissioned in Honor of Steve McQueen” and bears the signatures of its creators Peter Dunkel, Danny McKenna, Chad McQueen, Bisi Ezeriohia, and Brad Boyle.

This 911 has been equipped with an air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-six engine derived from a Porsche 964 and upgraded with Jenvey 48mm individual throttle bodies, a Porsche GT3 intake manifold, Rothsport Racing fuel rails, 993 fuel pressure regulator, Bosch EV14 fuel injectors, Rothsport Racing single-belt pulley system, and AEM Infinity engine management system. The engine breathes through Bisimoto Engineering three-step stainless-steel headers, Burns Stainless exhaust collectors, and a Bisimoto Engineering Helmholtz-chamber exhaust system. Other modifications include a CAN bus electronics conversion, Guldstrand Pro Motorsports Wiring military-spec engine wiring harness, a custom power steering block-off plate, and Bisimoto coilover dampers. A claimed output of 316 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission with an Action Clutch six-puck clutch and custom lightweight flywheel. The car was recently serviced and has reportedly been driven less than 500 miles since the restoration was completed in 2016.

This sale will include a clean title.

@Grit2014 You can register in California but "smog check" will be an issue. They do a dyno test on this year, which it would likely pass being such a great engine build and running cleaner than a stock CIS car but it will fail the visual. CARB will insist on the headers, catalytic, EVAP, EGR, intake, ECU, etc. etc. of the 1990-1994 engine. Since this is such a fabulous mechanical build it would be worthwhile to work with a smog referee (many stations throughout California, and many at community colleges), to get the wonderful BAR tag . As frustrating as it may seem at first, and as horrific as CARB may appear on the surface, the refs are very reasonable. Great investment and the price at 100K is still hovering at the conversion plus a free car! https://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/smog-check-reference-guide.pdf

  • eurocol (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Looks like a great build with unique provenance,
bids should be coming in thick and fast,
as it's way undervalued at the current bid of $ 97K.
    Good luck with the sale.

@garrege True, but I would call this paint more or a pearlescent than a hard metallic, which is why I offered so many different real world lighting and environment pics, because this color is really a high class version of the slate grey with a color shift Glow versus a metallic sparkle.

  • garrege 1 year, 3 monthsago

Slate Gray is an early car color and it was the same color of the ‘70 in the movie but it was NOT metallic.

I am more than confident this car will sell due to its super fair reserve, and I can store the car safely in our climate controlled showroom during the needed shipping arrangement time for domestic and oversea buyers, so please bid with confidence there also.

@Grit2014 No, came into Oklahoma on a California title, and that is the door ajar buzzer that you are hearing, which I will say that Porsche did have the most annoying production buzzer sound. Ha ha

  • Grit2014 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Also what is the buzzing sound coming from the interior, you can hear on both videos.

  • Grit2014 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Any possible issue with registration in CA?

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@burnrubr I don’t personally have the dyno sheet or a weight receipt, but I have supplied the Bisimoto Engineering dyno tuning video and screen shot of one of the runs, and I can personally tell you this car is a screamer with no doubt about the Bisimoto performance statements.

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Dyno sheet and weighing scale receipt available? thanks

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

300 whp/ 2400 lb is heaven esp if the gears were shortened to Cup or RS specs. Front windshield defroster and heat is a must for us folks in the cold States. I don't mind owning this.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

The Cold Start Video has been posted.

  • Spiker_911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@240zGuild will do. I intended to call today but work got out of control. Will call before auction ends.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Spiker_911 Feel feee to give me a call anytime if you have more questions, you have my number, I am available anytime.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Spiker_911 That is correct, and they are still in climate controlled and less than 500 mile perfect condition.

  • Spiker_911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Can you please confirm age of tires? Having trouble making out the date codes in the photos. I think it says mid 2015, but would appreciate confirmation. Thank you.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Ok guys, I have had a few guys message asking about the “Cold Start” of this car, so I did make a video that I will have Pcar upload in the morning, and I think everyone inquiring will be way more than satisfied.

I will also be having the car Ceramic Coated before the auction closes, which is due to already having an appointment to have it done, so that is one other Perk or Option to consider with the cars overview.

  • Dwhite (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Man, this cars ticks so many of the right boxes. I wish I had space to put this in my garage. Very cool build and great looking as well. GLWA.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Grit2014 The pics and videos are over the last few weeks up to this last Sunday, but there are a few Larry Chen photos from the 2016 articles, which are only a few of them without the side stripes.

My offer was to install AC at pure cost, which would be the electric AC setup so it didn’t clutter the engine bay again, and that ballpark cost is about $3k.

I haven’t considered offering the heat due to the early cars heating systems not being that good anyway, and the fact the additional metal work to the Bisimoto headers would once again clutter up the look of the car, but I have been driving the car in cooler temps in the 40’s on Nov, Dec, Jan where the car really wasn’t uncomfortable at all

  • Grit2014 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

How current are all these pictures, and what do you estimate the cost would be to add heat and air.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@chuckent Just let me know if you need anything else.

And guys, I cannot comment enough about Bisimoto Engineering’s help after the build, so just know they are there for support and help where they can during your ownership.

  • chuckent (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

It does. Interesting set up. thanks

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@chuckent Just a direct answer from Bisimoto Engineering, “ None, as the torsion bars are retained, and the custom eibach /bisimoto coilovers act as helpers.”

    Hope that helps.

  • chuckent (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Are the rear shock towers reinforced? It is hard to tell from the photos. I assume that the front suspension is standard fare, no upgrades?

For some that have asked about the driving video speeds, that is a 65mph zone where a declared “Passing Speed” of about 80mph was hit before shifting into 4th gear for a needed decel, and I am not a hitting full throttle due to not wanting to obscenely break the traffic laws. I do hope that helps, along with the earlier video segments that show how the car idles with also exhibiting smooth and snappy throttle response.

  • nobrakes (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Great seller here who I would call the "Singer" of reimagined Datsun 240z's and someone who has owned and curated sales of some of the most important 240z's in the world. He is a highly talented builder in his own right. I have seen this car, and after the seller rescued it from a dormant state he has applied his skills to getting it fully sorted for the next owner. It is in my estimation more akin to the original idea of the "Outlaw" with a focus on the visceral over creature comfort as we come to expect in those 1/2 million dollar plus builds by the like of Singer et al. Steve McQueen would be proud. GLWTS

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Guys z Just so anyone who is interested in owning this car knows, Bisimoto Engineering has been super awesome and helpful with any questions and needs with this car 6 years after the build. Bisi has always been available to address any questions or needs.

I wanted a more street friendly tune than the tune seen in the supplied Bisimoto dyno video below, and Bisi himself was right there two time zones away tweaking the program to achieve what I wanted. There is a lot to be said for that, along with the fact he still had the original tune file still handy just in case the car had any future needs.

@240zGuild I was also shocked at that sale price I would have expected a better result being it was for charity and a beautiful car.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Here is another of many articles done about this car, and Larry Chen services were brought in for some great shots.

@NineThirty Tell me about it, I'm not greedy just back to 2019 and I'll be good but 2016 and I'll take a C4s and C2s please :)

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Damaho912 It sold for $85k plus fees on during a non premium time on a weekday back in 2016, which seemed very odd for a charity car to me, but the Mecum projected sale was $135k back then. The car also comes with a 2016 pre-auction appraisal for considerably more.

Here is one of the 2016 writeups about the car.

Bid in the amount of $911

  • NineThirty (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Looks like a great car and a blast to drive. Should do considerably more than the previous sale price. Wish Pcar would list a time machine so I could go back to 2016 a buy this car.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@chuckent The hood opens normally, they cable is just easier access to the safety latch after the factory release handle is pulled.

I do believe the diff is standard LSD, and I am unaware of a build thread by Bisimoto Engineering, but they are pretty well known, as is other contributors to the build.

I have addressed the offer to add the Electric AC option to the car at pure cost if the buyer does in fact want it, but most I have chatted with have not shown the concern considering the build style.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@chuckent I thought I submitted those, but I will definitely get those resubmitted.

The module on the back panel is the AEM Infinity engine management module and interface.

  • chuckent (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Does the 915 have LSD? Any upgrades to the front suspension? Any pictures of the build? How does the front hood open? I noticed a free cable attached to the latch. AC a must for many of us, as is heat. Pretty car

  • chuckent (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

can you post pictures of the frunk with the rug removed, showing the shock towers, back of dash ect...? Also, what is the electronics attached to the interior back bulkhead?

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Spiker_911 Oh, I hear you there, because I drive all my cars year round also, and in looking at this system in recognition of your stated upcoming concern, it would be fairly simple to build a bolt on heat collector to duct right into the body components, but the headers were just too pretty. Lol

  • Spiker_911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@240zGuild thanks for the quick reply. I think this is really interesting. I live in a mountainous region and often do canyon runs, which even in summer can be quite cold (near freezing) in the early morning hours before getting hot in the afternoon. I know many (maybe most) wouldn’t care in a build like this, but I tend to drive my cars year round as long as streets are clear.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@Spiker_911 The car is a factory Air Car, and still has the hoses run, but it is not intact for the sport appearance.

With that being said, you beat me to the punch with my upcoming offer to install a more appealing Electric AC at cost if the buyer found it necessary, but I was waiting to see if anyone was concerned with it on this style car.

It doesn’t have the exhaust manifold heat collectors for obvious custom header reasons, but something could be fabricated for functionality due to the rest of the body components being there, but I wasn’t thinking most would be driving this car in cold conditions?

  • Spiker_911 (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Beautiful car. Does it have heat and air conditioning? And if so, how does it blow. Also, the seats are interesting, but worry me from a comfort standpoint. Are they comfortable enough for spirited drives?

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

@CartBeforeHorse Ha ha, but if you watch the running/driving video, you will see it is actually pretty quiet with normal putting around.

  • CartBeforeHorse (registered bidder) 1 year, 3 monthsago

Good grief. Headers and two pulse chambers. HOA delight!
    Beautiful build. Good luck seller.

  • 240zGuild (seller) 1 year, 3 monthsago

We are excited to offer this super cool and very quick Bisimoto Engineering built backdated Porsche 911BR, and please don’t hesitate to ask any questions to let us know if any additional information is needed along with way of this listing.

The car was bought by a local notable collector back in 2016, and from there is was part of the collection with no miles added to it, but I have added over 300 miles to the car during the servicing from the 6 year slumber.

All the videos are within the last couple weeks up to yesterday, and I have tried to demonstrate the Normal Use and also Fun Use of the awesome sounding exhaust system on this snappy 3.6L build, so I hope
I hit the target showing the cars dual purpose fun. For some who question the seats, they are actually very comfortable as well as fitting the theme of the car, but they are super easy to change with anyone’s personal if so desired.
