This 1980 Porsche 911SC Coupe has been extensively upgraded with off-road modifications paying tribute to Porsche’s acclaimed rally racing history. Finished in Black Metallic over tan upholstery, this example has been fitted with aftermarket headers, an Achtung Kraft airbox cover, modified front struts, reindexed torsion bars, KYB rear shocks, a front bump steer kit, hood-mounted off-road lights, a rear spoiler, front skid plate, roof rack, and much more. This custom Safari build is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida with approximately 100k miles on the odometer.

This 911SC was previously refinished in its factory-specified shade of Black Metallic. In creating the Safari theme, a front chin spoiler and skid plate were added along with a hood-mounted off-road light pod, a whale tail rear spoiler, mudflaps, and a roof rack. It rides on refinished factory 16” Fuchs wheels dressed in new BF Goodrich K02 tires. An aftermarket spare wheel with a matching tire is also included. The seller notes several exterior imperfections as depicted in the gallery.

The cabin features tan upholstery contrasted with a black dashboard, center console, headliner, upper door panels, and floor mats. Equipment includes factory Sport Seats, a MOMO Mod 7 steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker in yellow, a WEVO shifter, and a switch panel in place of the radio.

The air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine produces up to 180 HP stock and drives the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed 915 manual transmission. The seller indicates that newly installed items include the engine oil cooler, intake manifold gaskets, warm-up regulator, fuel injectors, and all brake calipers, pads, and brake lines. Suspension modifications consist of modified front struts, reindexed torsion bars, new Bilstein struts, new KYB extended rear shocks, and a front bump-steer kit.

This sale will include a clean title and a spare wheel and tire.

The seller would like you to know: “When I thought about building a Safari 911, I wanted to start with a mechanically solid car that was a bit cosmetically rough around the edges. This car fits that. The beauty of it is that you can go and lay with it, get it all dirty while going places no ordinary 911 should, and not be overly concerned with scratching the paint or giving it some bruises. I've had fun with this one but now it's time to pass it along so someone else can go have some fun!!”

Great looking car and awesome mods. If it was a C4, I'd be all over the auction since I need all 4 wheels for driving in snow (Alaska). Good luck with the final bidding.

    @Imthedecidah Well said !!

@Duke -- 911's are a blast for winter driving - made for it honestly. I have never really wanted to thrash a 911 in a Jeep's off-road environment, but winter driving a 911 puts the car in its true element. Spending a March in Munich and the Alps made me very aware that the 911 was built to be driven in the winter months - they were everywhere - and dirty as can be! The seller here, calling out his ability to... "get it all dirty while going places no ordinary 911 should, and not be overly concerned" is truly a wonderful experience. I know of a red 964, 'LeakyEddie', often seen ripping around the Rockies year 'round. In the end, there are 911 owners who drive and those that watch -- Which one do you want to be? -- GLWA!

Just a few more hours to go !!! Happy to answer any last minute questions.

  • drola (seller) 3 monthsago

@Bruunstar The car does not have LSD

  • drola (seller) 3 monthsago

@Duke Yes, the heater works. The edges of the cowling had some surface corrosion which I protected with touch up paint. Nothing major and did not concern me at all.

  • Bruunstar (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

Does it have a Limited slip trans ?

  • Duke (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

Does the heat work? I'm thinking about this for a winter daily driver while my 993 C4S is in hibernation. Also, I see the bottom of the doors have rust. Are the defects at the corners of the frunk lid in front of the windshield also rust?

@AK9eleven No, the car does not have a/c anymore. It was originally an a/c car but the compressor was removed long ago and I had to remove the front condenser to fit front skid plate.

  • drola (seller) 3 monthsago

    @BubbaMcCranky I agree 100%

Nice car ! AC work ?

  • BubbaMcCranky (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Great build. This looks like about the perfect level of polish for a 911 Safari. Looks pretty good from 10 feet away but has enough imperfections that you shouldn’t be afraid to go have some fun with it off tarmac.

As for questions about using one of these as a daily driver - absolutely. I use mine regularly for DD stuff. The tires and extra suspension travel make eaten up roads a lot less jarring and nerve wracking than they are in the racier Porsches I’ve had.

    Two thumbs up!

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

Couple new videos posted up. One on road driving and one off road driving (well, sort of off road).
    The car drives great !!!

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@Flat6porsche914 Honestly, I didn't notice. I didn't specifically check either. But usually when I come across broken head studs they either fall out when I remove the valve cover or they are sitting there kinda obvious. None of that happened when I did the valve adjustment.

Thanks for posting the invoices. When you did the valve adjustment did you check for broken/loose head studs? Curious why they didn't do it while the engine was out.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@EJFrog Sure. I drive it for days at a time. It has no AC and too hot here in south Florida to drive full-time. But if I lived in a cooler climate, I wouldn’t hesitate at all.

  • EJFrog 3 months, 1 weekago

Would you be comfortable using this as a DD or strictly a weekend/play car?

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@JBoxerGT2 Thanks !! Reality is that I've received mixed reviews on the roof rack. The beauty of it is that if you don't like it, you can take it off. Just turn the four knobs on the mounts and done. Simple as that.
Personally I think it looks super cool with the spare tire strapped to it.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

Invoice for work done to car right before I bought it is now in the gallery

  • JBoxerGT2 (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Looks great! With the rack even better. Sounds healthy too.

If there are any specific pics anyone would like please ask and I'll be happy to snap some. Also I'm going to prepare a driving video today. Question is - do I include a little off road action ?? There is a pretty decent field nearby that I could go through and get the car dirty again. To me dirt on this car is a badge of honor. I usually drive it around dirty and covered in mud. Always gets a reaction from anyone who sees me driving it.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@Bruce914 You could always buy or borrow a stock exhaust system just to use for smog and the revert back to the headers. Not that I would ever encourage anyone to break or work around any rules haha

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Great looking car - a little rough around the edges so I would not be afraid to go have fun with it. Watching closely even though I cannot smog it in California as is.

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@Craignyc For front suspension I basically copied what the major "go to" company does by dropping the spindles and inverting the tie rod ends with their bump steer kit. Since the car already had the turbo tie rods this was easy to do. The rear suspension is basically reindexed torsion bars with extended shocks. I never measured the exact amount of lift as I basically set it by eye. It took many tries and many, many hours to get it just right. I could measure the clearance if you'd like.
The only rubbing I get is at full lock steering to the left. I'm going to take a look to see if I can eliminate it. I believe it's the tire rubbing on the oil cooler bracket but not 100% sure. Been meaning to get to that but age is making me forgetful LOL

  • Flat6porsche914 (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

    @drola ok

  • Craignyc (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Is the lift kit from a particular company or did you just piece it together? How many inches is the car lifted? Do you get any tire rubbing under load?

  • aircooledguyks (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

    Moab here we come!

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@Flat6porsche914 I have a 4 page invoice totaling $22k which I added to the gallery last night. Waiting on @pcarmarket to add it. That’s about all I have though. I did an oil change and valve adjustment myself about a week ago so car should not need anything for the time being.

  • Flat6porsche914 (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

Very cool build. Do have any maintenance/history records on the car? TIA
    Don

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@artworldtoken Thanks !! Definitely a head turner. On the road, at the red light, gas station etc. Pretty much everywhere !!

  • drola (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

Hello everyone, and thanks for looking at my car. First thing I will say is, “purists look away !!!!” LOL
I’ll be following the auction closely. And will be happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of my knowledge.
This car is super fun to drive around. As much on the street as it is off road.
    Let the bidding begin !!!
