Available for auction is this 1980 Porsche 911 SC finished in Paint to Sample Metallic Burgundy over a black leather interior. Porsche reintroduced the “SC” designation for the 1978 model year for the first time since the 356SC. The new SC featured an aluminum 3.0L air-cooled engine paired with a 5-speed 915 transmission, and would be produced through the 1983 model year. This 1980 example comes equipped with 16″ Fuchs wheels, Sport Seats, a sunroof, power windows, and cruise control. It is said to have been the subject of extensive refurbishment including, a glass-out respray, a reupholstered interior, an engine-out service, a new clutch, an upgraded Griffith air conditioning system, and more. Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity this SC is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida while showing just under 63k miles on its odometer.

This Coupe is finished in Metallic Burgundy, a special Paint to Sample shade, and is said to have undergone a bare-metal, glass-out respray under previous ownership. Equipment includes front fog lights, color-keyed mirrors, black U.S.-spec rear bumperettes, and an extendable antenna. Detailed images can be found in the gallery. It rides on a set of 16” Fuchs wheels with color-matched inserts, which come dressed in Pirelli P6000 tires from 2010.

According to the Porsche COA, the cabin was originally upholstered in Hannibal Grey partial leather, and has since been reupholstered in black leather. The front Sport Seats feature perforated inserts and match the black headliner and carpets. A new windshield has been installed and in 2019 an upgraded Griffith air conditioning system was added. Amenities include power windows, cruise control, a power sunroof, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette stereo with Bluetooth.

Power comes from an aluminum air-cooled 3.0L flat-six engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, which produces up to 180 HP and 175 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed 915 manual gearbox. A major engine-out service is said to have been carried which included rebuilding the 930-specification timing chain and tensioners, resealing the cam chain boxes, re-grinding the camshafts, adjusting the valves, as well as all new seals, new head studs, valves and guides, rockers, oil cooler lines, oil pressure sensor, and thermostat. A new clutch, throw-out bearing, and rear crankshaft seal were also installed at the time of the engine-out service.

This sale will include the owner's literature, a tool kit, a Porsche COA, and a clean title.

I own a 79 911SC that I purchased in 1979 and the engine lid has the exact same slant to it due to having only one support strut on the left hinge. Not going to say ALL but most 911s of this era show the same downward slope to the left.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@twickes40 did you happen to see the photographs I made and posted of engine hatch cover that are compared to my 84 Carrera. As you can see when you compare the two they are fairly consistent between the two cars.

  • twickes40 (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@Driveologist I too own a handful of 911s. Two of which I purchased from this site. I, as well as others have a right to ask questions. Its the whole point of the comments section. My question is legitimate. Look at picture 13. The R to L lid gaps are significantly different. Now look at how the lid aligns horizontally with the heckblende. It's slopes from L to R. All this misalignment has made me question my interest. For others, this may not be a concern and I'm sure they will bid accordingly. Good luck to everyone.

@Lony61 as an avid collector and driver of many Porsche’s, including many air cooled 911’s, I have to say you are 100% absolutely positively correct. 9-10 times an arm chair quarterback, that will never bid nor buy is to make the random comment.

These cars were made and sold to be driven, not be show pieces. Buy this, drive this, enjoy this and most importantly modify it to your own tastes. That’s what is amazing about SC’s. There is a billion of them.

Beautiful car. I am throwing my hat in.

@SummerYellow I am also going to be at Amelia on Friday at the Works Reunion, my 87 Porsche 930 and my 84 Porsche 911 are in the judged field, so I have to have then on the field by 9:00 A.M. and will be there all day. This auction ends on Friday at 5:00 P.M. I can be available any time tomorrow for you to see and drive the car in Jacksonville. My home is 37 miles from Amelia. On Saturday I will be at Cars and Community and some auctions.

@fueledbymetal OK I guess it does state that. I bought the car as you see it in the photographs. I bought the car when it was 38 years old. I absolutely love the way the car looks without the rear spoiler or wing as you call it. Either is correct for the car. I believe that would be a matter of preference for the buyer.

I don’t mean to sound combative to anyone that is leaving comments about my 1980 Porsche SC it is a beautiful car, low miles, runs extremely well and handles superbly, and that has been well-maintained. It is not and not stated by any means a car that should be on the golf course at Amelia or Pebble Beach but it is a car that somebody can get with their local Porsche club, enter local car shows and be extremely proud of what they have.

I certainly would understand the need for documentation since new for all repair work that has been done to an airplane, being that I own two airplanes and understand the need for that kind of documentation, but for a used car, I feel that a lot of Porsche people are losing out of some very good cars due to a piece of paper or an inconsequential detail. Example,
spoiler, or no spoiler on this type of a driver / show quality car should be at a buyers preference, because the buyer is one who needs to be happy, not a commentor.

Again, each to his own, and each person’s personal preference on what they want. But, this is one really nice car that if somebody actually saw it in person and drove, it would not hesitate to purchase it.

  • fueledbymetal (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@Lony61 The Certificate of Authenticity states the car was optioned with front and rear wings but the rear wing is missing.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@SummerYellow The cold start video and the driving video have been added for your review.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@twickes40 I have made both left and right hand photos of the engine compartment lid. I want to say bonnet because I have English cars also. I took photographs of both the a DSC in my 84 Carrera. As you can see in the photos the gaps look fairly consistent.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

@fueledbymetal if you’re referring to the rear deck lid, I have made additional photographs both right and left. Also comparing them to my 1984 Carrera the gaps seem to be fairly consistent between the two cars. I’m not really sure what you’re referring to when you refer to wing removal but I have never had the car apart.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 1 monthago

Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.

  • fueledbymetal (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@twickes40 It most certainly could be if the wing removal work was botched resulting in either poor re-installation of the stock engine lid or replacement with poor quality lid lid. Either way, good eye spotting it and I look forward to the answer.

  • twickes40 (registered bidder) 1 year, 1 monthago

@fueledbymetal a wing would have nothing to do with the R/L gaps.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@SummerYellow As far as door ID tag date vs certificate of authenticity. I don’t know what’s up with that either.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@SummerYellow the sunroof works perfectly fine. I have a new felt for the sunroof just have not yet installed it.

  • SummerYellow (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

    Lony61-
Any explanation for the worn/torn sunroof felt seal? Is the sunroof operable?
Notice that door jamb ID tag has 02/80 production date and the COA lists 3/28/80 ?
Would love to see it running and driving.

  • fueledbymetal (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@twickes40 The COA states that it came with a spoiler front & rear, so I think the engine lid condition is linked to the missing rear spoiler.

  • twickes40 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Thanks for all that. Can you get some of those invoices from the previous owner and post them? Also, do you know why the engine lid is so misaligned? The gaps are quite large.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@twickes40 thank you for your bid questions.

What I have as far service work is an email from 12/30/2014 to the previous owner, which states that it was a bare metal re-spray to original color on a rust free straight, never wrecked body. With all new window seals.

The transmission was disassembled, cleaned and inspected. First and second gear, dog teeth, and the Syncro rings were replaced as well as all seals and gaskets.

Engine was disassembled to long block cleaned engine tin was repainted, new front rear crank shift seals were installed, thermostat O-rings, oil cooler, seals and all pressure switch replaced. Fuel injectors were removed and cleaned and new seals installed. Air filter and spark plugs were replaced timing chain tensioner‘s were disassembled and reassembled using factory rebuild kits. This work was performed at around 56,331 miles.

The tires are old with very good tread, however, due age, they need to be replaced.

The engine and transmission are original to the car.

In 2017 mileage 59,717, the valve work was done in which new head studs were replaced. New timing chain, valve guides and seals.

In January 2018, all new Bosch fuel injectors were replaced.

When I bought the car in July 2018, I had an all new Griffith AC system installed. That was at mileage 60,392. When tested the AC blows 45° in 90° temperatures.

Tomorrow I should have posted the coldstart video and a driving video that have been requested.

I Apologize for this being a late response. I hope this has helped in answering some of your questions.

@seller Beautiful example. A couple of questions:
    1. Do you have any receipts/documentation for service/paint?
    2. Do you know if it was a glass out respray?
    3. Date code of tires?
    4. Any synchro issues with the 915?
    5. Are the engine and trans original?
    Thanks!

@SummerYellow some ads take longer than others to come offline. The car cannot be purchased anywhere other than this auction at this time as per our service agreement

  • SummerYellow (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Car is currently listed on Hemmings for $67,500.00.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@fueledbymetal this is a non-smokers car and no evidence of it ever having been smoked in. The engine work was performed in September 2017 at mileage 59,717 the air conditioning blows 45° with outside temperatures in the 90s. I have never use the cruise control so I cannot say whether it works or doesn’t work but I will check for you. I will post some driving videos in a cold start videos prior to Monday. I do have a clean Carfax report the car. The car drives in the handles as Porsches do. It drives and handles great. I do not have any knowledge of the front suspension ever having been refurbished.

  • Jetman (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Those seats look beautiful and all but they are definitely a different black than the dash, carpet and doors. Just saying.

  • brennerf (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@Lony61 thanks, they look gray in the photos

  • fueledbymetal (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

    @fueledbymetal Two more:
Can you post a carfax report?
Has the suspension ever been refreshed? The mileage may be low but the rubber bits will need it for sure due to the age.

  • fueledbymetal (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

    A couple of questions
    1) Are the AC & cruise control functional?
    2) How long ago (year & mileage) was the engine work completed?
    3) Are there any known mechanical or cosmetic issues not covered in the listing?
    4) Is there evidence of being owned by a smoker (smell, burn marks etc)?
    5) Can you post a cold start video?

@Rockmacho2021 no, the car has never been on bring a trailer.

  • 91179viz (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

    Ok. Thank you.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@brennerf the seats are black leather. Maybe it’s the way the sun light reflects on the pictures. But the whole interior is black.

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@91179viz you misunderstood something those are current photos of the car taken about three weeks ago. I have owned the car for five years. The interior was black when I purchased the car. The interior is absolutely beautiful. The seats are black leather. With black panels, black carpet and black headliner.

  • Rockmacho2021 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Wasn't this on BAT last week?

  • 91179viz (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

So these are photos from before you purchased the car? It seems curious that PCAR would allow less than current photos and condition. Would love to see the whole black interior. Is it all leather? COA says original interior was partial leather. How long have you owned the car?

  • Lony61 (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

Thank you very much for the question, I purchased the car, and it had already been converted to the black leather interior. It is a very beautiful interior and the sport seats are black leather.

The description says that the original interior was gray but that it has been reupholstered to black. But the seats are actually gray, correct? And the color of the exterior, is that the original color?
