Up for auction is this custom 1980 Porsche 911SC backdate finished in Nardo Grey.  Beginning with a European market 911SC, this 1980 example was treated to a custom nut and bolt rotisserie restoration by Backyard Legends of Concord, N.C. The car was fitted with backdated long-hood bodywork, a carbon-fiber roof panel, and a custom interior with leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber.  It also features a rebuilt 3.2L short-stroke engine, upgraded torsion bars, Elephant Racing suspension bushings, and other performance upgrades.  Since completion, this 911 has spent its life being trailered to different car shows including the 2019 Works Reunion at Amelia Island where it placed third in class.  Having traveled approximately 200 miles since completion, this no-expense-spared 911 backdate is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Georgia.

During the restoration by Backyard Legends, this 911SC was stripped to bare metal, fitted with backdated long-hood bodywork, and refinished in PPG Nardo Grey paint with black and white Porsche side stripes.  Pop-out rear quarter windows were added along with chrome trim and moldings, a single driver’s side mirror, gold rear Porsche lettering, and a custom exposed carbon-fiber roof panel.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  This 911 rides on new 7” x 9” Fuchs 17” wheels dressed in Dunlop tires.

Inside, the cabin has been completely redone with new black leather and Alcantara upholstery with red deviated stitching as well as RS-style carbon fiber door panels and custom leather bucket seats.  The roll bar has been wrapped in matching Alcantara upholstery and Rennline aluminum floorboards were added along with a Rennline dashboard insert, a black leather bowtie steering wheel, a Wevo shifter, and an upgraded electric A/C system.

The original 3.0L flat-six engine in this 911SC has been freshly rebuilt and upgraded to a 3.2L short-stroke along with Mahle Motorsports Pistons, SuperCup cams, a standalone EFI, a Carrera 3.2 intake, Carrera chain tensioners, and a Rasant coil-on-plug ignition.  The engine has also been fitted with SSI heat exchangers and a Dansk dual-outlet exhaust.  The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual 915 transmission, and the suspension has been equipped with upgraded torsion bars and Elephant Racing bushings.  The mechanical and electrical restoration was carried out by Backyard Legends and CM Electronics of Bessemer City, and extensive records and photographs from the build are said to be available.

Accompanied by a clean title, this one-of-a-kind 911SC backdate makes a perfect choice for avid drivers and concours enthusiasts alike.

As we are in the last hour, just want to wish everyone success and hope that a fellow Porsche geek provides a good home.
There is little liklihood that you could reproduce this car for anywhere near our reserve..,..not to mention finding a nice not rusty donor. And if all that works out, you still will have have 12-18 months in getting it built and ready to go!
Thanks again for looking and hope it works...

@scottyd40 The world we live in..GA has no testing except for the most populated parts of Metro Atlanta.
You could always title it in Montana, as many people are doing now...(not that I would suggest it, just sayin....)

  • scottyd40 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman Thank you. So for clarification, no catalytic converters which would be a no go in California? I really love this creation but over the top Cali restrictions kills our car passions everytime. Ughhh. Time to move back to Georgia!

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@scottyd40 I did see your question before, and did reply. I may have sent it to you personally instead of here on the board.
Remember, the donor car was a 1980 SC Euro Spec. The car had/has no convertors, airpump, reactors, etc. anything. . I do not know what CA's rule is regarding older cars or exemptions. Just want to make sure I'm giving you full disclosure, hope that helps..

  • scottyd40 2 years, 9 monthsago

With the engine modifications, does the seller or anyone know if this vehicle is still California legal? I know someone asked before but I didn't see a reply from the seller unless I missed it somewhere. Thanks.

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@CABRIOLET-INT Yes, he just wanted to make it the lightest and most rigid possible. There was no damage, etc. and the job is beautiful. Even the headliner looks like it was installed in the factory (take a look at driving video, about 1 minute in..)..

  • CABRIOLET-INT (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Nice build but one question why the Carbon-fiber roof panel? Was it a Sunroof car originally and this was the cure.

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Forgot to mention also, you probably can see in the video that the dials are freshly redone as well, Palo Alto Speedo, great vendor....also notice in the video that the clock works!

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Yes, I'll have a driving video up by late this afternoon, weather permitting.
And for those who have asked my directly, yes, the car does have nice wipers, but it doesn't go out in anything near bad weather, so they're in a box....

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

I have also added a few pictures of the pre assembly, and some pictures of the new brakes..

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman I did touch it this morning. There is no damage, physical or cosmetic.
It was a water drip apparently from the last time I washed it.
I have taken a photo where I wiped the dust out of it and you can see. I don't know how long it will take to get it up, but if you need it asap, I will be glad to email it to you.
Glad it's not an issue, thanks...

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@c2silver I see the mark, I will touch it in the morning and post up...

  • c2silver (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allen, can you take a look at picture 111, it appears that there is a hairline crack in the wheel (lower left area).

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman CORRECTION-In a comment to someone's question earlier today, I mistakenly wrote that the rear valence and hood were fiberglass. WRONG--I don't know why I typed that down here, but the front and rear bumper covers/valences are fiberglass--NOT the HOOD, which is steel just like the rest of the core pieces.
So SORRY, but please make the mental note...

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman I am just putting up two videos of a cold start. The first one was after sitting for roughly a week, so some smoke is expected from the sump/tank. The second one is after about 2 or 3 minutes of driving. Note the exhaust note too, which is beautiful, very reminiscent of my old Factory Sport muffler, but not too intrusive (if you wanna drive with the windows up). Also remember, these rings probably have not seated, as it's only been about 200 miles since its completion. Hope that helps, these videos may take a while to come up because of their size....thanks.

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Hailey198 Thanks for asking--the entire brake assembly was removed F+R to facilitate getting the total blasting and cleaning done. There are new OEM brakes front and rear (not uprated), I think I have a good photo on the brakes, let me see if I can dig it out and I will put it up (hopefully the system will co-operate) Hood and rear valance are fiberglass. Everything else is steel. Thanks for looking...

  • Hailey198 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

I may have missed this but.....Are the brakes upgraded or are they original type and size for this car? Also is the hood and valance backdate pieces steel or fiberglass. This is a beautiful build.

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman And now magically, the picture is up...

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman For some reason, I can't get the rear cargo area picture to come up. I will keep messing with it and try to get it up for your guys...thanks..

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Paulblouin , sorry, no, I do not have the originals, front or rear...

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allenman Forgot, just saw it. I think I have a couple of pix of the rear cargo area. There are no seats back there. There is an upholstery job that matches the seat pattern all the way down to the red stitch, beautifully done. Let me see if I have the pictures and, if not, I will take some more and put them up.

Also, regarding the helmet--no, she is plenty happy to drive on the street and has conventional seat belts as it did when it was new. It is quite user friendly.

  • Paulblouin (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Are the original seats included? Is it called a short stroke because it’s a 3 liter and you put 3.2 heads on it?

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@hardeigh44 Morning everyone, thanks for your interest. Let me see if I can give you a concise answer on the last two or three questions:
    1) Roll bar--the mounts are welded in, as they should be, then the harness bar bolts to the mounts. That way removal is pretty easy and not a big mess ..
2.Regarding CA emissions: I am not versed in CA emissions law. And I don't know if old cars are grandfathered or have exemptions. I can say that the donor car was a Euro spec 1980, so it had no cats or air pump, and still does not. We don't have emissions testing in our part of the world, but I understand some do....
    3. Yes, there are a ton of receipts. I have not totaled them up, but I will. There are a bunch of pages, dozens. I will also get a pic as best I can showing them, it also contains many photos of the car in pieces/assembly. but they are going to be hard to reproduce.
    4. Thanks to MIke 635 for the kind words. He is a true car guy and that means a lot to me.

I'm sure there are more questions coming, and I will do my best to give you the most accurate answer. Good luck!

  • hardeigh44 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Can you add a few pictures of the back seating area? Is that a roll bar? Are you meant to wear a helmet with this configuration?

I don't know this car, but I do know the selling dealer. Allen has been a friend for years. I've bought several cars from him. He's one of the few folks I'd buy a car from sight-unseen. Solid, extremely knowledgeable enthusiast who just happens to sell some really nice cars. Completely reliable and transparent.

Does this car pass CA smog? Thx

  • BarryLe (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Allen: Do you have all the receipts and invoices from the complete restoration? I would be interested to know how much money was spent on this beautiful build. Hopefully, the owner has kept good records.

  • jh986s (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Beautiful build! Is the roll bar welded in or bolted?

  • allenman (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Hi guys,
I am the seller here, Allen @ Encore Motors in GA, just south of Atlanta. over 40 y ear Porsche geek (got my first at age 17), and the company is in business 40 years this year. Speak the language, Concours participant, Judge, and Winner. Just to let you know that I understand the details that you might need.
Let me see if I can address the questions curretnoly up: 1. The EFI system is a Rasant. Google them if you like. It like most everything else mechanical, was installed by CM Motorsports in NC. They have merged with another shop now, but let me just say that the car runs smoothly and has no driviablity issues, other than being a bit crancy when not driven for several days. She's ready to go in less than a minute. There is also another tunable box, made by Innovative Motorsports, for adjusting fuel/air, etc. Those instructions/guide are of course in with the receipts. (Before I forget, I will post a copy of the binder with the receipts/records, all in sleeves chronologically). 2. The car has been weighed and corner balanced. It was just a tick under 2200 pounds. The dyno says the real conservative HP is around 250. That, mated with the 915 and the light weight, makes for a very good time behind the wheel.
My schedule is going to ease after today, and I hope to have a starting /running video up by the weekend. This dual outlet muffler with these downpipes makes a great sound. There was another inquiry about the air conditioning. It is a unit I have never seen before, and is electric. Makes for a much neater engine compartment and much less vibration. Does it work like a new 992 AC? No it does not, but will definitely help to get the temp down (and believe me when I say it is hot down here). I will try to find that particular receipt and dig it out. I will do my best to answer each of your questions thoroughly and accurately.
It's hard to relate how good this car looks in person, not to mention the CF roof, and the beautiful rich looking interior scheme. I thank you for your interest, and we look forward to someone owning a special Porsche....Good luck and have fun!
