Finished in Diamond Silver Metallic over a Black interior, this 1980 Porsche 924 came factory equipped with the optional Touring Package as well as the rare Sport Group 1 option (M471) which provided the upgraded chassis and wider track of the 924 Turbo along with adjustable Koni shocks absorbers, stiffer springs, a quicker steering ratio, 5-lug hubs, and Porsche 928 brakes paired with ventilated discs from the 911SC. It was originally sold in Oregon and has been cared for by three owners since. The car benefits from services including a rebuilt fuel distributor, a fuel system overhaul, and replacements of the clutch and spark plugs. Offered as a project car accompanied by an extensive collection of restoration parts, this 924 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Oregon.

This 924 is finished in Diamond Silver Metallic (Z4) and features the chassis of the 924 Turbo (931) as part of the Sport Group 1 option including a .8” wider track, 5-lug wheel hubs, and a rear spoiler. It rides on factory 15” basketweave wheels with Porsche-crested center caps. The seller notes that the paint is wearing thin on several areas including the front and rear fenders, two small dings are present on the driver’s door, the tires are due for replacement, and several black exterior trim pieces are missing. The seller adds that the exterior decals are faded, however, replacement decals are included with the sale. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, this 924 features a Black interior with a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel included as part of the Sport Group 1 option. The car was also factory-equipped with the optional Touring Package which provided power windows and mirrors, air conditioning, a sunroof, a rear window wiper, and a premium 4-speaker stereo system with an electric antenna. The seller notes the air conditioning system was removed by a previous owner and a new driver’s side window regulator has been installed. The seller recommends the front seats be reupholstered and indicates the carpet is faded, and the dashboard shows several cracks. Half of the driver’s inner door panel is missing, however, a replacement door panel is included. The radio, power windows, and gauges are all said to be working properly.

This 924 is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 110 HP and 122 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle. The Sport Group 1 option adds adjustable Koni shocks with stiffer springs and sway bars as well as a short-ratio steering rack and 928 brakes paired with ventilated discs from the 911SC. Notable service items include a rebuilt fuel distributor, fuel system refurbishment, clutch replacement, new spark plugs, and a new Die Hard Group 41 battery. The seller notes that the oil light is present on the dashboard and may be caused by either low oil or a faulty oil level sensor. A collection of parts will be provided to the next owner to refurbish the car as listed below:

  • Replacement decals with "S" hood graphic
  • Door card
  • Timing belt
  • Rebuilt starter (spare)
  • Wiper blades
  • Brake pads
  • Thermostat

The seller would like you to know: “Ultra-rare 924 ‘S’ rolling project! With less than 100 924s equipped with the M471 package available in the US for 1980, this is a project that is sure to appreciate.”

@928Pcar Agree.. didn't think I'd be the winning bid.. but nonetheless.. will be restored and share a garage with a few other early transaxle cars.. exciting!

That’s a depressing outcome. Should have brought more.

I thought I would post this as many others have been asking me the same question: Hello, last min question.. if you have time. Does the car currently run? I saw the short drive video.. but is it road worthy at all in your opinion Can in be driven onto a transport truck? How are the brakes? firm peddle or ? Shifts into gears without issues? Any fluids leaking? How are the lower door sills, any rust present? Thanks!

@pinodino Yes, the car start well with a new battery, fuel distributor rebuild and spark plugs. The brakes work well and do not have any sticking calipers. The transaxle shifts smoothly as it should. A very small oil leak was noticed during storage but nothing to be concerned with. As I mentioned before, this car is 80% ready for the road with (a set of tires) and 100% ready to be loaded for transport. Finally, these cars are fully galvanized and this car has been in dry storage since 2004, so there is absolutely zero rust that I have witnessed.

Some people have been asking if this is the same car that was written up in the German Cars for Sale Blog back in 2018. The answer is YES! You can read more about it here: https://germancarsforsaleblog.com/roll-the-dice-1980-porsche-924-m471/

I did not discover this article until after I purchased the car but it gave me confidence that this is a rare example worth the effort of a full restoration. Five years on and multiple projects later, my storage space and time are limited. Much of the expensive and time consuming work has been done on this car; fuel distributor rebuild, Clutch replacement and NOS drivers window regulator and motor. All this car needs to be a driver are two seats and a set of tires. You can chip away at the rest as your time and budget allow or go all in from the get go. These cars are highly coveted by the next generation of Porsche enthusiasts and getting harder to find in restorable condition.

@garth66 Good catch! Nearly identical vehicles. :)

Note that the wiring diagrams in pics 106 & 107 are for a DeTomaso Pantera, not a Porsche 924.

@spedster89 The car has sat for many years prior to the start of my restorative work - clutch and fuel distributor rebuild. The speedometer and odometer work as they should. I don't have any records of an odometer gear replacement.

  • Spedster89 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Is the mileage accurate and is the odometer functioning, any documentation on odometer gear replacement?

  • Adrock (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@GLTL I pulled the dipstick today and there is plenty of oil. I uploaded a picture as well. It appears the oil pressure sensor is the culprit.

1 - Yes, I have a clear Oregon title in my name. The car has been in storage since it was last registered in Washington.
2 - I can verify this for you early next week. The car is in storage about a hour away and I won’t have access until business hours resume.
3 - The square mark is where a piece of tape used to be. When I acquired the car, there was a hole and no wiper present. I am unaware a wiper was present from the factory. Blanking plugs are readily available on eBay however.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you,
    Adam

    A couple questions.

    1. The car is located in Oregon, but the pictures show Washington license plates. Can you confirm that you have clear title in your name?

    2. The listing states, "The seller notes that the oil light is present on the dashboard and may be caused by either low oil or a faulty oil level sensor.". Have you pulled the dipstick to confirm oil level? That would narrow the possibilities.

    3. Pic #13 shows the rear hatch with a square mark lower left. It very appears that the car came with a rear wiper that has been removed, leaving a hole in the hatch. Is this correct?

    Thanks!
