Up for auction is this 1981 Porsche 911SC Coupe finished in Light Blue Metallic over a dark blue interior. Purchased by the seller over 20 years ago at 54k miles, this Coupe has been kept up to date on all necessary service and upgraded with Recaro racing seats, an aftermarket stereo system, and a 150 MPH speedometer.  Featuring an air-cooled 3.0 L flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, this beautiful driver-grade Coupe is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of New York with approximately 100k miles showing on the odometer.

This 911SC is presented in Light Blue Metallic and the seller reports that the car underwent a complete high-quality respray shortly before their purchase.  The rear window was replaced under the current ownership and some cosmetic imperfections are depicted in the photo gallery.  This example features front fog lights and factory 16” Fuchs wheels that are currently dressed in Yokohama tires.

The exterior finish is complemented by a dark blue interior and blue Recaro bucket seats.  A crack is depicted on the dashboard toward the window defroster. The speedometer dial was changed to a 150 MPH unit and the original sound system was replaced with an aftermarket radio and speakers.  The air conditioning is reported to be nonfunctional, and heat is only said to come on when the car is in motion.  The oil level gauge is also said to have intermittent issues, and all other gauges are said to be working properly.

This 911SC carries an air-cooled 3.0 L flat-six engine that sends 180 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox.  The engine was reportedly rebuilt sometime prior to the seller’s ownership and this 911SC is said to have only ever required standard routine maintenance over the past two decades.

This sale will include a clean title.  An ideal choice for any passionate driver searching for a classic air-cooled Porsche, this 911SC Coupe is not to be overlooked.

    Interesting to see the comments on this one. Although I'd say that buying any car of this age warrants a serious case of 'buyer beware', there is a serious margin remaining on this car if it sells at the current bid price...meaning there is a lot of potential upside. It goes without saying that I don't personally begrudge anyone asking hard questions though, as they are worth asking. Best wishes to seller and all serious bidders...I wish I was in a position to bid as I think I'd take a chance on this one.

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @peterln3 Hi Pete. I put it out there for a viewing and had some calls on it but schedules didn't permit. Too bad as I think it would have impressed.

  • peterln3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    I'd love to bid on this, but site unseen with all my concerns I just cannot do it!
    If it sells for the present price, add the 10K I suggested earlier and you are at market price for a driver. My next question is yes the market is strong now, but as was said earlier what about in 5 to 10 years from now? Will the market drop or will these will become 100K Pcar like early 70s 911s are now. You send your money and take your chances....
    One last question: Has anyone following this auction actually seen the car in the flesh?
    Good luck to the winner and if not sold I'll be watching...

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    @peterln3 thanks for your insight

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @RAL It really is a great car. I've always felt that $2-4K would almost turn it into a garage queen but who knows. As for all of these air cooled 911's being overpriced right now, I guess we'll all find out over then next 5-10 years. Keep the questions coming and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks.

  • RAL (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @peterln3

    Totally agree, great little car gonna need some TLC. 10K is probably on the conservative side, and those seats... blah! Hopefully reserve reflects these things, unfortunately these cars are so overpriced right now.

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @peterln3 Hi Pete. As you said, not much I can do in 3 hours. If for some reason it doesn't sell which is unlikely, I'll have these things checked and relist. I highly doubt this car needs any full repaint. It looks great. Sunroof works fine (mentioned previously) along with all of the of the dash controls and lights.

  • peterln3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    Hey all,
    Not being critical, just being clear.
    This one is gona need work. To find original seats in blue may be costly.
    To check out the engine PPI not going to happen with 3+ hours left, unless the seller agrees to it for those of us far away.
    Yes, as you can see there is body rust. May be able to fix as a driver without full repaint.
    AC not working; sunroof no mention if if it works; cruse control not working.
    No mention of dash controls working, blinkers, general dash lighting, H&L beam stalk, etc.
    May be a lot of little stuff too. Depending on severity of repairs, I guesstimate another 10K or less would get you to a first class driver. This does not include finding the original matching seats. Recaros will have to do, not so bad....

    Lastly, it’s no one business if you or I never bid, my questions dictate if I bid. So his comments are a moot point

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    @RAL I agree

    Just like BaT there is a group of trollers who get mad if you ask tuff questions
    This is a open forum to learn about these cars besides just pictures posted or words said
    I repeated more then once positive things but I need to understand more. No records of so called engine rebuilt, so I ask, no one should be insulted tell the truth, which the seller explained. Go figure what drives peoples ego, this is a car site to buy and sell cars it’s not a place to hang out and spew insults.

  • RAL (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @joesnovak,

    I’m with you, man. These cars are extremely expensive to maintain, so trying to learn as much as possible is totally understandable.

    Just dealt with another 911 on this site, where seller claimed a recent full service, but couldn’t produce any paperwork. He also claimed a valve adjustment, but when called out by a P car tech showing no evidence of removal of nuts on valve covers, said it was a miscommunication with service shop. What a bunch of BS. If you’re going to claim service performed, have your paperwork in order.

    Get lost, I need to know about the car, sorry
    Your a guy getting on here a saying nice things about nothing, do not common if I cannot learn about the car for sale by questions
    You just go through and tell us what we have already read, no idea if matching no idea on how much rust, your just no value to decide what and if to bid

  • Catdog327 3 years, 1 monthago

    This is a nice looking, desirable hard top in a special color. Seller has owned it for 20 years and has enjoyed as it should, and the next owner is sure to get equal enjoyment - no doubt. @Joesnovak please don't be such a Debbie-Downer. If you're not planning on bidding on the car, then please keep your negative ramblings to yourself and let actual bidders comment and ask the questions.

    @Joesnovak Here to answer any questions as best I can so feel free.

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @Joesnovak Yes it's the original color. From here on in I'll only read compliments. Your making my car upset. lol.

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    Thank You
    I understand

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @Joesnovak OK I'll try to respond to all of this in one shot here. Here's what I know about my car and it's history. The first owner had it for about a year before he sold it to some doctor that owned the car for about 14 years or so. From the paperwork I had (that I still can't find), I reached out to him to let him know is old car was alive and very well. He didn't seem to care. Oh well. Next owner from NJ had it about 5 years and his paperwork showed the engine rebuild, pop-off valve work, and some other things. Also in the batch I still can't find. Been tearing my house apart. There was also the receipt from the paint job. uhg....
    I then purchased it after I had it checked out by a Porsche mechanic. Car always ran great for me. Very smooth. Sounds great. I honestly can't remember if I've had 1 or 2 tune-ups but I've always made sure this car ran well. I understand what you're saying about the shocks but they don't feel shot to me, and my mechanic never expressed a reason to change them. Outside of a few oil changes by foreign car mechanics, I've always exclusively had this car worked on by Porsche mechanics.
    If a rock'n stereo is your thing, you'll want to replace this one. It works fine but certainly won't impress anyone. As for the seats, and I said this earlier in my thread, I totally get it but didn't when I replaced them early in my ownership. With that, they really are great seats. The Fuchs are in great shape and just need paint. I didn't detail my car for the pics. Just gave it a general wash so maybe they would have looked better if I focused my sponge there. Who knows.... Is this car fast? 1981 fast I suppose. It still has plenty of get up and go and continues to pull at speed. I'm a pretty relaxed driver but if the road opens up (rare in NY), I'll stab it up to 100 and then back off quickly before I get pulled over. As for mods, you are correct. I've done no after market mods on this or any vehicle I've ever had. I like to keep it stock and keep it reliable which this car has certainly been. It really has been, and still is a wonderful car to drive. It's been my Sunday morning head clearer for many years.

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    The car looks good, cold engine start was excellent
    Sounds good, nice car for it’s age I agree

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    The car shows under-pinning of rust
    The car live in NE, not the best place even garaged very humid
    The car need to be detailed examination to see inter rust, owner just drive it and kept it original mostly but it looks tried and the paint work is a repaint over original?

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    OK
    No data, no facts. Let me see the records, please. Porsche are noted for required maintenance or all is lost, but this car has a better then SC life without crappy mods
    The engine was reportedly rebuilt sometime prior to the seller’s ownership and this 911SC is said to have only ever required standard routine maintenance over the past two decades.

  • Joesnovak 3 years, 1 monthago

    Nice car overall, but rust is showing in familiar places and that’s not cheap to do right

    Seats would need to be found in blue, no easy and then need reupholstered
    Radio ok, but not a great look
    Fuchs need restored
    Suspension looks original and gotta be shot by now
    Mileage maybe, who knows
    Thoughts

    @peterln3 I don't mind at all.
    Sorry but I do not have the original seats. The pop-off valve was done before I owned it but I haven't found the paperwork yet. I've mentioned some of the repairs in this thread that I've found so far. Along with other paperwork I'm in search of is for the tensioner oiling updates. That may have been done prior to my ownership. I have my current mechanic checking on the valve adjustment records. I know I've had the car tuned up over the years so it's hard to imagine it hasn't been done. Sorry I can't be more detailed as I don't know my way around a engine. I just know if the car needs anything, I bring it in and exchange service for $$. I do confess that I take better care of my cars than I do my house or myself. If I get or find additional info, I will certainly post it.

  • peterln3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    A few questions if you don't mind...
    Do you (by chance) have the original seats?
    Has the chain tensioner oiling updates been done?
    Is there a popoff valve installed on the air box?
    When were or have the valves been adjusted?
    Do you have any service records you would share?
    Nice looking driver and that is what I'm looking for. No trailer queens in my garage!
    Thanks ahead of time for any responses to my questions.

    @VoltageGSR I took the pics and sent them in. I hope they will post soon, and I hope I got the pics you wanted and maybe a few more.
    On a side note, I went thru the records I've found so far and here's a couple of things possibly worth mentioning: at 88K changed 2 front brake calipers and hoses. at 91K replace 2 oil lines from thermostat. replace steering column bering. there's other stuff here but it's tough to read on that receipt but it did total $2400. In Sept, 2016, change fuel pump and filter. I do have another stack of receipts but until I actually find them, I'm unable to claim that I have them. Will look harder over the weekend.

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @RAL Yes, all of the AC components are there an in place.

  • RAL (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @Evan911,

    Does the car retain all of the original A/C components? Are they still in place?

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @VoltageGSR I'll take some more pics when I get home so hopefully they will be posted by morning. If it's raining outside it may delay the pics a day. Not enough light in the garage. The car had a high end paint job before I purchased it and still looks great. The color is original.

  • VoltageGSR (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    Thanks for the quick reply! No lift is ok, mind taking some pics just laying under the car of the suspension area? Has the car ever been repainted etc. appreciate the detailed info, helps a lot !

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @VoltageGSR No signs of rust except a tiny bit under one of the headlights that you can see in the pictures. I'll pull back the carpeting and take more pics of everything in there.
    What other under-pics do you need? I don't have lift but glad to shoot more of whatever you want to see. The AC does not work. I don't think it really worked even when it was working. I never cared enough to add an aftermarket. Everything else is working. Sunroof, windows. The fan for the heater never worked but as long as I'm moving along, the heat comes in just fine. I think I may have a fog light out but I'd have to check. I'm digging here. Cruise control never worked and I never cared. I think that covers it. The car really is a pleasure to drive. Runs great and sounds great.

  • VoltageGSR (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

    any signs or areas of rust sir? May I request some additional underneath pics and frunk pics near battery etc?

    Ac works? Anything not functioning mechanically? Appreciate !

  • Evan911 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

    @marcandcars The seats really are great but I totally get it. Replaced almost 20 years ago. Who knew?
