Introduced in 1978, the 911SC marked the first time the “SC” designation was used since the 356SC and its success helped lead to the continuation of the 911 as Porsche’s flagship model. This 1981 example is finished in classic Guards Red over a brown and tan interior. It features an air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed 915 transmission. Accompanied by service records dating back to 1986, this 911SC is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee showing just over 164k miles on the odometer.
This 911SC is finished in Guards Red and rides on factory 16” Fuchs wheels dressed in Continental tires that were installed in January 2020. The seller reports two minor accidents previously occurred which necessitated a repaint of the engine lid and right rear quarter panel. Additionally, the seller notes they had the driver’s side door and front fender repainted several years ago, and that several chips on the front trunk and passenger’s side door have been touched-up with new paint. Minor dents are reported on the driver’s door, passenger’s door, and driver’s side headlight. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin is appointed in brown and tan leather and was fitted with a new headliner in 2015. Amenities include an aftermarket Kenwood radio with a single CD player, an electric sunroof, air-conditioning, and power windows. The seller notes sheepskin covers have been installed over the front seats and that there is some discoloration on the driver’s seat. Additionally, the seller recommends recharging the A/C system on a yearly basis.
This SC is equipped with an aluminum air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-six engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection that was factory rated at 180 HP and 175 lb.-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 915 transmission. Reported services include head stud replacements in 1992, upgraded Carrera chain tensioners installed in 1998, and a new clutch, fuel injection system, and tires installed in 2020. Additionally, the seller notes that there is an airbox pop-off valve installed. Service records included in the sale date back to 1986.
This sale will include a clean title, spare tire, air pump, car cover, owner’s manuals, and extensive documentation.

Ok, we’ll, there isn’t a wheel bearing issue! Also, the headlights aren’t original, I upgraded them to the modular units where you just have to replace the bulb. They are much brighter, and I had the turn signal/ dimmer switch replaced on the last service.

I don't have a paint meter or access to one. Yes, the left rear quarter panel was repainted when the repair was made to the engine lid. I forgot about that, but I have the work order from the body shop. I have not had any wheel bearing sound. The only sound I reported was in an earlier comment about the driver's side door that Pat Williams repaired in 2010. . The rear speakers are not original, and the silicon was to help secure the speakers to the rear deck. The exhaust system is original and my understanding is that catalytic convertors were standard on these engines. I remember seeing a work order that covered a welding repair to the exhaust system, but I can't find it. No problems with shifting. I had a bushing in the shifter mechanism replaced several years ago by Pat Williams. IN 1997, Memphis Motor Werks rebuilt the transmission, replacing 1st and 2nd gear, and replacing all the syncros, along with replacing the clutch. As far as I can tell the impact guard bar is ok... I am owner #5. I know this because I have the work receipts back to 1985 . I hope this helps!

Hi Harrierguy, few questions. Any chance of paint meter readings? The left rear pictures look like maybe that quarter was painted too? There is a mention of a possible wheel bearing sound, was this resolved? Any story to share with the rear speakers or what looks to be the use of silicone? It somewhat looks like a catalytic convertor is installed, any chance to confirm if one is installed or not or if the original exhaust is in installed with the catalytic convertor and shield. In the driving video, gear changes sound clean; any troubles / repairs (shift bushings). How does the impact guard bar look for the front condenser. Curious is you know how many owners; since you've had it since '99. Thanks for the listing.
based on wadds 1971, I spent about 40 minutes using saddle soap and a soft towel on the drivers side seat to see if I could remove what appeared to be stains on the seat. Looks to me like the saddle soap worked like a champ. The photos should be uploaded tomorrow morning. I think the passenger side looks really good right now. As I mentioned earlier, both seats have been covered for most of the 24 years that I've had the car. I hope this helps!

Renline makes a door stay reinforcement kit that is $49 for each side. Probably a good idea to pre-emptively install on the older 911's if they haven't worn out yet.
Thanks for the question about the seats. I have no idea what discolored the drivers seat. I have had the seats covered for almost the whole time that I have owned the car. I only took the covers off because of a request to see the seats. The passenger side looks excellent. I can only guess that the seat covers caused the discoloration. I have made no attempt to professionally clean or restore the seats because they are always covered. Pat Williams, who is the air cooled 911 guy in Memphis did the repair on the drivers door. It's not pretty, but It works properly. The passenger side door looks perfect and operates perfectly. I believe that Pelican Parts has a kit to strengthen the connection point. As far as pic#137, I was trying to show that there are several chips that have been touched up. The spots are pretty hard to see unless you get the right light/angle.
@Harrierguy - Likely a fun SC overall, but certainly seems to be the essence of a "driver's car", too. Any comment as to what has stained the seats so badly over time? Has any attempt been made to professionally clean, condition, and restore these seats? Otherwise, it sure looks like some new covers would be in order. I've heard that it can be quite a project to properly repair that door check in the passenger's door, too. What were you trying to show us in pic #137?
I was driving my car yesterday and discovered that the windshield washer pump is not operating. It is on the same circuit as the windshield washers, which are working, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Additionally, the sun visors are not original. I have the original visors, but they have worn out and I could not get a brown replacement. The replacement visors are black. I will be uploading several photos later today to show detail of a small (1 1/2") dent on the driver's side headlight piece. Also, there are 3 small chips in the windshield that have been sealed and have been there for over 8 years, before the headliner was replaced. There are numerous small chips that I have touched up on the passengers side door. Lastly, the drivers side door stop attachment point on the door broke and was repaired by Pat Williams. The stop works properly, keeping the door from swinging too far forward and getting damaged by the left front fender. The door does make a clunk noise when opening and closing. mechanism. I want to make sure that all of you who are bidding know about all the little discrepancies that don't show up in the pictures. I hope this gives you a sense of trust that there are no hidden issues with this car.

I don't have access to a lift, so I'm limited on the underside of the car pics. Do you have a specific area underneath you would like to see? Beautiful cars these SC's, but for this one with 164,000 miles on it and 42 years behind it, the gallery is a little light on quality underside photos for me to feel comfortable bidding on it. I would also like to see inside the trunk with the carpets removed, but that's just me.
