This 1981 Porsche 911SC Coupe is a European-market example finished in Moss Green Metallic. The car spent its early years in Europe being serviced at the famed Autohaus Max Moritz dealership in Germany where it was fitted with Turbo-style spoilers. Remaining with the same owner, this 911SC was eventually imported to the U.S. where it was registered in New York and later in Vermont. It was driven sparingly by its owner up until 2015 when it was placed in storage. The seller recently acquired the car from the owner’s estate and had it assessed and serviced by a vintage Porsche specialist. This one-owner 911SC is now being offered for auction out of Vermont.

This Coupe was factory-finished in the uncommon paint color Moss Green Metallic (20C) and came with an optional electric sunroof, front fog lights, a rear window wiper, and 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels. Other equipment includes European-market bumpers and lights, headlamp washers, a front chin spoiler, black stone guard decals, and a 911 Turbo front and rear spoiler that were installed in-period by the Max Moritz dealership. The seller notes that documentation is available for the spoiler installation showing the parts were installed following Porsche’s specifications. The car was refinished in its original color in 2008 and the seller states the original Sekurit glass remains in place. Some oxidation is noted on the trim and window frames, the passenger side marker is loose and will require a new clip, the door handle cups show missing paint, the tires need to be replaced, and some light pitting can be seen on the headlamp lenses. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this 911SC features a black interior with a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, a heater, a VDO quartz clock, and an aftermarket Alpine CD stereo. The seller indicates normal signs of age-related wear are present and the passenger-side sun visor has a slight bend at the far edge. The shifter shows significant wear and oxidation, and the rear passenger-side seat has a small gouge in the trim near the quarter window. The passenger-side door lock knob is cracked, the heater lever and handbrake lever show oxidation, and the glove box shows cracks and discoloration. The seller adds that the interior was cleaned upon their acquisition, although some mildew odor remains.

The European-spec 3.0-liter flat-six engine in this 911SC was originally rated at 204 HP and drives the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car was assessed and serviced by the Porsche specialists at Bullfrog Auto in October 2023 including draining the fuel system and changing the oil. The inspection notes show several outstanding maintenance items and are provided for reference in the gallery.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for viewing this auction for an original, one-owner, Euro 1981 Porsche 911SC. This is a project car. We accept that there is increased risk in acquiring a project compared to a running and driving example. That being said, this car is as good an opportunity as any project 911 I've had the pleasure of documenting. All the fundamentals are in place to build an excellent driver that also looks the part in an understated and less common color. I am not the vehicle owner. I represent owners, dealers, and estates, mostly through online auction sites like PCARMARKET. I specialize in Porsche cars and find tremendous value in them on many levels. This car came to me through the administrator of the estate of a deceased man. When I first viewed the car, the condition of the mechanicals was largely unknown. At the onset, I had no immediate leads on the history of the car other than a few documents. I ended up tracking down a mechanic who had worked on the car years ago at his Euro service garage. The mechanic knew the deceased owner well and had many positive things to say about the car and the owner. Later I had the car assessed at Bullfrog Auto and learned much about the condition of the drivetrain. I shot all of the photos and took the startup video. This has also helped further my connection to the car and my knowledge of its condition. What I share with you about the car is based on the collective knowledge of a few Porsche people and a limited document trail. I enjoy the opportunity to engage with enthusiastic car people and I know plenty will be reading this now. Thank you to all the participants and the kind and helpful staff at PCARMARKET.”

@RS136 Don't forget to figure in replacement of fuel lines. This will definitely need that done. Plus replacement of most of the other rubber parts on the car. I can do most or all of the work this car needs, but the number of hours required and the cost of the parts is putting this car around the breakeven for me now, and I'm sure the price will increase. Not to mention the unknown issues, like rust in harder-to-check areas, such as the corners of the glass. I do agree the color is unique and good luck to the winning bidder - this will eventually be a beautiful car.

Actually you should insure a car before you pay for it and sign papers.
Have policy start just prior to sending money.
Euro Coupe in Moss green is a winner.
I would hang that tail on the wall of garage and just have a normal deck lid.
SC cars if you checked that tail box you got a huge 930 tail and is just to big for a narrow body car as many prob feel the same. If you like tails do a carrera tail. I wish I had the time and spare money to build this car out to a concour SC coupe. It really is stunning.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@wilhit10 good advice! Use a classic / specialty insurance company.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

To the participants in this auction: does anyone have any questions or thoughts regarding the ROW/Euro motor in this car? There are some notable differences: valve size, compression and fueling among others. If you have any questions or have experience with the 930/10 motors, please contribute here.

This car was built in September of 1980, making it among the first cars to use the 204hp 3.0 930/10.

  • wilhit10 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

I'd buy it just for the color. Hopefully this car will be bought by somebody who will actually bring it back. Most project cars never get finished as most project buyers never finish their projects.
FYI, if your shipping a car, make sure you insure it before the car ships! Sometimes the shipper does not actually have insurance and you can be stuck with their mistake.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@RS136 thank you for adding your thoughts. I’m sorry to hear about your frustrating transport experience. I am happy to help the winning bidder secure reliable transport with experience moving classic p-cars. A good, careful and communicative hauler makes all the difference!

I recently sold my 1983 euro in a private sale, also in Vermont. The import process used on my car many years ago under prior ownership included changing the fuel distributor and WUR (CIS parts) to the US engine versions, and adding a CAT and Lambda controller. The CIS changes reduced engine performance significantly, as I found out once I replaced all that with factory correct parts. My experience doesn't mean this car had the same changes but that is why I asked my questions.

  • sportscarguy3 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

already close to my limit / budget I'd suggest currently with PCar fees, shipping, and guestimating $ 15 - $ 18 K in motor, tires and misc.
    Do like the color tho
Will be watching from here in Sonoma

  • zuch (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

@paddock.club I'm pretty sure I saw the standard ROW emissions equipement when I poked my head under there. No cat, but a pre-muffler and a smog pump. Given that the USA version of the car had different emissions equipement for the same model year, I would think you might need changes if your state is picky.

  • sportscarguy3 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

    @paddock.club I appreciate your prompt reply and candid comments ! : )

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

As @zuch had mentioned: the car did not start last Saturday. It turns out it had run out of fuel. Yesterday, I added fuel and it started up!

I uploaded the new cold start video as evidence. PCARMARKET should have it in the mix, soon enough. To anyone looking at transport options, this car should be able to be loaded on a trailer under it's own power. The clutch is working and the engine starts.

It's still a project car and should not be considered a driver. It is useful that you can move it around, however.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@sportscarguy3 Good questions. I don't believe the car will run and drive well. I have not driven the car and the shop that performed the independent inspection did not drive the car.
We did not perform a compression or leak down test but I would assume it's down on compression on multiple cylinders considering the piston rings are likely in poor shape.
Considering how long the car sat, I would suggest that all hydraulic systems be serviced. The brakes are a priority item on that list.

I can't speak to the condition of the suspension other than it's not leaking now. You may want to add dampers to your list of needed items, anyway.

I have little sense of what would be necessary to make a Euro Porsche CARB legal, but I've been told that a registered importer needs to verify that the car was imported and modified to meet EPA/CARB/DOT standards. Can anyone here speak to this?

Thank you for asking the California emissions questions. While I don't have the answer, I think it's worth discussing this here as some others are considering California registration.

  • sportscarguy3 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

    So, a few questions
Does the car run and drive well currently with no problems other than the cosmetics and items listed I see a lot of blue smoke at start up
Has anyone done a compression or leak down test in the last five years that you’re aware of
You mentioned the car needs tires is there anything else mechanically or suspension wise that the car needs immediately to function and be safe to drive?
Finally, I am in California northern California a difficult smog market as a 1981 I will need it will need to pass California emissions testing e.g., catalytic converter, etc.
    Thank you
    Steve

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Glacier996 I’ll take some more detailed photos of the smog equipment and look for the cat you mentioned. Please look for them first thing tomorrow morning, the latest. Thank you

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

    @mstuart1988
I’ll work on getting the sticker image and WUR numbers later today or tomorrow morning, first thing.

  • Mstuart1988 1 month, 1 weekago

Is there an import sticker on the inside of the engine lid, maybe right where the stick support in the pictures? Sometimes the sticker indicates any changes made for emissions. Also, can you see or take a picture of the Bosch part number on the warm up fuel pressure regulator (WUR)? Need the last 3 digits of the 9: like 438140089 or 045. Often the 3 digits are stamped into the part .Thanks

  • Glacier996 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Is it possible to get more detail pictures of what looks to be the smog equipment on the engine? That air pump on the left side with the belt running off the crank. Does it have a catalytic converter?

I had the pleasure of spending an hour with the car and the seller @paddock.club yesterday. The seller came across as genuine and was very helpful in showing me around the car and answering questions. The exterior of the car shows extremely well. It is mud season in Vermont and the car was dirty, but from what I could see, the repaint was done at a very high level. The door jambs were not repainted but tape lines were not noticeable and I believe the glass was pulled prior to the repaint. I found one small spot of corrosion, which can be seen at the top of picture 80, where the bottom of the quarter window trim meets the door jamb. The interior was almost as nice as the exterior. There was a slight smell of mildew (maybe 3 on a 1-10 scale with 10 being gross). There was also visible corrosion on a few of the controls (picture 101) and on the drivers side rear passenger seat belt (picture 121). I pulled the speedo (picture 198) and believe I see 38720 or 38700 written on the back. This corresponds closely with the last records from Germany which show 36407 km (picture 153). I risked life and limb and stuck my nose into the frunk carpet. I did not smell any sign of vermin, though it was covered in torn up paper. I don't currently have any signs of the plague. We tried to start the car. I turned over freely and "wanted" to start but did not. Lastly, I tried to view the undeside as best as I could. It was raining, the car was on mud, and we didn't have a lift, so it was difficult. The underside doesn't look as pretty as the interior or exterior. There were obvious signs of oil leaks, and surface corrosion on many components. Bushings were hard and will need to be replaced. It didn't look "bad", just not as nice as the rest of the car. The car has been sitting in an unheated garage for many years and it shows.

@Alvir21852 You will find the photo numbered 200 in the gallery. It was just uploaded. Thank you for asking.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Cailas I agree. It would be helpful to have additional records. I have nothing after the July 2008 record to help orient us. I reached out to Fred’s Import Specialist previous owner (shop has been closed for some time) and we discussed the Porsche and ownership. John, the last owner at Fred’s, said he may be able to dig up the records but nothing came of it.

On another note @Zuch pulled the odometer from the dash and may have found the mileage (on the odo back - in kilometers) recorded when the car was imported from Europe. It’s faint but it reads 38,720 (km) I believe. @pcarmarket will have image posted soon.

  • Alvir21852 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Can you shot a photo of the tool pouch?

  • Cailas 1 month, 1 weekago

Talking about the millage.... If you look at the service receipts, in July 2008 there was an AC repair and the odometer was recorded at 48,113. There is another (later?) receipt under that one which may show the date and millage but it cannot be seen. Comparing those two receipts (dates and millage) with the current odometer reading may help clarify the situation and get a better ides of the real millage of this car.

Vermont does not title cars older than 25 years, they issue transferrable registrations (pink slips). Oklahoma and every other US state is Federally obligated to treat a properly endorsed transferrable registration from VT and NY, AL, GA and others that don't title old cars, and treat that as THE title.

@zuch good eye on the Carfax! If you ignore the first two number the mileage difference makes sense. I believe you are reasonable in suspecting a typo. I can’t speak to the functionality of the odometer, unfortunately.

  • zuch (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Do you know anything about the mileage discrepency between today's mileage and the service record from 7/10/2008 (which is also on the CarFax)? I'm assuming "Fred" made a typo. It seems strange that the car would have been driven 2k miles in a month. Any idea if the odometer is working today?

@Sweetcaroline09 I'm sorry but I can't offer you a driving video. I enjoy making driving videos but this car is not drivable in it's current state. Please see images numbered 160 & 161 in the gallery. You will find a reasonably comprehensive report explaining the issues this car has. While the car looks complete and shows very well, the motor will need work before it runs reliably. In addition the clutch may need some work (though it's functioning to some degree) and the brakes are dragging. Other items will certainly need attention as this car sat for at least 9 years. Fuel and hydraulic systems will need special attention and extensive repair/restoration. This is typical of cars that have been sitting for an extended period of time. If you have more questions or need direction in approaching a project like this, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you

Yep!!! The damage to the Spare Tire “SCREAMS” RODENT.

BUT YET AGAIN, your honesty is forthcoming!!!

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@wilhit10 I forgot to mention: The trunk seems to be rodent smell free, as well, but I assess it more carefully Saturday morning. I think the rodent in question was not the most tenacious of his ilk.

@Jetpaul I'll take the kudos. Thank you. I hope that the winning bidder will feel that the car was accurately represented when they finally put eyes on it.

@wilhit10 It is very hard to get rodent smell out of cars. Very true! I haven't seen much in the way of rodent damage in the interior but the trunk had shreds of paper towel where a furry woodlands creature attempted a nest once upon a time. The smell in the interior is standard issue mustiness with a distinct absence of rodent smell. @zuch is meeting with me Saturday morning and can give you an unbiased and up to date opinion, assuming he's willing.

    @paddok.club

Your Honesty is to be commended!!!

    Your open mindedness is refreshing!!!

This is going to he a GREAT car for somebody who “WANTS” a project. And I expect it will sell for a HIGH price based on its potential!!!

  • wilhit10 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

How bad does this thing smell in side? Its extremely hard to get the rodent smell out cars.

@HamiltonMT It's good to have a sense of humor and an open mind when ever your embarking on a project like this one! And yes, the brakes will need attention too, based on Bullfrog's recommendation. This car sat for 9 years or more.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Jetpaul Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The clutch did free up on it's own after I started the SC at the estate! It's working well enough to move the car. Unfortunately the car did not start the next time.

I agree that a rebuild is probably the right course of action.

Your thoughts on the speedo are reasonable. Nobody can be 100% certain one way or another regarding the accuracy of the mileage. Thank you for chiming in.

@tff Glad you found the report useful. I am new to Vermont but the nice people at Rennline told me that Jason at Bullfrog is among the best nearby air-cooled mechanics and they trust his experience and honesty. I'm happy to hear you like the color. I love it more and more as I spend time around it in a range of light. Thank you.

@zuch Thank you for asking. Absolutely! Tomorrow's weather looks disagreeable but Saturday is ok. Please message me to arrange for a viewing. I look forward to meeting you and showing the car. I extend this to anyone interested in seeing the car in the metal.

@Jetpaul - and hope the brakes work. But really, this will be a great project for someone with the time, money and know how. GLWA.

    What a nice “Barn/Garage Find”!

I would have to agree with Bullfrog though, that engine desperately needs to be pulled and resealed. I suspect the rings are stuck, so the heads and jugs need to be pulled. At that point you might as well just go ahead “while you are there” and rebuild it.

The last MX stamp from Germany shows roughly 22,500 miles (converted from KM). My question is if that Speedo is original to the car, or did it have a EURO Spec KM/H unit before being imported?

As Bullfrog points out, Total Mileage is uncertain. But “IF” the Speedo was changed out during Federalization/Import then I would add the mileage mentioned above to the 40+K showing now.

As for the clutch, I would put the car in Second gear, then crank the engine. Hold the clutch on the floor and blip the throttle a few times to see if the clutch disk frees itself from the flywheel. (Obviously done with LOTS of clear space ahead of you, and nothing to hit!!)

The report on slide 160 & 161 is very helpful. Like the unique color.

Is the car available for showing? I'm in Vermont.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@bigchungus I just reached out to the attorney administering to the estate and asked that we get a duplicate title for this Porsche. I'll keep you updated and give you a sense of timeline, soon.

  • bigchungus (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@paddock.club can you elaborate? Sounds like no problem in Vermont, Oklahoma is a different story. Registration would work if importing from foreign country, but have to have a title here.

  • paddock.club (seller) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@bigchungus Yes! Great question. In this case it's a transferable registration. A common document for Vermont cars.

Being as this car is coming from an estate, is the title free and clear?
