We are pleased to offer this custom 1983 Porsche 911SC Rothmans Safari tribute.  The result of a custom restoration completed at a cost of over $100k, this final-year 911SC has been transformed into a rally car inspired by the Rothmans SC/RC Group B racers of the East African Safari Rally.  Sporting a painted Rothmans livery, this SC features a custom-built 3.0L flat-six engine, Bilstein coilovers, and rugged off-road skid plates along with a driver-oriented cockpit fitted with a roll cage and MOMO bucket seats.  It was acquired by the current owner within the last 11k miles and has since been treated to over $37k worth of service including an overhaul of the suspension, a rebuild of the transmission, and installation of a Wavetrac limited-slip differential,  Featured in several noteworthy publications and rally events, this beautifully executed Safari tribute is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

During the initial restoration under prior ownership, this 911SC was refinished in White with a custom painted Rothmans racing livery and equipped with a fiberglass rear spoiler, protective skid plates, mud flaps, and an off-road light pod on the hood.  The sunroof has also been deleted in place of a fixed roof panel.  The seller notes that the car has seen off-road use and some cosmetic imperfections are present as a result.  The seller adds that an extensive 100-hour professional detail has been recently carried out, additional images are provided in the gallery.  The 16” Fuchs wheels have been painted white and dressed in a set of BF Goodrich All-Terrain which were reportedly mounted within the last 500 miles.

The black interior has been fitted with a pair of MOMO Corse bucket seats and G-Force 5 point safety harnesses along with a bolt-in roll cage, a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, lightweight RS carpeting, and RS-style door panels.  The rear seats have been eliminated as well as the radio, air conditioning, power windows, and power door locks. A rally timer has also been added to the dashboard as well as a USB connector/voltmeter.

Power comes from an air-cooled 3.0L flat-six engine custom built by Martins Classic Cars of Huntsville, Alabama.  This engine comes fitted with 46mm PMO carburetors, special grind race cams by Dougherty Camshafts, and heads ported and polished by Ollies Engineering.  The rear wheels are driven by a 5-speed manual transmission which was rebuilt under the current ownership in November of 2020 along with the installation of a Wavetrac limited-slip differential.  Other features include a lightweight 930 clutch kit, Bremtek brakes, a TRE front-mounted oil cooler, and a lifted suspension with custom Bilstein coilovers.  The suspension has been overhauled under the current ownership and there are no outstanding maintenance items reported as of January 2021.

The car has been featured on the Type 7 and Petrolicious Instagram accounts while participating in the following events:

  • Petrolicious Offroad Rally Feb 2020
  • DWA Norcal Rally March 2020
  • R Gruppe Norcal Sierra Rally July 2020
  • DWA Rally From Home North September 2020
  • Desert Excursion in Palm Spring December 2020

This sale will include a clean title. Offering the styling and performance of an authentic SC/RS rally car, this no-expense-spared Rothmans Safari tribute presents a very special opportunity for any air-cooled Porsche enthusiast.

@porches - Now we're talking and in far more realistic territory!

For those unaware about the Keen Safari cars, they cost around 100k to build alone, not including the cost of the donor car, and that doesn't include the motor, drivetrain work, or even paint

This SCRS Tribute has the motor rebuilt to 250ish hp and body work and repaint has been done. In addition, Transmission was rebuilt in 2020 as well as complete gravel spec suspension work. And it can be had for a fraction of the Keen Safari builds!

    Thanks for the positive responses!

I must say, I'm pretty sad to see this car go. It's been such a special and unique driving experience over the last couple of years. But everything has its time. And here we are at the last 3 hours.

And if you aren't sure about how great safari 911's actually are, here's a quick 10 minute review by Matt Farah breaking down the fun behind the wheel! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWNgs0mvoew

I have the pleasure of knowing the owner and seller of this car and have ridden shotgun in it on a mountain road to go rescue another Porsche with a disconnected battery cable. They are stand up guys and know Porsches better than most. I can guarantee you this car is well sorted and is a hoot!

Thanks to everyone for the early bids, we're quite excited to see where things go from here! If anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. We're here to help!

I know the owner and have recently looked over and driven this car with the intention of buying it for my dealer inventory. Although we did not come to terms with my purchasing the car (wholesaleish) I was very impressed by all and felt he was expecting a fair price for it ultimately. Good luck with the sale!

I know the owner and had the pleasure of driving this car. I didn't get why someone would do a safari build and thought it would be terrible on the street. MAN was I wrong. What an insanely capable and fun car to drive. The owner knows these cars better than most and spends time sorting them out so they drive well. GLWS!

@Chipper Hey @chipper, great notes and questions.

The car has been a part of the current collection for just under 2 years, and has since been extensively sorted through.

It has seen 12,000 miles of all sorts of driving conditions as depicted in the driving videos and photos. In addition to that, during this time of ownership, the SCRS has received $37k worth of maintenance and rigorous upkeep to be in absolute tip top driving shape. We’ve taken it on various long distance road trips, off roading, and it has participated in several driving rallys too, never letting us down in any circumstance.

In regards to your pricing notes, you are correct that it was once listed on BaT in 2018, prior to our ownership which resulted in an RNM auction. At the time, the car was also listed simultaneously by the selling dealer at a much higher price, and thus, likely resulted in slowing down the bidding on the car.

Since then, it’s clear that the market has changed, with prices of everything going up (which I think we can all agree on), including safari built 911’s.

That being said, once we acquired the car, there were an assortment of items that needed to be addressed, all of which can be found on the invoices included in this listings photo gallery. While Trissl curated a great amount of good quality parts for the car, most of them were tacked on and needed to be either fine tuned, changed, and/or adjusted in order to come together in a more cohesive sense.

All of that has now been addressed, and the car has been tested, tried, and gone over time and time again in the last two years. At this point, its entirely turn key and ready for any adventure one can throw at it.

Hope this helps clear up the concerns!

  • Chipper (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

This was for sale for years at trissl. last on BAT in 2018 at $75k then it was on ebay a hundred times for well over $100k. When did you buy it and whats been done recently etc. Thanks

  • naveed (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Hello everyone and welcome to our auction for one of the most versatile 911’s in existence! If you’ve ever looked for a one car solution that can pretty much do anything, this is it.

This car started life as a base 1983 SC that landed at trissl spots cars needing a full restoration. Instead of taking it through the original restoration path, trissl opted to build it out into the incredibly capable car that it is today - An appropriate homage and no expense spared rothmans sc/rs tribute. 140k +build excluding the donor car.

The engine is original and numbers matching, though it was rebuilt and upgraded with hotter cams, ported/polished heads, etc, all the works, and is estimated to put out 250bhp.

The body was done by vintage auto craft in Nashville, where master mind and pebble beach/amelia island concours winning painter (Tim Marinos) started. The car was stripped, measured to be as precise as possible with the livery design, and then painted. Its in phenomenal condition still as seen in the photos, with hardly any blemishes despite being driven to its full extent.

The car has been an absolute rocket and blast to drive around, and as noted in the article, has been featured on petrolicious and type7. You can see the Petrolicious article listed below.

    https://petrolicious.com/articles/celebrating-rear-wheel-drive-rallying-and-the-early-years-of-prodrive-with-two-tributes

It has been a part of the collection for quite some time, and is likely one of the most driven and favorite cars amongst them all due to its incredible ability to overtake anything thrown at it. It can climb mild rocks, be taken in the sand and gravel, and is insanely fast even on the tarmac against other sports purpose oriented street cars. See video’s in the listing for more.

Overall, theres nearly 40k worth of maintenance and upkeep during the current ownership, and the car just recently was serviced and cleaned top to bottom, making it turn key and ready for the next owner to enjoy. It needs absolutely nothing. If you have any questions at any point, do feel free message me directly or comment here.

    Thanks, and happy bidding!
