Up for auction is this nicely presented 1983 Porsche 911 SC Targa finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior.  Featuring iconic air-cooled styling and a removable Targa top, this number’s matching 1983 example was treated to a recent full engine rebuild at a cost of over $15k.  Reported to be in excellent running order while showing approximately 54k miles on the odometer, this Targa represents an incredible opportunity for any vintage Porsche enthusiast.

The traditional Guards Red paint is said to be in good overall condition although the seller states that some panels appear to have been refinished.  A collection of detailed images is provided in the photo gallery.  Exterior highlights include a distinctive “tea tray” rear spoiler, black stone guards and a black wraparound Targa bar with rear dome glass.  This 911 rides on a set of black factory Fuchs wheels which are currently wrapped in Hankook Ventus V12 tires.

The black leather upholstered interior is noted to be in nice condition with some wear and tear on the driver’s seat.  An aftermarket head unit has been installed and a new Targa top has been fitted onto the original frame.  Features include a thicker leather wrapped steering wheel, power operated windows and an aftermarket Kenwood head unit.  All gauges, electrical components and accessories are reported to be fully functional.

This Targa retains its original air-cooled 3.0 L flat-six engine which was completely rebuilt three years ago. 180 HP is delivered to the rear wheels by way of a number’s matching 5-speed manual transmission making for an authentic driving experience.  Over $15k was spent on the engine rebuild and the car is said to have been driven approximately 100 miles since that time.  Accompanied by service records and invoices, this 911 is stated to be in excellent driving condition.

The sale of this 911 Targa will include one master key, the original tools and service records.  If you have always wanted to own a vintage air-cooled Targa, this solid 1983 example may just be the one.

@Miguel stock cams, it was in the garage for 6 months, first real start up since the fall.

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Thank you, was the AC upgraded?
Also, during that major service, do you know if they added the pop off valves and upgraded the chain tensioner?

    Thanks

  • Miguel (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

What is the reason for 1,500rpm idle as the tach is showing in the photos? Is the car running stock cams?

  • Joecangolf (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@Mrosilio Tail is original to me, not sure if its factory. AC is cold, and yes $22K on engine restoration with Werks, Dave Hammers shop in Sea Cliff

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

    Hey, Got a few questions.
    1. Is the whale tail original? Looks to be a slightly different color.
    2. Does the AC blow cold? Was it upgrade to R134?
    3. Is the 1 service record you provided the one for the engine rebuild? Looks like it's for $22k.

    Thanks

  • Joecangolf (seller) 3 years, 11 monthsago

@carsinc I wanted to do all the rubber and gaskets , on the engine, the guys at Werks convinced me it would be a good idea. In the end, it was a great idea. Runs so much better

  • carsinc (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

For what reason was the engine rebuilt? Unusual for an SC to need a rebuild at such low mileage

@Caymanorcarrera I have many photos, what would you like to see specifically? Mileage is accurate. Once I had engine restored, I purchased a 2011 911 GTS, so this car became a local driver.

  • Caymanorcarrera (registered bidder) 3 years, 11 monthsago

Nice SC. Too much tail. Should have sugar scoops. Like the shark fin stone guards. Need better pictures, but top looks to be in good shape.

100 miles in the last 3 years? Did the motor get broken in? Shouldn't there be some documents to support the 54K mi and numbers matching claims?
