Successor to the 924 front-engine sports car design, the Porsche 944 was introduced in Europe for the 1982 model year featuring improved suspension, brakes, and a new inline four-cylinder engine. This 1983 example is one of the earliest to have been sold in the United States and comes finished in black over a black partial leather interior. It equips a 5-speed manual transmission, a sunroof, a Blaupunkt stereo, and 15” Fuchs alloy wheels. Having spent time in Virginia and Maryland before making its way to Indiana, this 944 is now being offered for auction.

Finished in black, this 944 is said to have been repainted under a previous owner. Equipment includes pop-up headlights, body-color side moldings, a removable sunroof panel, a polished exhaust tip, a heated rear hatch window, and a black polyurethane rear spoiler. The 944 rides on factory 15” Fuchs alloy wheels dressed in Uniroyal tires. The seller notes some door dings and additional images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report.

The cabin is trimmed in black partial leather upholstery and includes a matching black carpet dashboard cover, power windows, a Blaupunkt stereo, black floor mats with Porsche lettering, and a driver's seat cover. The seller states that the clock, lighter, and power antenna are currently inoperable.

A naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle delivering up to 150 HP and 142 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Standard features include four-wheel independent suspension and power-assisted disc brakes. The CARFAX and a detailed list of service history are provided in the gallery and note regular oil and filter changes. Service since 2022 is said to include the installation of a new battery, a rebuilt A/C system, and an oil change.

This sale will include service records, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know:Thank you for visiting my auction.  I have owned this car for over a year.  I bought it to teach my son to drive a manual.  We have driven this car at least once a week, in town and on the Highway. I keep it stored in a conditioned garage.  The car is stock with a rebuilt AC in 2023 and new tires in 2022.”

Response to idealcheese: Per the service records the time belt was replaced on July 9, 2005 with the odometer showing 120,050 miles. Clutch is good. I drive this car weekly around town and briefly on the interstate.

Good afternoon, With regard to the question asked by AnyOldIron: The front Valene is a little offer. I did upload a photo of the front License plate holder and its out of alignment which adds to the issue. the valence appears to be pushed back on the passenger causing the alignment issue the and the flair on the passenger side is a bit more than the flair on the drivers side.

It's too bad about the dash but the interior looks to be in good condition otherwise. The black Fuchs are slick on black paint! The Blaupunkt cassette player is a nice period feature. I don't see any signs of rust, either. Do you know when the last timing belt replacement was done? I'm sure bidders would like to hear about the condition of the clutch as well.
@bldn101 Totally agree about the early dash. The shape and yellow gauges are iconic. The later oval dashes may have looked original at the time, but now they look like almost every dash seen in the 90s and 2000s.

I had a black 1985 944 and when the 85 1/2 came out w/ the "modern" elongated oval instrument cluster, these began to look dated. Flash forward and Porsche has gone back to this type cluster and the 85 1/2+s look dated!
I remember the first time I saw a 944 and I was blown away w/ the race car flares. Even though we are used to muscular fenders on even family sedans today, a lot of people have never even seen a 944 and, especially w/ the Fuchs, this car will still turn heads. Think of it as a sporty around-town econo car.

I see what your saying. I think this is an optical illusion. The front plat holder is not square and the new ac condenser is silver and stands out and is an a slight angle which creates the illusion of the front spoiler being out of alignment. Ill get a ruler on both sides from the spoiler to the bumper to show its actually level or not.

  • AnyOldIron (registered bidder) 7 months, 2 weeksago

Can you tell us whats going on in pics 9-14. The front spoiler seems to be all wonky. Gaps, pitching from Right to left. Thanks!

  • cdsmith3030 (seller) 7 months, 2 weeksago

I also just reviewed the Carfax which is in the gallery and the specific dates of transfers are in there.

  • cdsmith3030 (seller) 7 months, 2 weeksago

Good morning and thanks for the questions. In the photos section is a complete breakdown of maintenance and title transfers. The car was originally sold by Koshouty Porsche Audi LTD in Newport News VA on 4/29/1983. On 8/26/1989 in was purchase by Frank Lopato from Radley Acura in Falls Church VA with 51,361 Miles on the odometer. Sometime around 6/6/2001 it was purchase by Charles Marino with just over 100,000 miles. Around 7/9/2005 it was sold to Ross Poplar with around 120,000 miles. The car sold at the Mecum Auction in May of 2021, Then sold at the Palm Beach Barrett Jackson Auction in July 2022 to Dave Kring Chevrolet in Petoskey Mi where me and my son first looked at it. We bought it and trailered in back to Bloomington Indiana In July of 2022. We drive it weekly, Mechanically its in great shape, drips a little oil, but no other issue. We fixed the HVAC first and I had plans to sort out the electrical issues with the Lighter clock and antenna but we are moving and I am losing 2 of my 4 garages. I will remove the dash cover and upload the photos today or tomorrow. The drive side widow switches did nor work and were replaced. They work now but are brown not black. This is visible in the photos. The sunroof leaks if taken through a car wash. Tough way to find out but no issue with normal rain. Appreciate the questions. Let me know if you have any others.

  • AtLast (registered bidder) 7 months, 2 weeksago

Are you able to explain the chain of title and know how many owners there have been? There is a dash cover how badly cracked is it? What other defects are there in addition to clock, lighter, and antenna not working? Has there been a diagnosis of why those items are inoperable? Are there any other electrical or mechanical gremlins or anomolies?
