This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera is finished in Slate Blue Metallic over a Blue leather interior, and is said to have been acquired from the owner of Road & Race of Los Angeles in April of 2021. Under previous ownership, the original engine was replaced with a rebuilt 930 Turbo case that has been bored out to a 3.5-liter displacement with 100mm Mahle pistons and cylinders, mated to a close-ratio hybrid 915 gearbox with a custom gated shifter as well as 930 synchros and dogteeth. The suspension has been modified with custom-valved Bilstein strut inserts, upgraded torsion bars, thicker anti-roll bars, a 930 steering rack, Turbo tie rods, 993 brake calipers, floating rotors, 930 hubs, and rolled fenders housing custom 17” 3-piece Fuchs wheels with BBS barrels. The interior received 911 sport seats, a new RSR black carpet kit, a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR-46 radio with a 6-speaker sound system and crossovers, a Nardi Fittipaldi E3 steering wheel, and a host of Rennline accessories. Work completed under current ownership is said to include a new clutch, flywheel, and repair of some electric issues and leaks totaling around $15k. Showing just over 425k miles on the odometer with approximately 25k miles on the rebuilt engine, this 1984 Porsche 911 is now being offered at auction by its seller out of California.

The exterior is finished in Slate Blue Metallic (661) and includes U.S.-spec safety bumpers, power-operated door mirrors, H1 headlights, Euro-spec taillights, a Turbo-style front spoiler, and French yellow fog lights lenses. The car was completely refinished under previous ownership and the seller reports rock chips on the front valence, a bubble on the hood under the corner of the Porsche badge, a ring on the roof from a bike rack suction cup, a dent in the lower front valence, and missing paint on the rear windscreen trim. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This Carrera rides on a set of custom 17” Fuchs wheels with BBS barrels, measuring 9” wide in the front and 10” wide in the rear, wrapped in Toyo R888 tires from 2021.

The interior features sport seats upholstered in blue leather along with a matching dashboard and door panels. Amenities include power windows, cruise control, and a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR-46 radio with a 6-speaker sound system and crossovers. The cabin has also been fitted with a Nardi Fittipaldi E3 steering wheel, a new RSR black carpet kit, a custom gated shifter, and Rennline drilled floorboards, pedals, door handles, and lock knobs. The seller reports the original rear seats and carpeting will accompany the sale along with a roll bar that has not yet been installed.

The original engine has been replaced with a rebuilt 930 Turbo case bored out to a 3.5-liter displacement and fitted with 100mm Mahle pistons and cylinders, sodium-filled Club Sport valves, a custom Peter Dawe performance chip, ported heads, a 930 oil pump, 964 camshafts, a custom exhaust system, SSI heat exchangers, and dual external oil coolers, a custom cat-less exhaust system. A claimed output of approximately 250 HP is sent to the rear wheels by a close-ratio hybrid 915 gearbox with 930 synchros and dogteeth. The suspension received custom-valved Bilstein shock inserts in the original Boge struts, upgraded 23mm front and 28mm rear torsion bars, thicker 22mm/21mm anti-roll bars, a 930 steering rack, Turbo tie rods, 930 hubs, 993 four-piston brake calipers with floating rotors and hats, and Pagid Blue brake pads. The current owner has replaced the clutch and flywheel, corrected some electrical issues and leaks, and performed a general service at NARW of Reseda, California.

This sale will include a clean title, service documentation, and a copy of a 2008 Excellence magazine issue in which the car was featured.

  • WReiter (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Thanks for the photos! Just to be sure I have it clear, the car won't currently pass CA smog because it doesn't have a cat? (Note: This probably won't affect whether I will bid--just want to know for potential planning.)

@WReiter I took some pictures of the frunk and sent them to PCar but I guess they did not make the cut. It has a hefty strut tower bar, black carpet that snaps into place with no rust underneath it, the original jack, and a spare tire. I am out of town for work but I will take upload some pictures when I get home tomorrow afternoon.

  • WReiter (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Any chance of some photos of the boot (frunk)/battery box?

  • SCottT (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

The vehicle had a light flywheel when I purchased it but it was not very practical for driving in the city. When it was cold it would stall at red lights. I had NARW install a new flywheel. I am not sure if it is stock but I believe it is because it does not have the stalling problem that it had with the light flywheel.

  • WReiter (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Is the flywheel stock or lightweight? I ask because the article mentions that the engine does not rev as quickly as a stock 3.2. If the current flywheel is stock the new owner could switch to lightweight to help the engine build and lose revs more quickly.

This car reinforces my 84-89 advice to all 911 newbies (and 915 gearbox so go to the front of that if possible). The chassis is so durable and everything else is reasonably serviceable.

And avoid investment post 73 garage queens unless that's your thing. They cost nearly the same to own over equivalent time periods and certainly don't deliver such a great smile/mile/$ ratio. Yeah I love this car.

@Frankobra the A/c is all there and it technically “works,” but it is like a whisper. I don’t use it at all. The heat works quite well.

@SCottT But the car has been a California vehicle all of its life. You can see from the shots under the car there is no rust.

  • SCottT (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@MooseDriver17 sorry. The floor mats are glued down.

@VertexAuto yes. I took it to Griffith Park C & C in December last year. It had a roof rack on it with a red bow. Magnus was looking at the wheel setup because he could not believe it had 275s in the rear.

Edit to the description from the prior owner (who built the car as it stands): “it’s a mag case with a euro trans cooler & 5th is a 38/30 one of the tallest factory gears and has a carrera chin spoiler. Jae Lee of mirage did the set up.”

  • VertexAuto (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@SCottT Right on! Thank you for the background. I thought I recognized this car. C&CLA in Griffith Park?

  • SCottT (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@VertexAuto Indeed. I have not put most of the miles on this car. I drive a BMW e30 in autocross and track events. I drove this car to Cars & Coffee and in the canyons around Angeles Crest Hwy, but never on the track or autocross. Most of the miles were put on this car before I purchased it. The engine was replaced with a rebuilt engine bored to 3.5L at about 400k miles. Almost the entire car has been gone through. Mechanically, it is as solid as they come. And you are correct, there is enough patina to not have to worry about enjoying it.

  • VertexAuto (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@SCottT That's cool because I'm also a driver. LOL! Nice enough to properly admire but with enough patina to enjoy freely. For me, this is the sweet spot. I'm about to hit 200K miles on my Bali Blue '87 3.4. 425K miles is just awesome!

  • VertexAuto (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

LOVE IT!!!! So much more fun than stock. Nothing like a tastefully modified G body Carrera. I feel like this car has a perfect balance of originality and mods. Someone really knew what they were doing. The new owner will be thrilled!!! GLWA

Looking forward to the auction. I am selling the car to fund another Porsche purchase. If anyone is in the Los Angeles area, the car is in Pasadena and I would love to show it to you in person. It is a solid driver that won't disappoint. Feel free to ask me any questions.
