1984 Porsche 928S 5-Speed

Up for auction is this nicely appointed 1984 Porsche 928S finished in Ruby Red Metallic over a Grey Beige leather interior.  This luxurious V8-powered grand tourer was originally delivered in Massachusetts and is said to have spent time in California and the southern United States before it was recently acquired by its seller in Arizona.  Highlighting an eye-catching color combination, a desirable 5-speed manual transaxle, and a considerable amount of maintenance carried out in recent years, this 928S is now being offered for auction in excellent running order with approximately 86k miles showing on the odometer.

This 928S is presented in its factory original color of Ruby Red Metallic (L810/X7) and the paint is said to be in very nice condition overall with only minor imperfections noted along the edges of the doors, hood and lower bumpers.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX.  Paint-depth readings taken by the seller also suggest the car to have been likely refinished at some point during its life.  A later-model S4 spoiler has been added and this example rides on factory 16” flat-dish “manhole cover” wheels in a custom chrome finish.  New General G-Max tires have been installed within the last 4 years.

Inside, you will find an attractive Grey Beige leather interior that is said to remain in excellent highly original condition.  The dashboard is free of cracks, although there is some very mild warping around one of the defroster vents.  An aftermarket JVC radio has been installed along with upgraded speakers.  The sunroof is operational, however, the seller notes that it will only open about 1”. It was also noted that the cigarette lighter functions as an electrical outlet, but that the heating element itself does not work.  All other gauges and accessories are said to be functioning properly aside from the trip odometer.

This U.S.-market 928S is equipped with a fuel-injected 4.7 L V8 engine that sends 234 HP to the rear wheels through a sought after 5-speed manual transaxle.  The 928 model is notable for its impressive 50/50 weight distribution and innovative "Weissach Axle" that enables passive rear-wheel steering.  This example is reported to be in strong running order and service records dating back to 2017 show the following maintenance items to have been carried out:

  • New Clutch (Including Pressure Plate, Discs, Throw Out Bearing, Pilot Bearing, Slave Cylinder)
  • New Steering Rack
  • Trunk Latch and Motor Assembly
  • Front End Alignment
  • Exhaust Service
  • New Wheel Bearings
  • Power Steering Flush
  • New Spark Plugs, Rotor, Cap, Wires
  • New Belts
  • New Circuit Board Assembly for Gauge Cluster
  • New Tires
  • New Front Brake Pads
  • Hood Struts
  • New Battery

There is no record of a timing belt service, although the seller has offered to provide one to the next owner at an additional cost of $900.

This sale will include service records and a clean title. Beautifully configured and well-presented, this 928S offers an excellent opportunity for any transaxle Porsche enthusiast.

Hi, What is the minimum price that you are accepting for this 928s? Thanks

  • ClassicPromenade (seller) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@JBRob007 Thank you for the info, I always love learning about these cool cars!

  • JBRob007 (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@ClassicPromenade No questions, but a couple of comments for your info. I'm pretty sure the pod and dash have vinyl covers (they're not stock & hide pod / dash cracks, etc) - While those fit well and surprisingly look pretty good, prospective buyers will want to know this on the front end. The shift knob & boot is not stock (that's why it keeps pulling up when you shift) - The stock shifter cover is one piece knob & long leather boot in one - Not a big deal, as it is easily replaced. Other than that, the car presents very well, everything under the hood looks OK, and the paint color is gorgeous with only a few minor defects. While the GTS wing is not stock, it is VERY expensive and a lot of work went into that installation - very nicely done. Two thumbs up!

@ClassicPromenade , this is how I like a Porsche 928 to be represented on PcarMarket. Outstanding video. At least you know the car compared to recent offerings here! GLWTA

@JBRob007 Glad you liked the video, however I'm a bit embarrassed about my gear shifting!!! Oh man. Tomorrow I'll get you a photo of the paper sticker in the hatch compartment. What other outstanding questions can I answer for you (which were not addressed in the video)?

  • JBRob007 (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@JBRob007 Watched the video which answered the paint question and the odometer works - sorry, my bad. Very nicely done video and covered a lot especially the very minor paint defects! Thank you! BTW, it has a dog leg 1st gear - from neutral pull the stick to the left and down for 1st. You were taking off from a dead stop in 2nd, which a 928 can do all day with TONS of torque, and merged onto the highway in 3rd, 4th & 5th. Try that in 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th if you REALLY want a smile on your face :) You won't need 5th.

Overall I think the car is nice and presents very well, especially the metallic Ruby color & interior. Upon closer inspection I have a few questions: Did the car have a full or partial repaint? I ask because of the color matching GTS wing is not stock for that model year and some body work / paint is required to remove the "S" duck tail spoiler. The instrument pod has a vinyl cover. Does the dash also have a vinyl cover? Are the door cards with dual speakers stock for that model year or was it an option on this car? The option codes are listed on the paper sticker in the hatch compartment. If not, the door cards are out of a later model car (85 or later). Does the odometer work? An indicator of an inoperative Odometer is the Tripometer remains at 000,000 after being reset (odometer gear is likely toast) - hence the mileage may not be accurate.

@JNasty Your observations about the interior colors are correct. I believe the overall interior trim option was called "Gray Beige," but clearly there are 3 different shades present. We do not have a POC, but the interior and upholstery contractors we work confirmed that the leather seats and carpets are in fact original.

  • JNasty (registered bidder) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@ClassicPromenade - looks like tan/champagne seats, gray beige carpets and brown dash, no? Not all gray beige. Have a COA/build sheet?

Hi everyone, I am Daniel, the seller of this Porsche. My overall impressions of this car have been very good. If there is anything you wish to know, just ask. I will answer all questions to the best of my ability!
