As part of the second phase of the 1985 model year, the "1985.5" Porsche 944 received major updates, including a redesigned interior, improved suspension, and revised engine components. Finished in Kalahari Metallic over brown leatherette with pinstripe cloth inserts, this example also features a 5-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, front & rear stabilizer bars, protective side moldings, a sport steering wheel, cruise control, and more. Initially delivered at Auto Plaza Porsche Audi in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it was later commissioned to extensive service at a cost exceeding $17k by the Porsche specialists at Autobahn Extremist in late 2020. Showing less than 16k miles on the odometer, this well-documented 944 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Ohio.

This Porsche 944 was ordered in Kalahari Metallic with optional protective side moldings. Equipment includes pop-up headlamps, front fog lights, a black polyurethane rear spoiler, and 15” Phone Dial wheels. The car rides on Pirelli P6000 tires that were mounted in 2019 within the last 500 miles. The seller states that paint meter readings indicate the original paint remains on all body panels. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is trimmed in brown leatherette with matching brown carpets and highly desirable pinstripe cloth seat inserts. Optional features include a four-spoke sport steering wheel, cruise control, a Monterey digital cassette radio, and an alarm system. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

For the 1985.5 update, the 944’s 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine was given redesigned combustion chambers and modified cam profiles. Up to 150 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Optional performance features include a limited-slip differential and front & rear stabilizer bars. The seller states that the specialists at Autobahn Extremist performed a thorough servicing, replacing, cleaning, and detailing of all necessary components in late 2020. The specialists recently revisited the car with maintenance and an inspection carried out in Spring 2023. A host of detailed service documentation is provided in the gallery, and the seller states there are currently no outstanding maintenance items.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a car cover, and extensive documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “I’m proud and excited to offer on consignment this highly original and beautifully preserved 1985.5 Porsche 944 Coupe.

History:

The vehicle was produced at Porsche’s Neckarsulm, Stuttgart Germany Factory, and then shipped to the USA.  According to the Original Delivery Invoice, it was supplied new by Auto Plaza Porsche Audi, Pittsburgh, PA with an MSRP of $26,073 to a prominent Northern Ohio Mechanical Engineer. The owner was very meticulous and kept all the documentation associated with the vehicle from delivery forward, including a detailed log of every fuel purchase made. As the years passed, he added a new BMW E30 M3 to his collection, and his consultancy business required increased travel, so the Porsche saw less use. In the late summer of 1988, the car was stored and covered at the owner’s property in a newly constructed building with a concrete floor. There it stayed until late 2020 when the family decided to have the vehicle comprehensively recommissioned in preparation for sale. I sold the car in the summer of 2021 to the present (second) owner and am now representing it for them due to a change in family circumstances. During their short ownership, they added just 500 summer miles.

Maintenance/Recommissioning:

The original service booklet has several stamps for work completed from the car’s early life by the selling dealer. There are also several invoices for basic maintenance on the vehicle dating back to 1986. On emerging from storage in late 2020 the vehicle was delivered to Chris Moore the principal of Autobahn Extremist an independent Porsche Specialist in Northern Ohio with a long history of maintaining 944s. Chris embarked on a thorough servicing, replacing, cleaning, and detailing of the vehicle to return it to prime condition after its long slumber. Maintaining the car’s originality was always the prime directive and no stone was left unturned. The final invoice was in excess of $17k and is available for inspection. This spring the vehicle received its annual maintenance/inspection at Autobahn Extremist and is ready for its new owner to drive and show.

Condition:

As the car presents now it’s hard to over-emphasize how well it offers the perfect combination of originality with just the right amount of 35 years of minor patina, it just feels and looks right in every respect. Very importantly all of the paint meters as original at between 3-5 mil. I’ve been fortunate to have experienced and driven many Porsche 944s over the years and this car is right at the top of the list as far as I’m concerned; time capsule originality, deep provenance, and just the right number of miles that you shouldn’t be worried about adding a few more by immersing yourself in the intoxicating experience that driving this German legend provides!

@FawsittMotors- Desirable if it was going to be raced, but as a street car the 844 had one of the largest sunroof's ever!

Oh my, I just noticed the car has no sunroof! Its still a very nice example that can sit with my collection as I have a weak spot for Kalahari cars.

@Ehrenbragg Thanks for your interest, the car does not have the center mounted brake light at the top of the rear hatch.

  • Ehrenbragg (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@fawsittmotors does this car have the CHMSL, please (center high-mounted stop light to those that are uninitiated)? The law in the US started with the 1986MY but I'm not sure if Porsche did an early introduction since this car was overhauled in the middle of the '85MY.

    Thanks!

  • FawsittMotors (seller) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Thank you everyone for your interest in the car. I'll be monitoring the auction during the last few hours in case there are any additional questions.

@Cherryblock The pictures and from spring. We do get the occasional late snow fall in Ohio. The car wasn't out side in it :-). It has only been driven 500 miles since all the work was completed.

  • Sobe991 (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

@Cherryblock I'm from NE Ohio, about 20 minutes from the dealer. Unless he took the pictures and video on Wednesday last week, the pictures and video are old.

  • Cherryblock (registered bidder) 5 months, 2 weeksago

Are the pics/videos recent? I noticed the snow and it caused me to think maybe these were done sometime ago?

@needanothercar No rodent damage or odor. The interior/exterior of car has no smells.

  • needanothercar (registered bidder) 5 months, 3 weeksago

In the copy of the repair receipt, page 105, there is mention of removing rodent nesting material from the tailpipe and muffler. Was there any visible rodent damage to interior or instrument wires? Any odor from their occupancy?

  • FawsittMotors (seller) 5 months, 3 weeksago

@needanothercar Thank you! It's an amazing car!
