Born from the original R5 Turbo FIA Group 4 racing homologation car, the Renault R5 Turbo 2 features distinctive bodywork with boxed fender flares and a mid-mounted turbocharged 1,397cc inline-four paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. This 1984 example is one of 3,167 Turbo 2’s manufactured over a four-year production run and was imported new to the U.S. by Sun International. It comes finished in Rouge over a tan cloth interior and is equipped with an optional 2.5mm wastegate shim, power windows, a cassette, a folding fabric sunroof, independent double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and staggered-diameter metric alloy wheels. The car was purchased by the current owner in 2016 and subsequently treated to over $12k in service over the next four years. Showing approximately 18k kilometers or 11k miles on the odometer, this rally racing icon is now being offered for auction out of Illinois.
Adapted from the Renault 5 Alpine, the Renault 5 Turbo features revised rear bodywork designed by Marc Deschamps at Bertone under the supervision of Marcello Gandini. The car is characterized by its boxed fender flares with side air intakes, wide rocker panels, vented fiberglass hood, and roof spoiler. This example is finished Rouge (705) with contrasting “TURBO 2” side graphics. It rides on metric alloy wheels dressed in Michelin TRX tires measuring 190/55/340 in front and 220/55/365 at the rear with manufacture codes 3016 and 3116 respectively. The seller notes a folding cloth sunroof was professionally installed under prior ownership and some minor surface scratches can be seen on the paint, plastic trim pieces, and bumpers. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin features tan cloth bucket seats with matching door panels and carpets. Accessories include a leather-wrapped Iso-Delta steering wheel, power windows, analog gauges, and a Kenwood cassette stereo paired with door-mounted speakers. The seller notes some deterioration of the foam seat cushions and a loose “Unleaded Fuel Only” label in the instrument cluster.
This Renault is equipped with a fuel-injected 1,397cc inline-four engine with a Garrett turbocharger and a factory-optioned 2.5mm wastegate shim, producing approximately 185 HP. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle and stopping power comes from disc brakes at each corner. The chassis includes independent double-wishbone suspension with coil springs in the rear and torsion bars up front. Service completed between 2016 and 2020 included new gear shift linkage, a new ignition amplifier, hatch struts, a fuel sender, a fuel pump relay, distributor cap/rotor, spark plugs, a fan belt, coolant hoses, and a coolant temperature sender.
This sale will include a factory Gotti spare wheel, an original argon fire extinguisher (uncharged), a battery tender, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thanks for considering this rare, unrestored, and expertly conserved survivor. Far from being a trailer queen or museum specimen, though, its factory power was bumped to around 185 HP thanks to a larger intercooler and 2.5 mm wastegate, which makes this car extremely fun to drive far from the limit. There's no telling what driving experiences you'll discover should you decide to push the envelope. After all, this was a World Rally Championship Group B homologation special intended to allow Renault to participate in the series.”

@garrege Current owner has not opened the roof during his ownership and wants to keep it that way.
Can you show a picture/video of the roof open?
Open to comments and questions in the home stretch of this listing. I am with the car and can easily check it to clarify any and all questions you might have.
It should be pretty clear by now that this is a highly useable, highly preserved car with no needs, and stunning looks. If usability and originality is your thing, we have a car for you. The significance of the model has been discussed previously in this listing. The go-kart handling + turbo lag kick-in-the-butt driving experience makes for endless grins whenever you take it out on the road.
Thanks, and good luck!
@wanna123 Fuel gauge is accurate, engine starts great from cold and settles nicely into idle. See cold start video shot yesterday https://youtu.be/-IY4eG4lKks.
Fuel tanks and sending units function properly?
cold, start and idle circuits functions as intended?
Thanks I had twin to this minus the folding roof which is a bit of a bummer for me.

@Cavallino87: the symbolism is intriguing: we might never know what Mr. McBride meant, but thanks for introducing me to his work.
@pgoldman: Posting work orders spanning current ownership.
@Timestatement: The rev limiter was reconnected after the photo was taken. No known reason why it was disconnected. The car has been run and driven at highway speeds since being reconnected. Presumably it works, but the engine has not been revved enough to test the limiter function. Cold start video taken today, 12/2/24, showing rev limiter connected: https://youtu.be/-IY4eG4lKks
Thank y'all. Feel free to reach out (PM or here in the comments) with further questions or requests.
Why is the rev limiter disconnected ? Is there an electrical short?

Never seen one of these in person but I loved the Rick McBride "Decisions, Decisions" series of posters in high school. Had the whole set, including the R5 Turbo. Apparently you can still get them:
