First offered in 1984, the M491 “Turbo Look” package gave customers the option to add the widened body styling, suspension, and brakes of the Turbo model to a standard naturally aspirated Carrera. This 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera M491 Coupe is said to have undergone an OEM steel Slant Nose conversion along with several Turbo-specific upgrades and a rebuilt engine with a turbocharger by PowerHaus America under previous ownership. Acquired by the seller and second owner in 2006, this tastefully customized 911 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with approximately 61k miles on the odometer and accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Finished in Guards Red, this Carrera features the optional M491 Turbo Look package including wide bodywork and a distinctive tea-tray rear wing. The seller adds that the previous owner carried out an OEM steel Slant Nose conversion including flat louvered fenders with popup headlights, a 930S-style front valence with integrated fog lights, boxed rocker panels, 2" widened steel rear fenders, and rear fender air intakes. It rides on custom 3-piece Fuchs-style wheels with OEM centers and new Toyo tires. The seller notes minor signs of road wear including scrapes on the underside of the front spoiler, additional images are provided in the gallery.

The driver is situated within a black leather interior featuring a 930 S-style steering wheel, an Alpine radio, and a custom center console housing VDO temperature & vacuum gauges. Factory equipment includes heated & power-adjustable seats, automatic heating control, cruise control, central locking, an alarm system, and an electric sliding sunroof. All gauges and accessories are reported to be working properly.

Power has been upgraded with an air-cooled 3.4-liter turbocharged flat-six engine built by the specialists at PowerHaus America. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transmission. The M491 package also adds Turbo-spec brakes and suspension providing for improved cornering and stopping power. No outstanding maintenance items have been reported, and the seller adds that a host of service documentation is available for viewing in the gallery.

This sale will include a clean title, owner's manuals, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and service documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for having a look at this fantastic M491 Coupe with a 930 S conversion and a fully rebuilt motor converted to Turbo specs by PowerHaus America just 9,000 miles ago. It has everything great about an 80s Porsche!”

An image from a 1988 Alan Johnson Racing USA Catalogue showing the complete 930S body kit laid out was added for reference to the 930S equipment on 1985 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.4L M491 Factory M491 TURBO SLANT NOSE CONVERSION. Good luck to all bidders and thank you to everyone who commented.

@Stunt_Road @Stunt_Road, no problem glad to help. Those are the factory headlight linkages and headlight bezels.

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 1 weekago

Thank you @930flachbau for taking the time to view the images and offer your insightful independent opinion, very helpful to bidders. Yes, Alan Johnson Racing AKA AJ Racing USA offered Genuine Porsche 930 Parts both interior and exterior. For reference I have added Images of AJ Racing Brochures that include pricing for kits and individual parts from 1984. Expensive!

My original AJ Racing sales brochures lists San Diego, Ca. I purchased the 930S steering wheel and the console. This is a nice hotrod turbo. I like the stance also.

After observing the photos provided, this is one of the most accurate 930S clones I've ever seen. The headlight mechanism covers are factory, even the fog lamps are the correct type for the factory slants, the strakes and ducts look factory, even has the factory slantnose windshield washer container in front of the Driver's side front wheel well.
For the skeptics out there........a couple of U.S. Porsche shops were offering factory slantnose kits back in the early to mid-1980's. One of them was AJ Racing (?) out of Arizona.

Images 278-308 added to the gallery depict the genuine 930S pop up headlight system on this M491 Carrera with a lot modifications!. Porsche selected the OEM headlight system from the 944 as the basis for the 930S. It is important to note that these headlights only work with Porsche Genuine 930S fenders, as aftermarket fenders typically relied on RX7 square headlight system which are functionally and aesthetically very different. Also to note we compared this Porsche to three genuine 930S headlight systems and ancillary items and this Slant nose was in most ways as or more complete than the three high mileage examples we compared it too.

Beautiful build! I live in NorCal and would need to register the car in CA. It appears as though the car is currently registered in CA, but you indicated it could not be registered in CA in it's current configuration. Do you know what would need to changed?

This is joe fabiani president of Fabspeed Motorsport usa. The guards Red 930 slantnose featured in this auction is beautiful and well executed. In the 1980s many 930 turbos were converted to 930S cars worldwide and in the USA. It was not that difficult or complicated. Back then anyone could order the parts from Porsche and or have a talented fabricator make the parts accordingly.

I believe that anyone can still order 911 front and rear wide fender extensions in steel from Porsche too. it was normal to weld on and lead in rear quarter and front quarters to get the M941 / 930 factory wide body. The front fenders are easily fattened and vented and pop up headlights added. The hardest item to replicate are the rear fender side strakes grills. This cars look great.

I own a factory 1987 930 S “505 “ car thats just like this one including the front European 930S spoiler . If i did not already have a 930S id be a buyer bidder for this car ………as it’s cool and bad-ass. My factory 930S has simple reversible modifications just like this car……….4 speed manual …….”Der Widowmaker”!

    So I am lead to
believe some people chopped up an OEM rear quarter to extend it 2”? Bro, my family built a bunch of aftermarket metal Flachbau kits . Where is the paper work? I am calling it out now. You said OEM? What? The Light mechanism?

It’s to my understanding that Special Wishes rear quarter panels, side box rockers , front slopenose fenders were never sold to the the public as a body kit. I believe you can only purchase those parts as a repair if you own an M505 slopenose.

@prmnorton1 - The previous owner who commission the engine build is noted as wanting the power to be commensurate with is 993 Turbo so that would suggest around 400 HP. Tho boost is set conservatively at 1 bar. Power deliver is very smooth and progressive.

  • prmnorton1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Stunt_Road thank you, what type of horsepower is this car putting out as of now?

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

    @prmnorton1 - Yes, AC works.

  • prmnorton1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Stunt_Road thank you for answering the questions, does the AC work?

  • JMS935 6 months, 2 weeksago

Wow, paid for a turbo conversion with an actual 1984 930, that’s just crazy. Some people have way more dollars than sense.

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@prmnorton1 - Thanks for the questions. The original 915 transmission is in the Porsche. Books and records that accompany the car have been added to the gallery including detailed invoices for the engine build. This build was so comprehensive/costly that the previous owner gave his 1984 930 to PowerHaus America as a deposit on the build!

  • prmnorton1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Stunt_Road so is the transmission a 915? Also do we have any records with this car? Also, does the AC work? Thank you.

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Revemup1 - Leather front seating surfaces was standard. Full leather was an option. Your statements indicate you are uninitiated on these cars. Please ask questions instead of making uniformed declarations that may mislead others. Thank you.

  • Revemup1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

These cars came with leather dashes in them, is this dash a replacement?

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@prmnorton1 - The Porsche retains it's original engine and DME, however the engine was converted to turbo specs 9000 miles ago.

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Reynaldo - There is no Bondo showing through anywhere including the pics you mentioned. The work on the Porsche was done to a very high standard using all Genuine Porsche parts. The Porsche presents very nicely and does not need paint work. Video is now up.

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Autotrend - The 930S/Slant Nose conversion was done with all OEM Porsche parts. The lights are round. Pcar is uploading a video that highlights the the headlight operation..

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@Revemup1 - There is absolutely no sign of body filler/Bondo on the quarters. . The dash fits perfect in the low angle POV what you are seeing is underside has warped slightly. Not uncommon.

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago

@bugnbox - Great question. As equipped it will not pass CA smog.

  • Autotrend (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

was this conversion done with round or rectangle headlight? there are no photos with the headlights up. so i cannot tell.

  • Reynaldo (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Wondering if owner can upload videos of cold start and car running from inside the car to show transmission shifting. Also if any info on how long ago was the car painted. Notice bondo showing true paint in picture 61,63,72 and 73. Also noticed rust on pictures 65. Definitely a cool build but in my opinion is in need of a proper paint job.

  • ljpviper (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Dash might be warped, not too uncommon. What pic number shows the bondo?

  • prmnorton1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

And as far as the transmission is this a 915 or is this a G-50?

  • prmnorton1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

Hi, do we have any records on this build and is this an all matching numbers car? or is it a replacement 930 motor ? and just want to confirm that this is a 3.2 and not a 3.3, Ty

  • Revemup1 (registered bidder) 6 months, 2 weeksago

The photos appear to show lots of body filler in the rear quarters, is that a true statement? Why does the dash not fit around the instrument cluster upper facia? Whats going on there?

  • bugnbox 6 months, 2 weeksago

Will this car pass California emissions testing?

  • Stunt_Road (seller) 6 months, 2 weeksago
