Up for auction is this low mileage 1985.5 Porsche 944 Coupe finished in Black over a Black partial leather interior. Featuring factory optioned cruise control, limited slip differential and Sport Suspension package, this 5-speed late-1985 example is reported to have been sparingly driven while under the care of the original owner’s family up until 2012.  After taking ownership of this 944 in 2017, the seller performed a long list of maintenance items including the replacement of the timing belt, water pump and front engine seals. With approximately 29k miles showing on the odometer, this 1985 944 is now being offered in outstanding overall condition by its seller in Virginia.

Stated to have always been garage-kept and professionally detailed, the Black finish on this 944 is reported to be in excellent condition with paint protection film applied over the headlights, mirrors and partial front hood.  A few minor paint touch ups and some minor road-going wear have been indicated as the only imperfections (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  This 944 features a standard electric sunroof, flip-up headlights and 16" factory Fuchs wheels which were professionally restored by Harvey Weidman and are dressed in Continental all-season tires.  The original 15” factory Phone Dial wheels will also be included with the sale.

Inside, the Black partial leather interior is said to be in fantastic condition with all gauges and accessories remaining fully functional. The factory Blaupunkt Monterey radio has been restored and is accompanied by a rare stereo demonstration cassette tape  As a 1985.5 model, this 944 debuted a redesigned dashboard with larger air vents, revised switches, A/C and heating controls and 4 round central instrument gauges.  The air conditioning system has been updated to R134a and is said to maintain a full refrigerant charge.  The seller indicates that the sunroof storage pouch and rear luggage shade will be included with the sale as well.

This 944 carries a naturally aspirated 2.5 L inline 4-cylinder engine which was updated with redesigned combustion chambers and modified cam profiles for the second phase of the 1985 model year.  Approximately 150 HP is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission with a factory optioned limited slip differential.  This 944 was also factory optioned with the Sport Suspension package which adds upgraded Koni shock absorbers. The seller reports that when driving the car, one senses the like-new tightness of the car’s suspension, steering, and shifting; a testimony to the condition of the bushings, linkages, and factory Koni shocks. Shortly after the current owner’s purchase, this 944 was completely gone through and treated to the following list of service items bringing it up to top running order:

  • Replaced Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belts and Rollers
  • Water Pump Replaced
  • Replaced Engine Front Seals
  • Replaced Cam Carrier Gasket
  • New High-Pressure Fuel Lines
  • Replace Fuel Filter
  • New Plugs, Distributor Cap and Rotor
  • Coolant Reservoir Replaced
  • Drained and Refilled Transaxle

Proper routine maintenance has been performed throughout the car’s history with the most recent oil service carried out in the summer of 2020, and the seller confirms this 944 to be in exemplary running order.

The sale of this 944 will include a set of 2 keys, a clear title, the original owner’s manuals and warranty book with burgundy cover, extensive service records, the original jack and toolkit, a replacement Porsche spare tire and the original 15” Phone Dial wheels.  Offered in fantastic condition while showing under 30k miles on the odometer, this 1985.5 944 presents a very special opportunity for any vintage Porsche enthusiast.

@nfrank32 , additionally, I would certainly store the car temporarily, as described in an earlier comment, and arrange to meet the shipper when arriving to pick up the car.

I hope this info helps you.

  • Brecktex (seller) 3 years, 7 monthsago

@nfrank32 , I would not be shipping the vehicle; instead arranging and paying for shipping is the buyers responsibility. This is typical for private (non-dealer transactions). If you are a member of PCA, you can find shippers advertising in Panorama, call them, and obtain quotes for shipping from 22902. If not in PCA, you can find shippers in Hemmings or via web searches.

Good luck with the auction !

  • nfrank32 (registered bidder) 3 years, 7 monthsago

Can you ship the vehicle. Do you know the cost to Los Angeles. Thanks in advance

  • Brecktex (seller) 3 years, 7 monthsago

@CurtGT3RS , yes, that is quite feasible. I have space in my attached garage for it. If a winning bidder wants me to temporarily store the car as you've described, they'll need to ensure it is covered by their insurance. Most collector car insurers want photos of the insured cars within the cars' locked storage. If needed, I can send the buyer digital photos showing the car in my garage.

Good luck with the auction !

  • CurtGT3RS (registered bidder) 3 years, 7 monthsago

Thanks for the tire info! Im traveling for a few weeks - would you be willing to store the car until mid October, if I were to be the winning bidder?

  • Brecktex (seller) 3 years, 7 monthsago

@Brecktex Also, the tires have much tread depth, as may be seen in at least one photo.

    @Brecktex Thank you

  • Brecktex (seller) 3 years, 7 monthsago

@FLPcar , the red tow points were installed by the original owner's family so the car could be more safely tied down before being trailered from Texas to another member in the family in New York state in 2012. The second owner asked if I wanted him to remove them, and I not knowing if I would ever need to have it carried (didn't), I asked him to leave them on. The car has not been tracked.

I'm not aware of any paint/body work having been done.

To be a condition 1 car, one needs to spend extra time cleaning the engine bay and wheel wells perfectly. I can't think of anything else. I wanted to enjoy driving the car, so I never spent that much time getting it to be a 100pt concours car. If I had, I would not have driven it. In its current condition I took it to our PCA region's 2018 RPM (Richmond Porsche Meet), at which several people thought it had been through a 100% restoration. They were amazed to learn it was an original "survivor".

  • FLPcar (registered bidder) 3 years, 7 monthsago

A few of questions for the seller:
    1. Curious why the red tow hooks under the rear? Was the car used for track events?
    2. Are you aware of any paint and/or body work during its history
    3. If you were to name all open items that need addressing to make this car even more perfect what would they be?
    Thank you

Even if just looking, seeing the photos and reading about this car will be a real treat and I hope you enjoy it. For those of you seeking a near-new 944 with the later improvements plus the Harvey Weidman-restored 16" Fuchs, this auction experience should be fun and entertaining.

I'll be happy to answer questions (as timely as possible; please be patient with me), and I wish all bidders the best of luck.

    Have fun !
