One of the most legendary rally-inspired cars of the 1980s, the 1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 Type 8221 was built to help the R5 Maxi Turbo rally car qualify for WRC Group B competition that included the Stratos, Audi Sport, and Porsche 911. As a homologation model, only 200 examples were built, and it features a factory aluminum roof, turbocharged 1,432cc inline-four engine, and a unique rear-wheel drive design. This example (#133 of 200) is finished in red over a matching leather and fabric interior. It is reported to have been delivered new in Montlhéry, France on April 22, 1985, and driven around Southern France, imported to the United Kingdom in 2019, and then to Sweden on February 26, 2021. Accompanied by extensive documentation, inspected by modern-classic specialists at MOTIKON, and ratified by Olly Melliard (a United Kingdom-based R5 expert), this rare Turbo 2 Type 8221 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Sweden showing approximately 89k kilometers on the odometer.
This R5 Turbo 2 is said to have been refinished in its current shade of red in 2016. Exterior details include an aluminum roof, front and rear fog lights, boxed fender flares, large quarter panel air intakes, “Turbo 2” side graphics, and a single exhaust outlet. It rides on factory 15” wheels dressed in Michelin Radial X tires. The seller reports some minor paint impections, and additional images are provided in the gallery.
The interior is upholstered in red leather and fabric and features Bertone seats. Interior details include a black dash with “Renault 5 Turbo” passenger-side badging, black door card inserts, red carpeting, a 3-spoke steering wheel, and manual windows. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.
This R5 Turbo 2 is reported to have matching chassis (F0010133) and engine (J000188) numbers for its type. It is equipped with a turbocharged 1,432cc inline four-cylinder engine that is said to have been rebuilt by a French specialist before being shipped to the United Kingdom in 2019. Compared to the Type 8220 examples, the Type 8221 engines featured a larger displacement, a revised crankshaft, revised cylinder heads, and a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. It is said to have been thoroughly inspected by modern classic specialists at MOTIKON in Sweden and ratified by Olly Melliard, who is a United Kingdom-based R5 expert. The seller notes that all service has been documented and receipts are included in the sale.

Horsepower?
To explain further, as “good condition” might be an understatement: In December 2020 the car was purchased by current owner in the UK and sent to JPR classics, formerly known as John Price Rallying, a world class specialist in the Renault Turbo 2 with over 30 years of experience. After a thorough inspection all issues were revised, including electrical work as well as replacement of both high and low pressure fuel pumps.
The Following July (2021) the Turbocharger and fuel injection system was sent to highly regarded Renault Turbo specialist 3S Development, in France, for complete restoration. Following which the as new parts were reassembled in Sweden and the car put on dyno to verify faultless function and with factory settings for reliability. After this final revision work it has only been driven a few kilometers and therefore remains in such newly and comprehensively revised condition.

@ljpviper It is better to not buy the R5 than mess up a great fun car by hacking in a/c. I live in California which is not as bad as Florida in heat yet keep it original.
Registering a car from outside the states is quite easy, use google......

As the car is 25 years old or more, it can be legally imported to the US
California will make it almost impossible to register there however
Some States need more paperwork than others to title a car with a foreign title but it's typically easy
In terms of cost, Shipping in a container will be around $3000-$5000 with insurance, add 2.5% customs taxes on the value of the car
@mwein5 Unfortunately i don't have inspection papers in hand but the last clean inspection was 2021-04-21. It is due for a new one.

There are many companies specifying on importing collectible cars into the USA from all around the world, in todays globalised world overseas shipping is relatively easy.
The total cost will always vary depending on several factors. But i am sure that most shipping companies can give you an estimate.
Because the car is over 25 years old it can be lawfully imported into the U.S. without regard to whether it complies with all applicable FMVSS.
