Debuted as a performance version of the Mercedes-Benz 190E (W201) sedan at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 190E 2.3-16 was created as a homologation car for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) Touring Car Championship featuring a Cosworth four-cylinder engine and an aerodynamic body kit. This 1986 example comes finished in Smoke Silver Metallic and features a dog-leg 5-speed manual transmission conversion as well as Bilstein shocks, H&R lowering springs, and 16” EVO II-style wheels. This 190E is now being offered for auction out of Pennsylvania while showing approximately 97k miles on the odometer.

Compared to a standard W201 sedan, the 190E 2.3-16 features an aerodynamic body kit with flared wheel arches, side skirts, a body-colored front air dam, a rear valence, and a trunk-mounted spoiler. This example is finished in Smoke Silver Metallic and rides on OEM 16” EVO II wheels dressed in Kumho tires from 2022. The original wheels are also included with the sale and show some fading. Some parts of the car were previously refinished and noted imperfections include some areas of peeling clear coat, overspray, and paint bubbling, chips on the leading edge of the nose, some nicks in the windshield, and a crack in one headlight. Inside, the driver is greeted by a black leather interior with wood trim. Amenities include power-adjustable front sports seats, individual bolstered rear seats, a power sunroof, power windows, an electrically adjustable passenger side mirror, a central locking system, a sound system, a heated rear window, cruise control, an outside temperature indicator, and a digital stopwatch in the center console. The seller notes some cracks present on the dashboard and delamination of the wood veneers. The original radio is also inoperable as the antenna has been disconnected.

The 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine is based upon Mercedes’ M102 four-cylinder and features a Cosworth-built cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Up to 197 HP is sent to the rear wheels by way of a replacement 5-speed dog-leg manual transmission. The seller notes the pre-catalytic converters and stock self-leveling rear suspension have been removed and Bilstein shock absorbers have been installed along with H&R springs. Recent service includes all new brake pads, rotors, fluids, and filters as well as a completely rebuilt fuel system. The seller recommends replacing the left front tie rod, A/C compressor, idler pulley, and right rear barrel bushing.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, the original wheels and self-leveling suspension components, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “It's a driver, it's a head turner, and it's reliable now but still needs a few things like the A/C compressor and perhaps the idler as it's a little noisy. It has zero rust! It's very dry inside even after sitting in rain so no leaks and it sounds great. The pre-cats were removed at some point too.”
