Now available for auction is this 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera M491 Cabriolet finished in Guards Red over a Champagne Special Leather interior.  One of the few U.S.-market Cabriolets to have been configured with the rare M491 option, this “Turbo Look” Carrera is factory equipped with the widebody, front and rear spoilers, brakes, and suspension of the Turbo model.  Having been purchased by the current owner in 2015, this beautifully appointed example underwent a recent comprehensive service in 2020 as well as a leak-down and compression test.  Said to be in excellent running order, this highly collectible M491 Cabriolet is now being offered by its seller in Washington with approximately 78k miles showing on the odometer (TMU).

The classic Guards Red finish is reported by the seller to be in very good condition overall with the exception of some road-going chips along the front end (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  The factory M491 package includes the widebody, front spoiler, and Tea Tray rear decklid as seen on the Turbo model.  This example also features a black soft top with a matching boot cover, integrated front fog lights, and aftermarket 17” multi-piece wheels finished in black with polished outer lips.  The seller reports that new Nitto T555 G2 tires have been mounted within the last year.

Inside, this 911 highlights a Champagne Special Leather interior with contrasting black carpeting, upper door panel trim, and dashboard padding. Other factory features include a steering wheel with raised hub, a short-throw shifter, a central locking system, automatic heating control, power-adjustable seats, cruise control, and an alarm system.  An aftermarket Pioneer stereo has been installed and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional except for the clock and air conditioning.  The true mileage remains unknown as CARFAX shows a potential odometer rollback in 2000.

This Carrera is equipped with an air-cooled 3.2 L flat-six engine that is capable of sending 207 HP to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transmission.  As an M491 example, this 911 also features the upgraded Brembo brakes and wide suspension setup from the 930 Turbo model.  Records are available from the current ownership including a recent full service in 2020 which included a new distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, ignition wires, fluids, and filters.  A leak-down and compression test were also administered during this time and their results are provided for reference along with a corresponding invoice in the photo gallery.

This sale will include a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a toolkit, jack, air compressor, some service records, and a clean title.  This is a fantastic opportunity to secure one of the rarest and most collectible air-cooled 911s available.

Bid to about $55K gross (w-fees), and didn't sell on BaT 2-2-21. The ad, and the 55 comments , are all still available on the site.

I asked the Seller to keep BaT members apprised of where the car would next be marketed. I'm a big fan of having these cars well-represented, and giving them the most exposure possible for the benefit of all.

Thanks for asking about rust. In preparation for the sale I personally detailed every inch of the car. Including what I could get to underside and jambs. There is not one spot of rust on the car. Not one paint bubble. Anywhere.
I own a number of No. 1 show cars (that only get trailered to shows) and this paint is as good as the show cars. (Except for the stone chips) BUT I drive and have fun with this car.

Looks like a good vehicle. Appreciate the Seller’s clarification on the mileage. Would the seller plz comment on any rust affecting the car? THX

I feel compelled to address the mileage of the car because to some folks it may be an issue. Per the CARFAX around Y2K the odometer was replaced. The prior reading was about 107K. The lower reading was around 45k. The current reading is about 78K. The most logical conclusion is to add the difference between the reset mileage (78K minus 45k) to the 107k for about 140k on this 35 year old car.
This is a nice No. 2 driver. The mileage never bothered me.
Look to the mechanical reports. Chime in with your thoughts. Thanks

Greeting Bidders welcome to the show. Let me first state that this is a really nice car. I have had a blast with it but now have too many cars and no space. So the herd gets thinned.
I will do my best to fully address all questions. Nice link to the historical info. My car is on the turbo look registry which is a very thorough reference. Ping in as you feel lead. Thanks.
