This 1986 Porsche 944 comes finished in Black over a matching interior with partial leather seats. It was factory equipped with an optional limited-slip differential, Sport shock absorbers and stabilizers, 15” Fuchs forged alloy wheels and a standard “slicktop” roof in favor of the more commonly seen sunroof option. It was acquired by the seller from a local mechanic in 2018 and has been enjoyed sparingly as a weekend driver while undergoing routine maintenance and preventative service ever since. Showing approximately 176k miles on the odometer, this Porsche 944 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts.

The exterior is finished in Black (L041) and includes matching protective side moldings, distinctive pop-up headlamps, front fog lights, a rear window wiper, an opening glass hatchback, and a polyurethane rear spoiler.  Matte stone guards are applied on the lower rear quarter panels and the seller has provided detailed images of chips, dents, and scratches throughout the exterior. CARFAX also shows damage to the front end reported in 2004. This 944 rides on factory-optioned 15” Fuchs forged alloy wheels dressed in Sunmic GT-A tires. The seller adds that the headlights, fog lights, and tires were replaced in 2020, and the wheels were refinished the following year.

The black interior is optioned with matching partial leather seats and has been fitted with an aftermarket cupholder console as well as a modern Continental radio and upgraded speakers. Factory equipment includes cruise control, air-conditioning, power windows, a digital clock, and a locking glovebox. There was no sunroof equipped from the factory. Maintenance carried out in 2020 included the replacement of the odometer gear along with the driver and passenger door locking mechanisms. All gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional, although the brake pad wear indicator light is present as the corresponding sensors have been disconnected.

A naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine delivers up to 150 HP and 142 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle and a factory-optioned limited-slip differential. The car was also factory-optioned with Sport shock absorbers and stabilizer bars for improved handling. Service carried out upon the seller’s purchase in 2018 included a new clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, and muffler seal. Subsequent maintenance in 2019 included the repair of an exhaust leak as well as the replacement of the steering rack, spark plugs, distributor cap, and brake lines extending from the firewall to the rear. The radiator was also replaced more recently in 2020. The seller notes that the air intake control valve occasionally sticks, resulting in a higher idle speed after driving that eventually subsides once the car continues to move.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, maintenance records, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title. The seller states that a set of Phone Dial rims are also available as well as an additional glass rear hatch, rear axles, and the original radio and speakers.

Have also seen and ridden in this car; it presents and drives extremely well. The owner has put a lot of time, money, and care into improving and fastidiously maintaining this car during their ownership. The restored Fuchs look fantastic. Great enthusiast-spec example. GLWS

Know the seller personally and they take great care of their cars. This 944 looks fantastic in person and with all the recent maintenance, it makes for a great first Porsche, introduction to the 944 platform, or generally fun classic sports car.

If I was in the market I'd be happily bidding! GLWA and a preemptive congratulations to the highest bidder.

@automotiveartist Great question - I have no reason to think it wouldn't make it based solely on reliability, however I wouldn't necessarily recommend this unless you were planning to make some stops along the way as opposed to driving ~18 hours straight due to comfort in an older car

  • automotiveartist (registered bidder) 1 year, 8 monthsago

Hello, Do you think it would make the drive from Boston to Georgia ?

  • PinotDino (registered bidder) 1 year, 8 monthsago

@pwurk132 thanks for the reply and passing along those answers.. appreciate it!

  • pwurk132 (seller) 1 year, 8 monthsago

@PinotDino Hello, I apologized for the delayed response on your question. The belts have not been done in my ownership, but they were done by the previous owner and are in good condition. There are pics included for you to review the belts.

The oil leak is minimal, few drops on the ground as you'd expect with older cars. It does not drip to the point where adding more oil to the engine is required on a regular basis.

@alex33333 Hello, the belts were new from the previous owner in 2017, but he did not have records of this as the car was previously owned by a mechanic and he replaced them in his shop himself. There are pictures of the belts included and they are in good condition.

The rockers have been replaced, and I have uploaded before and after pictures of the progress on this.

  • alex33333 (registered bidder) 1 year, 8 monthsago

Just curious if the timing belt and balance shaft belts have been replaced since your purchase?
Also noticed on the first document it said the rockers were rotted and needed to be fixed for state inspection, wondering on the condition of those?

  • pwurk132 (seller) 1 year, 8 monthsago

@franc944 It is still running R12 and has not been converted

  • franc944 (registered bidder) 1 year, 8 monthsago

@pwurk132 do you know if the air conditioning system is still running R12 Freon or has the car been converted to the newer R134 yet refrigerant with newer style fittings and compressor oil?

  • pwurk132 (seller) 1 year, 8 monthsago

@franc944 Hello Frank, the AC system needs a recharge, but the climate control buttons all function properly

  • franc944 (registered bidder) 1 year, 8 monthsago

Does the A/C Air Conditioning work?
