Up for auction is this 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo project car. Following a small fire, this 944 Turbo was taken to Bauer Porsche in Oakland, CA. to be completely gone through and inspected. A professional diagnosis revealed that most of the damage has been relegated to within the engine bay. This 1986 example represents the perfect basis for a project car build or even a full restoration.
Detailed images illustrating the extent of the fire damage are provided in the photo gallery. This 944 rides on a desirable set of factory exterior color-matched Fuchs wheels that are wrapped in Radial tires.
This 944’s rare Burgundy partial-leather upholstered cabin is in need of restoration as seen in the photos. Noteworthy accessories include a car-phone, power-operated front seats and power mirrors.
This 944 carries a 2.5L inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine rated at approximately 220HP and 243 lb-ft of torque from the factory. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The seller suspects that the fire was a result of either improper timing or a short circuit from the positive battery lead. The technicians at Bauer Porsche have found the following items to be in need of replacement.
The seller notes that the catalytic converter, headlight motor, boost controller assembly and wastegate were replaced prior to the incident along with a routine fluid and filter change. This 944 is just waiting to be given a second chance.
The sale of this 944 Turbo will include two sets of keys and a tool roll. With the right amount of patience and determination, this 944 Turbo can be used for multiple types of projects. Do not miss out on this incredible opportunity.

I think I speak for all of us, including robmsales, that we hope to see her back again real soon. Good luck with your restoration!
Well bought. I’m guessing you were thinking an eBay style format with your snipe style. Regardless the $500 bump in bid shut down the competition. Congrats.
Sold for $1,700
Bid in the amount of $1,700
@K32may hello! The current estimate from Bauer was $7,000 (2k in parts, and 5k in work), and it is currently located in Oakland, CA
@azervigon what was the repair estimate from Bauer Porsche ? Current location of vehicle ? Thanks
@robmsales Hello and appreciate the feedback, however, we are here to provide the PCAR community with listings to satisfy all appetites weather it be a high-end collection or an interesting project such as this. The hopes are that this will be brought to its full glory and that the story can be shared with the rest of the community. Best of Luck to the seller as well as the bidders!
Well I'm just the opposite on why PCarMarket has these on the same action as a 918- 88 944tubro S 993's and other great looking Porsche's
This should have been sold to a parts dealer someplace- not on this web site
Just my two cents worth-
I should add even with the minimum premium, current bid is well under value for a relatively easy fix now that we know where to get a harness.
I post this with considerable consternation knowing it could negatively impact the sale by an owner, who by all appearances is up standing and doing all he/she can to facilitate a successful sale - much appreciated, but this factor is so significant it must be said. I knew the buyer’s premium was 5%, no problem with that, but what I didn’t know was that there was a $500 minimum premium.
@azervigon I was saying we have a 951 engine harness, and the battery tray that was asked about.. GLWS.
@joeyz_944 We'll be around to make sure the car can be picked up and secured, are you planning to get a hauler or pick it up yourself? Getting a hauler to go past the I-294 can be tricky and gets trickier the closer you get to the lake unless you're just bringing to joliet or something like that
Also! There was a red 951 in a lotus dealer in northside I was really considering but disappeared and I was wondering if you knew anything about that
@Reflexr ?
@Xcellr8 The battery tray, was surprisingly okay given the way the car was treated by previous owners and has no rust or corrosion, but the battery itself wasn't fastened to the car so it had broken the vacuum reservoir nib, but that was repaired, albeit the line to it melted
As far as the wiring harness goes, the socket that goes into the DME and KLR is intact, if you are one that would be willing to cut and re-wire every wire after the fire wall(injectors, thermometers, O2 sensor etc, only the stuff in the engine bay) then that would be a cheap but labor intensive way to repair it. I was planning on doing this with my husband but we don't live out here in oakland, we were just staying at a friends so we figured we wouldn't be able to finish it quickly/reliably enough to drive it home. The main difference between the 944 non S DME and 951 DME is the chip on board (data for ignition timing, mapping and fuel management stuff), and stuff to work with the KLR
As far as finding a complete harness, it is a bit of unobtainium, but I've been able to find some sellers in places like ebay that have most of the wire harness from a scrapped car, so while porsche does not supply the part new anymore ,(apparently they used to sell that for 2k$ when they did!), it is still able to just be found given time and luck
@azervigon @azervigon. can you help with transportation to Chicago I would like to bid thank you
@Xcellr8 we have a spare from another 86 951. Or you could build one. I’m topped out, with the drive to pick it up, won’t bid any higher. But we have parts, and a solid battery tray that could be welded in.
Seller, please describe the rust to the battery tray and area below the tray.
What are the thoughts about the availability of the wiring harness?
If anyone has any questions or would like specific pictures I'll be around to answer

Well this is different for PCAR. I never understood why more Porsche projects didn’t show up here. Glad to see it. GLWS.
