The E23, BMW's original 7-Series executive sedan, was manufactured from 1977 to 1986, with the last units reaching the U.S. market as 1987 models. Derived from the E23 735i, the L7 represented a uniquely tailored luxury variant for the U.S., incorporating extended leather upholstery, power-operated and heated front seats, and a sunroof as standard. This final-year example comes finished in black over grey upholstery and features an optional limited-slip differential. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee.

The bodywork of the E23 was developed under BMW’s Design Director Paul Bracq with styling contributions from Manfred Rennen. This L7 is said to have been refinished in black, contrasted with chrome trim outlining the windows, front grille, side moldings, and lower rockers. Other exterior details include quad halogen headlamps, fog lights, and twin exhaust tips. It rides on factory 390mm aluminum alloy 19-spoke wheels dressed in Michelin TRX metric tires. The seller notes this example was refinished due to clear coat failure and areas of patching. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Representing the most luxurious model of the E23 7-series, this L7 features grey leather upholstery covering the seats, door pillars, door panels, and dashboard with hand-stitched armrests and a center console. The power-operated front seats offer a memory function, heating elements, and power-adjustable headrests. The rear seats have a fold-down center armrest, individual headrests, and a rear window sunshade. Other interior amenities include climate control, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with driver’s side airbag, a two-position electric glass moonroof, an AM/FM cassette stereo, power-adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, and a heated driver’s door lock. The seller notes the factory car phone is inoperable, the plastic dashboard cover requires replacement, and areas along the top of the dashboard near the glass are lifting.

Power is derived from a 3.5-liter SOHC inline-six engine with Bosch Motronic fuel injection and Digital Motor Electronics. As much as 182 HP and 214 lb.-ft of torque are sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission and an optional limited-slip differential. The transmission allowed for three separate driving modes selected by a knob on the center console including Economy, Sport, and manual selection of first, second, and third gears. The L7 utilizes power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an independent front suspension with double pivot struts, independent semi-trailing arm rear suspension, and hydraulic speed-sensitive power-assisted steering. Service items are said to include the fuel pump replaced, the gas tank refurbished, and some lines & hoses replaced. Some service documentation is said to accompany the sale.

This sale will include a clean title and some documentation.

The seller would like you to know: “Nice car that is rare in this design. It runs smoothly for its age. Looks like a small limo.”

@bcv1 the invoice explains what was done. I have been driving the car for months without issue. If you would like to inspect you can.

@porsche911x1 Page 1 of 2 is shown for the German Performance Options but not page 2 of 2? You just told @Dbeste that the needed suspension work was not done. Was everything else on this Invoice done? Or does all of this work still need to be completed in order to have a safe and well driving car?

  • porsche911xl (seller) 3 months, 1 weekago

@Dbeste the suspension was not changed. Although it could be upgraded I was told it was fine to drive. They had more concern for the tires which I replaced all 4 tires.

Was the suspension replaced after the shop’s safety concerns?

@porsche911x1 Thank you for the correction that certainly makes sense. Can you please add pictures of the door jambs, under sider of the doors and underneath the car. Are all of the VIN tags present? Thank You!

  • porsche911xl (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@bcv1 you are reading that wrong, they don’t paint cars outside, that has to do with warranty if that happened. The paint looks great. It was just done. You can always inspect it.

  • bcv1 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@porsche911xl What is the condition of the paint? The repair order lists hood, trunk and all flat surfaces - is there a tape line where they split the paint? It says "all painting done outside" is there contamination in the paint that would be avoided in a down draft booth? How does the paint look in person and up close? Thank you in advance for your thoughtful reply.

@porsche911xl Thank you. These are great cars and as many know, the HVAC systems on these are really their only Achilles heel. Any additional info you can provide about this system will be well received by any potential bidder or buyer. Best of luck with the auction!

  • porsche911xl (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@cocoabone With the A/C connector plugged in there is a rattle from the A/C pump, the defroster works inside the car and climate control buttons seem to work, A/C does not blow out cold or with much pressure

  • cocoabone 3 months, 2 weeksago

Pretty car! Can you please comment extensively on the functionality of the HVAC system? Does the heat work well? Does the AC work well. Do the dash controls for the climate control function properly? Thanks in advance!

@Jetpaul Hello. Thanks for your question.
The date codes on two of the tires is 2222 and the other two is 3222. These tires were difficult to find. But I was able to get them from Lucas at a pretty price. I tired to keep it true to the original tires and the wheels required the metric tires.

Unfortunately I dont have the results in printed form. But the results were normal at the time. I just tried to obtain the results from exhaust company and they did not store them.

  • porsche911xl (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@peterten Hello, I took a pic that I uploaded. It seems mostly complete, there is a space on the right side for something not sure what that is or if it is actually missing.

  • Jetpaul (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

What are the date codes on the tires (Metric TRX 🤮)??

Also what were the results of the Compression Test recently noted on the repair order?

  • peterten (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Are there tools in the tool tray and if so is it complete?

  • porsche911xl (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago
