Now available for auction is this 1988 Mercedes-Benz W460 280GE finished in Arctic White over a grey interior with Tartan cloth inserts. Mercedes’ original Geländewagen, the W460 G-Class was assembled almost entirely by hand in Graz, Austria, and features triple-locking differentials along with rugged body-on-frame construction that established the G-Class as one of the most capable 4x4s of all time. Equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, this rare short-wheelbase 280GE was imported to the U.S. from Italy in 2013 and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Pennsylvania.

This 280GE is finished in Arctic White (DB-147) with black rubberized trim. Some exterior features include a rear-mounted full-size spare with a Mercedes-branded vinyl cover, a black grille and headlight surround, black fender flares, steel front and rear bumpers, a front skid plate, and an aftermarket CB radio antenna mounted to the rear bumper.  Some cosmetic imperfections and signs of road-going wear are noted throughout the exterior, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This G-Class rides on modern W463 G500 wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain A/T tires dated from 2013.

The cabin is trimmed in grey and black upholstery with matching Tartan cloth inserts on the seats and door panels. Amenities include heat-insulated glass, a rear defroster, power windows, a Midland CB radio, and an aftermarket JVC head unit with Bluetooth capability. The factory-equipped Becker Grand Prix Electronic radio will also accompany the sale.  Metric instrumentation includes a 180-KPH speedometer, a 100x/per minute 7k-RPM tachometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary dials for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. Some wear is noted on the driver seat including a tear in the upholstery at the lower bolster. The 5-digit odometer currently shows just under 11k kilometers and the true mileage of the car remains unknown.

The 280GE is powered by an M110.994 2.7L inline-six which was factory rated at 156 HP and 167 lb.-ft of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission sends power to all four wheels through a full-time all-wheel-drive system with high and low ranges. Electronic locking differentials are also equipped at the front, rear, and center of the drivetrain. This W460 has recently passed a Pennsylvania state inspection and received an oil service in preparation for the sale. The seller reports 14/32” remaining on the front brake pads and 7/32” in the rear.

This sale will include a clean Pennsylvania title and the original radio. A rare sight on U.S. roads, this 5-speed European-market 280GE offers a great opportunity to own a collectible vintage 4x4.

That’s a pretty slick video passing over the phone with slow motion on

I have the same model 2 years older and with a diesel. Not an autobahn cruiser, but a lot of fun to drive. Very tough and over engineered as expected. A different driving experience from a long hood Porsche, or 356, but still great. Someone will enjoy.

@Mrosilio Yes, lights and gauges work

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@SkyMotorCars Sorry - I thought it was in regards to the parts for the fuel gauge.
So all gauges, lights, switches, etc are operating as they should and all engine work was completed?

  • SkyMotorCars (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@Mrosilio The most recent service invoice is from Tommy's Automotive which includes a PA state inspection, wheel brake cylinder, an oil service and wiper blades. Those items are what were needed to be addressed to pass PA state safety inspection requirements. It runs and drives great! As you can tell a lot of work was done at Mercedes in the posted invoices including spark plugs, fuel pump, sending unit, along with camshaft housing gasket valve cover gaskets etc. The only item that I see that the part was not available was the insulation under the hood. Hope this answers your question.

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Some of the records state "Part no longer available" or "No work performed".
It's kind of hard to tell if everything has been addressed. Are there any issues that have still not been addressed or is the car fully sorted?

    Thanks

@mdkillen It is a gas truck. The true miles is unknown as it shows 10,898km (5-digit odometer)

  • mdkillen (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Is the mileage actual and I didn’t see the gas or diesel answer.

@Mrosilio I will be uploading some service records early this afternoon.

  • Mrosilio (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Any service records from the last 9 years the car has been in the states?
Was the car sitting in storage from 2013 to 2020?
Was the mechanic able to advise on how much life is left on the clutch?

    Thanks

  • BarryJWilliamsSr. (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago
