This 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe was sold new by Carlsen Porsche in Redwood City, California, and was acquired by its second owner in 1989 who kept it for the next 44 years. During that time, the owner entrusted Craig Watkins, well known for his tenure as Chief Engineer for Flying Lizard Racing, to build his dream Porsche. A naturally aspirated 3.6-liter twin-plug engine was sourced and sent to FAT Performance for a custom build including bespoke high compression pistons cams, heads, SSI heat exchangers, MoTeC engine management, and individual throttle bodies. The car also received custom-valved Bilstein shocks, 17” BBS E88 magnesium three-piece wheels, an AP Racing dual brake master cylinder, a close-ratio 915 gearbox, a Quaife limited-slip differential, a roll cage, and more. Purchased by its third owner in March 2023, this no-expense-spared 930 hot rod is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

This 911 Turbo came factory-finished in Cherry Red (Cherryrot, 80F) and has been modified to an aftermarket 930SE-style front valence integrated fog lights. Other equipment includes headlamp washers, black rear stone guard decals, a Tea Tray rear spoiler, an electric sunroof, and aftermarket 17” BBS E88 magnesium three-piece wheels. The car rides on new Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires measuring 235/45 in front and 275/40 at the rear. The seller indicates the front spoiler and left fender were refinished due to a scratch and the car’s paint remains in very good overall condition apart from some minor stone chips and scratches around the driver’s door handle. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The originally Linen leather interior has been customized with black carpeting and matching black leather Sport Seats along with a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, a leather MOMO shift knob, and an integrated roll cage. Other accessories include power windows, a central locking system, a fire extinguisher, and an aftermarket Blaupunkt Honolulu CD50 stereo. The seller notes a small cut is present in the headliner above the roll bar.

Beginning with a twin-plug 3.6-liter flat-six, the naturally aspirated engine was custom-built by FAT Performance using custom high-compression pistons, camshafts, and heads, along with SSI heat exchangers, MoTeC 48 engine management, and TWM individual throttle bodies. The seller notes the car is tuned to run on 91-octane pump gas. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a custom-built 5-speed 915 manual transaxle with close-ratio gears and a Quaife limited-slip differential. The suspension has been expertly tuned and modified with custom valved Bilstein shocks and upgraded torsion bars, sway bars, spring plates, and adjustable drop links. The braking system also features an AP Racing dual-circuit master cylinder with adjustable brake bias. The seller adds that the car was recently dyno-tuned at a cost of approximately $3k and a corresponding readout is available.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, the original window sticker, a spare tire, an air pump, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This Porsche 930 was sold new by Carlsen Porsche.  In 1989 the Porsche was sold to its second owner who held the 930 for 44 years until March of 2023 when was sold to the third owner.  Always a California car.  The second owner employed Sonoma California Porsche racing legend Craig Watkins to build his dream Porsche. Craig Watkins is well known for his tenure as Chief Engineer for Flying Lizards Racing with drivers such as Johannes van Overbeek, Patrick Long, Jörg Bermeister, Timo Bernhard, and other factory Porsche drivers.  Craig Watkins is considered one of the top Porsche race engineers in the world and he executed the vision on this very special 930 Hot Rod.  A 3.6 Liter Twin Plug naturally aspirated motor was sourced and sent to FAT Performance in Southern California where it was rebuilt with the street/track build in mind with bespoke high compression pistons cams, heads, SSI Heat Exchangers and Motec 48 Engine management and TWM ITBs: a set up well established by FAT Performance.  The Porsche was recently dyno-tuned to run on 91-pump gas and is very civilized on the street.   With the seriously upgraded engine, an AP Racing 930 dual brake master cylinder system with adjustable brake bias and upgraded pads were added.  Craig set up the suspension with Watkins Engineering custom valved Bilstein shocks, matched to upgraded torsion bars and adjustable spring plates. Uprated sway bars with adjustable drop links and BBS 3 piece 17" wheels were the finishing touches along with Craig's ride height and alignment.  A full cage was added with a removable rear crossbar.  A 915 5-speed was sourced and built to street/track specs with uprated components including a close ration gear set and Quaife LSD.  Under current ownership, the front section of the cage was removed. I know people will ask where the original 930 motor is. The 930 motor was sent to ANDIAL (Porsche Motorsports North America) and was built to 962 Specs where it was installed in another of the owner’s Porsches also under Craig's care,  a 962 (Chassis no. HM-008)!  The 930 was tracked on two occasions until the 962 was ready and from this time onward the 962 saw all the track duty. As a result, the 930 covered very few miles during its very long-term ownership."

I received so many DM's asking if we still have the original 930 motor. The motor has had a great history residing in the then owners other Porsche: a very special 962. Details here for those who are curious:

@Evantage - Thank you for the great questions! The Dyno report was performed on California 91 pump gas, if you want to up the fuel quality there is another 30-40 HP to be gained moving power further up the rpm range. The current motor was built from a 3.6 and built by the legendary Ron Flemming of FAT Performance in Los Angeles. Regarding the original 930 motor I am copying from the "The Seller would like you to know" section from above. "I know people will ask where the original 930 motor is. The 930 motor was sent to ANDIAL (Porsche Motorsports North America) and was built to 962 Specs where it was installed in another of the owner’s Porsches also under Craig's (Watkins) care: a 962 (Chassis no. HM-008)! The 930 was tracked on two occasions until the 962 was ready and from this time onward the 962 saw all the track duty. As a result, the 930 covered very few miles during its very long-term ownership."

  • EVantage (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

The Dyno report looks good for a naturally aspirated 911. Is the original turbo engine included with the car or was the modified engine based on the original block?

So this 930 is no longer a 930?
