Featuring the rare M491 Turbo-look package, this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet came factory-equipped with the wide bodywork, spoilers, and suspension of the contemporary 930 Turbo model. It is finished in Silver Metallic over a Crimson Red interior and includes a desirable 5-speed G50 manual gearbox introduced for the 1987 model year. The car was purchased by the previous owner in 1993 and subsequently underwent an engine rebuild along with a ProtoSport Stage 2 turbo kit featuring a Garrett turbocharger, a full-width intercooler, stainless-steel headers, and a TiAL wastegate. It was also modified with 993 Turbo “Big Red” Brembo front brakes, 17” multi-piece wheels, a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, custom aluminum pedals, a short shift kit, a boost pressure gauge, a Kenwood stereo, and a RennAire A/C system. Acquired by the current owner in 2019, this turbocharged M491 Carrera Cabriolet is now being offered for auction out of Idaho.
Designated by factory option code M491, the Turbo-look package includes the wide fenders, bumpers, front chin spoiler, and “Tea Tray” rear decklid spoiler of the 930 model. This Carrera Cabriolet is finished in Silver Metallic with a replacement black convertible top, black rear stone guard decals, red 993 Turbo front brake calipers, and aftermarket 17” multi-piece wheels. Other equipment includes headlamp washers, integrated front fog lights, dual exhaust tips, a rear Turbo badge, a black tonneau cover, U.S. rear market bumperettes, and a periscope-style third brake light. The seller states one of the front fenders was refinished to address a door ding in 1998, resulting in the damage reported on CARFAX that year. The Continental ExtremeContact tires show production date codes from 2013. Additional images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is appointed with Crimson Red Special Leather upholstery and black carpeting. The car was factory-equipped with optional full-power seats, automatic heating control, air conditioning, a central locking system, power windows, cruise control, and a sound system. It has been modified with a three-spoke black leather MOMO steering wheel, a short shift kit, custom machined aluminum pedal covers, an aftermarket Kenwood stereo, an upgraded RennAire A/C system, an aftermarket tachometer, and a turbo boost gauge mounted below the center dashboard. The original speedometer/odometer was replaced with a 220-mph version during the turbocharger kit installation in 1993 and the current mileage is inaccurate.
The air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine was originally fitted with a ProtoSport turbo kit in 1993 and was upgraded to Stage 2 specifications in 2003 including a Garrett turbocharger, a full-width intercooler, and a TiAL wastegate. An upgraded clutch and replacement flywheel were also installed at that time. The engine features stainless-steel headers with heater boxes and a dual-exit exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed G50 manual gearbox. An engine rebuild was completed by ProtoSport in 2010 and the alternator was replaced by the previous owner. Under the seller’s ownership, service included an oil and filter change, a new fuel sender unit, and wheel balancing.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, the original window sticker, a toolkit, a spare tire, a battery charger, a tonneau cover, the original steering wheel, mirror covers, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thanks for checking out my 1987 turbocharged 911/ M491. The car is a joy to drive, sounds great with the aftermarket turbocharger, and pulls like a beast. During the past five years of my ownership, it has always been stored in a climate-controlled garage and has never been driven in inclement weather. All electric seat controls and the power top work flawlessly.”

@eurocol I’m guessing the original speedometer was swapped out to reflect the potential higher speeds after the turbo had been installed. I do know that the turbo boost gauge was originally installed where the clock is now, and was subsequently moved under the dash.
I’ll see if my buddy can do another ‘ride-along’, this time out on the highway. In the second part of the posted driving video my friend captured a bit of that pull when he was forced back in his seat as I was shifting from 1st to 2nd at minute 4:56. Sorry to all for the fingers framing the camera view :)
Nice car,
love the color combo,
170,000- miles?
Why was the speedo swapped out if it was NOT replaced with a gauge with turbo boost on it?
The driving video is very tame and hardly shows off the car's supposed "pulls like a beast" 485BHP.
Any chance you could take a real video of the car's potential?
Accelerating on non traffic infested road and the FWY?
I would love to see what it is capable of.
Many thanks, and GLWTS
@RCain The 107K on the odometer is not accurate. Based on the previous owners estimate, the car has closer to 170K. I do not have the original speedometer/odometer.
Is the 107k mileage accurate? You mention a changed odometer that does not reflect accurate mileage? Do you have the original odometer?
@MaikoR Picture #109 shows the specs for the Stage 2 conversion; listed as 485hp. I see my yellow highlight didn’t show up very well in the picture, so thanks for the question!
