Up for auction is this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet finished in Guards Red over a Champagne Special Leather interior.  For the 1987 model year, the 911 Carrera was updated with a new 5-speed G50 manual gearbox as well as revised tuning for increased power on U.S. models. This example was delivered to its first owner in Florida with optional equipment including 16” Fuchs wheels, Sports Shock Absorbers, and front and rear spoilers.  It had been part of the prior owner’s collection for over 17 years when it was acquired by the seller in June of 2021.  Showing just over 99k miles on the odometer, this Carrera Cabriolet has been thoroughly serviced and is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Georgia.

This 911 comes finished in traditional Guards Red (L80K) with a manual black soft top, black stone guards over the rear fenders, and optional spoilers front and rear.  The seller describes minor paint chips around the driver-side headlight along with signs of wear on the hood and rear fenders, additional images are provided in the gallery.  The CARFAX report shows rear-end damage to have occurred in 1991, and there is no further information provided.  The factory 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels comes dressed in a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires dated from 2013.

The cabin is trimmed in Champagne Special Leather (PE) with optional velour carpeting for the luggage compartment. Wear is noted on the seating surfaces and the seller reports the clock and aftermarket CD player are currently inoperable.  The factory specifications label on the underside of the hood lists the following equipment codes:

  • 018 – Steering Wheel with Elevated Hub
  • 158 – Cassette-Radio
  • 286 – Intensified Windscreen Washer
  • 288 – Headlamp Washers
  • 341 – Central Locking System
  • 395 – 16” Fuchs Forged Alloy Wheels
  • 439 – Electric Soft Top
  • 454 – Cruise Control
  • 473 – Front and Rear Spoiler
  • 474 – Sports Shock Absorbers
  • 533 – Alarm
  • 975 – Luggage Compartment Velour Carpet

The air-cooled 3.2 L flat-six engine produces as much as 217 HP and drives the rear wheels through a desirable G50 5-speed manual transmission.  Optional Sports Shock Absorbers were equipped from the factory and a major service was recently completed including a full inspection, new spark plugs, fuel filter, oil change, brake fluid flush, transmission fluid change, new blower motor assembly, and wheel bearings front and rear.  The seller estimates the clutch to be approximately 70% worn.

This sale will include a spare tire, air compressor, and a clean title. Sporting some of the most characteristic styling of the era along with a sought-after G50 transmission, this 1987 Cabriolet makes an excellent choice for any enthusiast in search of an air-cooled Porsche.

@britco4 … it is not a “have to”… in the owners manual it says you need to clean the window before folding… but in my experience with unzipping the results are better… its a 30 second unzipping operation…. i have had my Car since 1992….you will definitely like the top down experiences in this car as you get the symphonic engine sound …

@Domrom I have a question for my education and somewhat related to the auction. You mentioned unzipping the rear plastic window. Is this a "have to" or "best practices" to give additional life to the window by not having to fold?

@britco4 .. I own the same car an 88 G50 and have it since it was almost new… the manual top was the standard… electric was an option. The manual top is definitely more reliable than the electric as even in the electric you still have to manually unzip the back plastic glass. These were absolute 1st generation cabriolet for 911’s.

  • Gmartel603 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@Kidrod Good morning. Unfortunately there is no cover for the top when it is down. There is the typical seepage underneath the car and detailed photos will be uploaded by the website this morning. I sent them this weekend. I have had the car inspected by two shops and they say nothing is out of the ordinary and that the car is in great overall and a clean example. Thank you.

  • Gmartel603 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@britco4 good morning. This car was always a manual top. Unfortunately there is no cover for the convertible top. I am having the folks on the website upload photos of under the car this morning. I’m hopeful the photos will answer all of your questions regarding condition under the car. Thank you.

  • Kidrod (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Hi, does the convertible top have a cover when it is down?
And are there any oil leaks under the engine, drips, etc.?
    Thanks,

A few questions: (1) on the operation of the top, you state as "manual", but can clarify if it was originally elec driven? and if there are attached or loose parts to put the elec operation back in service (2) Is there a cover boot for the top when down? (3) can you provide a few underside photos? (4) have any locations of rust or corrosion been identified in the body? (5) other than the rear end repair, has there been a repaint of any other areas. Thanks and Best Wishes with the Auction.

@Bruce914 Thank you, Bruce. I bought this car for my birthday last year and am selling because it’s my daily driver and I have a 3rd child on the way so it’s really not practical given my growing family. It was a childhood dream to own this generation 911 and I was finally able to do it. I love the car but have to go in a different direction. Unfortunately I do not know the details surrounding the rear end noted on the Carfax. I’m assuming it can’t be that bad because there have been no drivability issues since it happened back in the early 90s. Thank you.

  • Bruce914 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Beautiful car. Curious why you are selling after 8 months? Any idea how bad the rear ender was? Thank you.

    Thank you.
