Sold new from the Bill Yates Porsche dealership in California, this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa comes finished in Black over a Champagne Special leather interior and marks the first year of the desirable 5-speed G50 manual gearbox. It remained with its original owner in Monterey California before moving to Chicago with its second owner and eventually returning to the West Coast upon the seller’s purchase in 2020. Some tasteful upgrades and modifications have been fitted and the car benefits from an extensively documented maintenance history. Showing just over 132k miles on the odometer, this Carrera Targa is now being offered for auction out of Oregon.

This Carrera comes finished in Black with a matching Targa band and removable roof panel. A Turbo-style front chin spoiler has been added and the 16” Fuchs forged alloy wheels received a custom chrome finish. The car rides on a set of Dunlop Direzza tires from 2009 and an additional set of multipiece BBS wheels with newer tires is said to accompany the sale. Some small rock chips are noted on the front end as well as a blemish on the windshield cowl and thinning paint near the front hood air duct. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black and Champagne Beige Special Leather interior was factory equipped with optional power-operated seats and has been adorned with a wooden 917-style shift knob and custom Coco floor mats. Factory equipment includes a central locking system, cruise control, and an elevated steering wheel hub. Aftermarket speakers have been installed and paired with a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 radio. Some wear is noted on the carpeting near the driver’s dead pedal as well as the driver’s left seat bolster. All gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional apart from the rear window wiper which was removed under prior ownership.

As much as 217 HP is sent to the rear wheels from an air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine paired with a 5-speed G50 manual gearbox. The car has been lowered to European-spec ride height and fitted with upgraded Bilstein dampers along with larger 22mm/29mm torsion bars. An upgraded Optima battery has also been installed. Extensive maintenance documentation is said to accompany the sale dating back to the original purchase with notable items including a new clutch and top-end engine rebuild at 104k miles, a new alternator at 118k miles, and a new windshield installed at 125k miles.

This sale will include a clean title as well as the original window sticker, toolkit, spare tire, air pump, car cover, and a battery charger.

@Jotte Hehehe. Here's one you can have in the midwest in about two days :)

But is it true, we have a lot of good Porsches in the PNW because we don't have a lot of scorching sun and we don't salt the roads.

  • Jotte (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Why do all the best Porsches have to be from the west coast? We need more in the Midwest!

@Jaycooke Thanks for your question regarding shipping.

I can facilitate storing the car and transferring it to a shipper, as we do that a lot at Rothsport. However, I don't have any shipper that I can get a quote from in the next hour. I would suggest you contact Reliable Carriers and ask them for a quote from 97140 zip code.

There was a request for additional pictures of the inside of the trunk to confirm that it is undamaged. I have taken them and uploaded them to the gallery. They can be seen at the bottom.

If anyone else wants any last minute pictures, now is a good time to ask for them.

@Herbtheduck @Herbtheduck jeez, oddly I don’t. It is a totally stock 3.2 and I guess I didn’t take any zoomed shots of that. I apologize.

I am at work at Rothsport right now. I plan to go home for lunch and watch the end of the auction. The car is at my home and I will be happy to take more pictures and post them about 11:45 am , so about an hour before the auction ends. Is there anything in particular you want to see?

I have posted pictures of the additional wheels and tires that go with the car. They are BBS RS three piece wheels in 7&8 x 16". The tires are Continental Extreme Contact and are dated 2019 and 2020. They were purchased in 2020 and have about 1000-1200 miles on them.

The wheels are in good condition. The centers are bright and the inner rim halves are gold colored. The polished outer rim halves show some corrosion, typical of BBS wheels. A little hand work would bring them back to a nice shine. They are straight and true.

They are standard five lug wheels, for those unfamiliar with this style of wheel. The big center "nut" is a part of a decorative hubcap made to look like a 1960's era center lock racing wheel. These tires can be moved to the Fuchs wheels based on the new owners preference.

@mnebel Yes, I performed a leakdown test about a year ago. All cylinders were less than 4% leak. The car has only been driven about 800 miles since and I didn't see the need to do it again.

  • CVA77 (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@dscottj914 Thanks for the interest and good questions.

As for the reason for selling, I am not the owner. I am, and have been, a Porsche tech at Rothsport Racing for 25 years. This car belongs to a friend and client. He is a retired gentlemen with a nice stable of cars. He bought this car to keep at his vacation home in the Napa area which he has since sold. He is simply downsizing the number of cars that he has to look after at this stage of his life.

The car has no leaks or problems. It is a very good car that has been well cared for throughout its life. I helped him to source the car when he bought it and am helping him sell it as a favor as he has other interests that occupy his time. I have personally done the maintenance on the car since he bought it a few years ago and will attest that it is one of the nicest original 911 Targas that I have seen during my time at Rothsport. I would not hesitate to get in the car and drive anywhere at all. It is ready to go.

It has its minor little chips and scuffs here and there, commensurate with a well maintained original paint job. Most only show under bright fluorescent light.
It needs nothing to be driven and enjoyed. A very detailed owner might choose to repair the driver's seat bolster but it really looks much worse in pictures than it does to the eye. It isn't that noticeable unless you are looking for it.

I don't have any pictures of the second set of BBS RS. However, they are stored at Rothsport and I will run over there today and get pictures to post up here. They are in beautiful condition. 7" and 8" x 16". And the tires were new in 2019. They have about 2000 miles on them.

  • mnebel (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Have you done a leak down test?

  • dscottj914 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Hi @cva77, you’re car looks and sounds great! Why are you selling? Are there any oil leaks/consumption? Do you mind uploading a picture of the additional rims/tires? If I’m the high bidder, is there anything it needs before making a drive to the Seattle area?

@kgishere Thanks for the questions. The A/C is in good working condition. The records show that it has been charged up every five years or so. There are receipts showing some of the hoses having been replaced.

The top is in beautiful condition. As are all of the body seals. Most have been replaced, according to the records. Does it leak? Probably :) Most targas do leak a bit. This car doesn't get driven in the rain; I don't think it would leak in the rain but a powerful blast of the hose when washing will get a few drops in at the window corners. That is pretty normal in my experience. (I have been a Porsche tech for 25 years)

The mods are all listed in the description but I am happy to go over them again. The shocks have been replaced with Bilstein units, the torsion bars have been uprated to 22 and 29 mm. It has been lowered to ROW ride height, corner balanced and aligned. It has a 917 replica shift knob, an upgraded stereo head unit and Coco mats. Other than that it is stock, including the exhaust.

  • kgishere (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Oh, and of course I forgot to ask about A/C, my bad. Is it working? I'm in SoCal, and summers can be brutal from time to time, lol

  • kgishere (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Beautiful. How's the top condition? Doesn't leak? Any mods besides lowering? Looks like exhaust?
    Thank you!

    Hello viewers,
I am the seller of this 87 911 Targa. I will do my best to check for comments and answer any questions a few times per day. Please excuse the poor sound quality in the driving video. I assure you all that the rattling you hear is my camera mount and not the car. This 911 is very tight and smooth.
