Up for auction is this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa finished in Guards Red.  In addition to its iconic Targa styling, this 911 is equipped with a desirable G50 5-speed manual transmission first introduced during the 1987 model year.  Used as a research and development vehicle for M&K exhaust, this particular example has been carefully maintained and equipped with a vacuum-actuated M&K active exhaust system.  With some noteworthy service items carried out in recent years, this G50 Targa is now being offered by its seller in Alabama while showing approximately 112k miles on the odometer.

This 911 is believed to have been previously refinished in its factory color of Guards Red.  The finish is reported to be in very good overall condition except for a few minor chips and dings (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  This 911 features a large wraparound glass rear window, a black Targa bar, and a removable roof panel.  16” Porsche 993 wheels have been installed with new tires and a set of freshly refinished 15” Fuchs wheels are also included in the sale.

The black interior is said to have been kept in great shape with only typical signs of wear present including some seam separation on the driver’s seat cushion.  The original radio remains in the car and the seller confirms all gages and accessories to be in good working order. The functionality of the air conditioning system has not been verified.

An air-cooled 3.2 L flat-six engine generates 217 HP which is sent to the rear wheels by way of a refined G50 5-speed manual transmission.  The car has been lowered to European ride height and an M&K active exhaust system has been installed which features vacuum-actuated valves that allow for different exhaust volumes.  The original catalytic converter is included along with a spare solid-state Motoric relay.  A major service was performed in 2015 which included a valve adjustment, new brake master cylinder, and all-new exhaust hardware.  Another oil change was carried out recently within the last 500 miles and this 911 is said to drive beautifully.

This sale will include 1 master key, owners’ manuals, extra Fuchs wheels, the catalytic converter, some service records, and a clean title.  With an upgraded exhaust system and G50 transmission, this Targa is sure to please any air-cooled driving enthusiast.

Personally, I would have been in higher with a bit more information on the engine health and driving videos.

I believe the only video I made with this car was for the active exhaust system. Cold start is same as in the video, this car starts exactly the same way warm or cold, after sitting two weeks or the next day. It cranks over a few revolutions fires and runs at a touch over 1000rpm when cold then settles down to a bit less than 1000rpm as it warms. Like clockwork, no drama. There is a new solid state relay in the glove box which switches the fuel pump on earlier resulting in an even quicker start if desired. I encouraged my wife to drive this car and couldn't do that unless it was 100% no drama like a modern car. Her first car was a Honda CRX which she said didn't shift as firmly as this one, I remember that car and she is right the G50 shifts with authority.
I'm putting a call into my mechanic to see if he saved those leak down and compression numbers in his log book.

Hi can you add a cold start and driving video. Leak down and compression test will help this car to sell well. Thanks

There are two small door dings on the driver's door that are difficult to see unless the lighting is just right. I will attempt to take a picture of this area. The hood and front bumper have a few very tiny superficial rock chips that I can also try to get a picture of.
I'm not seeing any sign of the front rubber trim not fitting properly, it mates flush with both turn signal lights. Which side looks off, driver's or passenger's? There is no indication that this car has ever been in an accident or even a minor scrape. I've been all over it inside and out, the inner body and underneath are incredibly clean. This Carrera appears to have been a pampered good weather fun car it's entire life. Carfax also indicates no issues.
A leak down and compression test was performed when I first bought the car as well as a full PPI so I could fix anything found. Engine is very healthy and passed all tests. I have the paperwork but the invoice didn't include the numbers. I do have all the paperwork from my ownership. The car was purchased from an estate sale through a friend of mine who knew I was looking for a Carrera. The owner had passed and no records were included with the sale. The car had been in storage so everything was gone over before I started using it.

Hi: please note on some pictures the ends of the black front bumper rubber where it meets the lights do not match and fit properly. Any front accidents or issues?

Can you please post additional pictures of body and paint where there are chips and dings. Are there any service records? Any oil leaks? Can you propose compression and leak down rest?
    Thank you

    Thank you!
The Targa top is in excellent condition with no signs of wear and surprisingly few signs of age. The seals on the Targa bar are in similar good shape. It is my opinion that this top was not removed often given the condition.
The driver's seat does have the seam separating near the back. It was my intention to have this repaired but after adding a seat cover I never got around to it. The bolster is scuffed up but not actually damaged.
The Active Exhaust System was installed for long-term testing as that was the purpose for this Carrera. The OE cat is included and I can swap it back in if desired. Yes this is a performance part that also allows for a sport sound when the engine is under load. Increase was right at 18whp with no other changes. More info and a video can be seen here:

The OE heat exchangers and muffler are retained with this system in place.

    Good looking g50!
What kind of shape is the targa top in?
I can see the seam separation in the drivers seat but harder to tell about the bolsters. Are those cracks/tears or just worn leather?
Did the exhaust changes and removal of cat make a noticeable change in exhaust note? A video would be helpful.
Also with the exhaust, did this increase hp?
    Thanks so much!

Being a Targa I never used the A/C but I did have it checked by my mechanic when the car was purchased. A/C is functional but does need a charge. I assume it has not been converted to R-134. We performed a few A/C upgrades for customers when I ran the restoration shop, I was impressed by how well these systems worked when upgraded.

As we live Central TX we need a functional Air Conditioner. Can you advise if it’s been recently charged and cools as marginally as they did originally?
Alison, was system converted to R-134?

Many thanks for your reply. Keep safe and healthy ?
    Best,
    Al

    Welcome!
The '87 Targa listed has been a joy to own and will be great car for the next enthusiast to enjoy as well. It was purchased a few years back as an M&K performance exhaust development test bed for the G-body Carrera engine. It quickly became my favorite as it was so nice, using it for a lot of PCA events and cars&coffee type gatherings. Recently an early 911 became available that is needed for a similar purpose, to develop performance exhaust systems for early 911's that have later model engine transplants. I can't keep them all and we have an SC that can pull double duty now so it was decided to put the Carrera up for sale. I'm glad to answer any questions best I can. Thank you!
